Over in the Questions and Suggestions thread, I asked if anyone wanted to work thier way though the classic collections. There has been some positive interst. This thread is for us to figure out how to do this.

There are general collections - such as Jane Yolen or Surlalune's and then there are the classics such as Grimm. Do we open this reading to all types or just the classics? A new collection every one-three months depending on length?

Sue | 39 comments Prefer to leave it open to collections of all types.

Krista (findyourshimmy) | 16 comments I'm not familiar with the other collections. I, however, like the idea of keeping it open. Exploring is always good.

Cheryl (cherylllr) Keep it open. And I'm concerned about availability. There are so many anthologies that libraries can only keep a few of them in stock. I'm not sure how to work with that. Maybe have a fresh discussion every month, so that if, say, I can't get January's book maybe I can get February's. Or maybe discuss more than one book at a time, so long as they're closely related. I really don't have any good ideas, just concerns, sorry.

Bee (morgaine620) I am from Germany so I know a lot Grimms and other German or Danish fairy tales. Would be interested to stay with the classics from other countries to widen my horizon but if it stays open I do not mind. Would be also interesting to read the Grimm's in translation.

I think availbilty will depend on the collection and the edition. For instance, various translations of Grimm and Anderson are widely availble on the internet as are Lang's books. I see more of a problem if we use something that is not in public arena, like Yolen's excellent collection. So Cheryl, I share your concerns. But there is also length. Perrault's short, but Grimms might take some people awhile.

Ela I am absolutely for the idea of reading the classics. I have downloaded Andersen, Grimms, Perrault, d'Aulnoy and others for quite some time now and I would love to discuss it. btw most of the classics are available for free on the internet (on gutenberg for example).

I would love to read Jane Yolen and other collections like this, but availability is a huge problem here (for us who are from the outside of USA). Many books are available on the internet when you search hard enough but I don't expect I will be lucky with these :(.

So it seems we can split classic reads into two groups. Easy to Access, and Difficult.

So the real classics will be easy to access. These would include Grimm, Andersen, Jacobs, Moe, Perrault.

The modern collections will be more difficult. I wonder if that includes the work of Jack Zipes and the Norton Criticial editions? Does anyone know?

Katy (kathy_h) | 882 comments Actually I like the idea of spending a few months (rather than just one) on a classic collection. If it is really difficult to find at least we have other books in the group we can join in discussions. Some of the longer collections will take a bit of time -- perhaps we might overlap just a bit so that everyone has a chance to participate in some.

Ela I support Kathy's idea. After all - classics stay the same and we'll be also returning to them when reading the retellings.
We can also compare different versions of one story in classics discussion.

I like the idea of taking more than one month - and the idea of overlapping. I also like the idea of comparing different versions of one story. Maybe we could do both?

Alberta Ross (authorshow4506833alberta_ross) | 9 comments I think more than 1 month would be good some of the classics take a bit of reading - also here in UK not sure can get all those mentioned so easily
