ahh how amazing would it be to marry a man who could create amazing books!? haha of course..i'm dating the opposite..a guy who hates books and doesn't understand my obsession for reading..oh well..at least he supports me when i tell him all excitedly about a new book or books i bought! :)

message 6: by Kelsey (new)

Kelsey Baguinat (kelseybaguinat) I know exactly how that is. My boyfriend doesn't hate books, but he never reads. He's a really slow reader, so he thinks that taking on a book is a huge commitment that he just doesn't want to deal with. But I do dream of the day when he magically starts to love reading as much as I do. Haha. Never going to happen. But it would be amazing to have someone who totally gets the book obsession thing.

yeah..that's the same with my bf..he reads slow and hes says he just can't comprehend it...i think his attention span is off and it needs to interest him..he sure can understand the sports section or ESPN magazine! :)

however..i recently bought him the David Beckham autobiography..he's been reading it some...haha..it was so funny the one day..he was like..i'm on page 50 of my book! and i was like Awesome! (you know..being the supportive reading gf that i am haha) and he was like "yeah..i read it all during class!" in my mind I was like ohhh boy..that's all he needs now..not to pay attention in class. haha oh well..i pick my battles..and i'd rather him like books! haha

message 10: by Katerina (new)

Katerina | 252 comments i think after listening to this i'm going to have to read this book.

message 11: by kate (new)

kate (katelucia) My bf doesn't read nearly as much as I do. He reads a lot slower than I do, but I takes in EVERYTHING. When we actually end up reading the same book, he'll bring up something word for word and I'll have to think a few moments before have a vague concept of what he's talking about...

haha.

Mostly we're just interested in different things. He reads a lot of historical non-fiction stuff (he's a history major.) and I'm more into the human literary element. (english lit major.)

I love that we can just sit on the couch together and cuddle while we're reading. Even when we're reading totally different things. =)!

Kelsey Baguinat (kelseybaguinat) Aww, that would be my dream to cuddle and read with my boyfriend! Haha. Aww that's really cute.

message 14: by kate (new)

kate (katelucia) thanks guys! I love it.

message 15: by Caiti Casey (new)

Caiti Casey Spiess (mrssteven) That makes me sad that your boys won't cuddle while reading with you. Me and my boy are geeks, we would cuddle and read Harry Potter. We did that again with Twilight.

message 16: by Allison (new)

Allison i read the book before i had listened to foer read the first chapter, and it really made the reading experience so much better.
i loved hearing his thoughts behind what he had written, and loved being able to 'follow along' with the book.

message 17: by Lynnie (new)

Lynnie I feel like I'm going back in time by posting on this. haha.

In creative writing we each have to pick an author and give a little report about them to the class. It's less of a report about the author and more of us just reading pieces aloud to the class and explaining why we like the style. So I chose JSF and read from both Everything is Illuminated (the first couple pages which are hysterical!) and EL&IC. I read the first few pages and the class was literally laughing out loud. Especially when I read the part about "training my anus to talk when I fart"

so yay! I have spread the gospel of JSF! haha.

message 21: by Jessica (new)

Jessica (_jes) So, I am basically even more in love with Jonathan Safran Foer after hearing him speak last night at the Jewish Community Center in San Francisco.

He talked about his newest book, Eating Animals, which I've started reading but have yet to really dig into. That being the case, I can't really give a review or opinion about this particular book, but I absolutely loved his two previous novels. I think his latest book will be really interesting because it's non-fiction, so I'm pretty excited to see how he approaches the topics of vegetarianism, factory farms, and the choices we make about food. Interestingly, he said that it's unlikely that he will write non-fiction again because his true passion is for writing novels. In any event, I really look forward to any work he does in the future.

If you have a chance to hear him speak, I highly recommend it. He's a very eloquent speaker with intelligent, thought-provoking things to say, and it doesn't hurt one bit that he's also witty. If you've read his books, you know his type of humor. :)

He graciously signed my copies of Eating Animals and Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close (!!!), but I'm sorry to say that I froze up and didn't say much to him! I wish I would've thought of something thoughtful or clever, but hopefully he comes back to San Francisco so I can try again, haha.
