Ravenskya (ravenskya) I just finished this one, and I can't really say that I enjoyed it. Oh I thought the story was interesting, and I can tolerate the romanticized, not-exactly-truthful take on history and the native americans. I just found the language to be tedious, wordy, and overbearing. It wasn't that it was a hard read... it was just a tiring read. To be honest with you, I can't believe that my Grandpa read it and loved it back when he was 12... I can't imagine a 12 year old in this era making it through the book much less enjoying it.

Christina Stind | 180 comments I remember reading it when I was a kid - and loving it.
But times has changed ... (saying that and feeling rather old right now!!)
I'm curious as to what I will think of it when I get around to reading it again!

Kristi (kristilarson) | 263 comments I read it a few years ago, and I had a difficult time with the language, too. But after awhile I got used to language and just enjoyed the story. I thought it was a great story. It is interesting the Daniel Day Lewis movie version is completely different from the novel, a totally different story. I would like to try another of the series (am I remembering that correctly, that there are 3 or 4 other books?), but I guess I will have to be the mood for something difficult.

Linda Cooper does get wordy and loves lengthy descriptions, so that takes some patience and getting used to. There are 5 books total that make up the Leatherstocking saga. I have read LOTM, the Deerslayer and the Pathfinder, and found the Pathfinder the least enjoyable. The last two books are the Pioneers and The Prairie. (Cooper wrote a few other novels as well.) I really like the Hawkeye/Natty Bumppo character.

I didn't like the movie with Daniel Day Lewis because it totally changed the story and the ending. I guess the movie would be okay if you didn't know how the book goes.
