Jennifer | 212 comments never read sylvia plath, but as to your first question: Thirteen Reasons Why by Jay Asher. it's emotional and haunting.

Michael (book_nerd1991) That is a hard question, I read many books. If I had to choose it would be "South of Broad" by Pat conroy, the story was so captivating, it made you respect your childhood, despite how painful it may have been.

In a world where literature is turning digital and we may eventually even have images and news appear directly on our eyeballs via special contact lens....

I found these books to be extremely thought-provoking -
The Book by M Clifford
Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury

For creepy post-apocalyptic thoughts try -
The Sheep Look Up
On the Beach
The Road

Judy (judygreeneyes) | 411 comments All of Ayn Rand's books stuck with me and made me think (are still making me think). Some examples of other authors who really make me think:
Ray Bradbury (for example Dandelion Wine
Robert J. Sawyer (for example Calculating God)
Barbara Kingsolver (Small Wonder)
Ann Patchett (for example, State of Wonder)
Bill Bryson ( for example A Walk in the Woods: Rediscovering America on the Appalachian Trail)
Jonathan Safran Foer (Everything is Illuminated
T.C Boyle (When the Killing's Done

Colby (colbz) Paper Towns by John Green It's Kind of a Funny Story by Ned Vizzini Impulse (Impulse, #1) by Ellen Hopkins To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee

Yeah, these all made me think.
As a result of that and their awesomeness, these are four of my favorite books EVER.

Alan (coachmt) | 9 comments Flowers for Algernon by Daniel Keyes is an oldie, but one that really grabbed me when I read it in high school. It's not long but very powerful.

message 9: by Anne (new)

Anne | 3 comments My Name is Joe will make you re-think our so-called connectedness in this digital world we live in and make you think about what's really important in life.

message 10: by Kim Marie (new)

Kim Marie | 262 comments I would second the recommendation of A Fine Balance and perhaps you might try Life of Pi and The Book Thief.

message 11: by Tara (new)

Tara (booksexyreview) | 28 comments I recently finished Umberto Eco's The Prague Cemetery - and it's as easy to read as it is thought-provoking. The subject matter is dark. But what I found so amazing about it is that while it's fiction, the majority of the events are absolutely true. It's a bit like a real life Da Vinci Code (and much better written).

message 12: by Ben (new)

Ben These books really made me think. The Michael Vey series by Richard Paul Evans and Bonhoeffer: pastor, martyr, prophet, spy by Eric Metaxas.

MissJessie | 1286 comments Another vote here for 13 Reasons. Very thought-provoking; it remained in my mind for several days.

Also http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/98... *Prep} by Curtis Sittenfeld gave me a lot of "thinking" time and made me realize that the life of adolescents today is beyond belief different from anything I can relate to. Also, somewhat depressing. Very interesting though.

Learner (ghyuiknh) Night by Elie wiesel

I loved The Bell Jar and highly recommend it if you want to read something by Sylvia Plath.

These are all fiction books that left me thinking long after I finished them:

Kindred
Animal Farm
1984
Oryx and Crake
The Color Purple
Asylum
Never Let Me Go
Brave New World

These are some non-fiction books:

Welcome, Silence
Thinking In Pictures, Expanded Edition: My Life With Autism
Schindler's List

message 17: by Robin (new)

Robin Lamont | 20 comments Barbara Kingsolver took me to places around the world that opened my eyes - especially in The Poisonwood Bible. Similarly Chris Cleave's Little Bee was an emotional journey in Nigeria.

In the suspense genre author:John le Carré|1411964]writes such complex spy novels that you must absolutely pay attention. But they are brilliant in character and detail. I've enjoyed them all.

message 18: by Sara (new)

Sara C (defectivepopcicle) | 4 comments Anthem by Ayn Rand. It's a bit strange and hard to get used to, but by the end I was in love with all the ideas. Less on the political side of it and more towards the psychological ideologies.

message 19: by Eileen (new)

Eileen (eileen345) | 9 comments We the Living by Ayn Rand or To Kill a Mockingbird are two books I would suggest.
