this is from iles' website... i wonder if his accident will impact the release?
Dear Readers,
In response to a flood of letters asking when Unwritten Laws will be published, I want to make a unique announcement. After working two years on this book, I have produced a manuscript three times the length of a Greg Iles novel and four times the length of a standard thriller. My publisher and I have looked at this situation from every possible angle, and we have decided to split this huge story into two books, both of which will stand alone, but which are also inextricably tied together. The only alternative was to cut more than half the manuscript and toss it into the trash, and even that would have left a novel almost too thick to fit into sales racks. More importantly, since this novel—the story of Penn Cage and his father Tom facing the most dangerous crisis of their lives—contains some of the best storytelling I’ve ever done, I was very reluctant to take that route. The two novels are tentatively titled: Unwritten Laws: The Bone Tree, and Unwritten Laws: The Trial of Tom Cage. The plan is to publish them only six months apart, so as to minimize the wait readers will have before reading the second volume. I can’t tell you how excited I am that my publisher has decided to support me in this unique venture. Multi-volume works are standard the fantasy genre, but are very rare in mainstream publishing. Nevertheless, we subscribe to the philosophy that if a book is good, it can’t be long enough, and if it’s bad, fifty pages is too long. For this reason, we will not be dumping half of Penn’s and Tom’s story into the shredder. Also, I know from your emails that Penn Cage has been the favorite character I’ve created (for most readers, anyway) along with the setting of Natchez, my hometown. So, with this two-volume epic, prepare to immerse yourself in Penn’s world from quite some time. The only question I can’t answer is exactly when The Bone Tree will be published. It could be as late as December 2011, but I’m hoping I will finish my edit soon enough to speed up that date. I thank everyone for your patience and support, and I promise you, it will be rewarded.
