Mad Scientist (madscientist) | 1119 comments That's a start. Oh I really enjoyed the books. I may have to try audio fir a ReRead of that bad boy!

message 3: by Lori (new)

Lori Goldstein Which book do you plan to "re-read"? Is it something on my list or ????

message 4: by Mad Scientist (new)

Mad Scientist (madscientist) | 1119 comments Da Vinci Code... :) sorry, I shoul of clarified!

message 5: by Lori (new)

Lori Goldstein That's alright, just didn't know which "bad boy" you were referring to. And I'd recommend doing audio on Lost Symbol as well.

message 6: by Mad Scientist (new)

Mad Scientist (madscientist) | 1119 comments I have not read that one, lost symbol. I enjoyed the one after the di Vinci code... Can't think of the name right now. But can't stand the movie for it.

How was the Ben Franklin book? Long, did you learn anything? Tidbits that stuck with you?

message 7: by Lori (new)

Lori Goldstein The Ben Franklin book I definitely don't think I could have made it through the hardback version. It's been awhile since I "read" that but I do remember them mentioning the number of mistresses he had, plus an illegitimate son I believe he didn't acknowledge till the end of his life. Also I think he might have started a system for FREE book lending, our good old public library system.

What part of the country do you live?

message 8: by Mad Scientist (last edited Dec 23, 2011 01:10AM) (new)

Mad Scientist (madscientist) | 1119 comments I live in Wisconsin right now. 20 minutes from the Packers Stadium. However, soon (Feb) I'll be calling Guilin, Guangxi, China home.

And you?

message 9: by Lori (new)

Lori Goldstein I live in Northridge, CA which is about 20 minutes North of Hollywood, CA (Tinseltown). Plus I'm a native Californian which is fairly unusual these days as far as adults are concerned.

When you move to China is that temporary and what will you be doing?

message 10: by Mad Scientist (new)

Mad Scientist (madscientist) | 1119 comments I was just close by there. I had stop at UCLA to talk to a few professors.

It will be semi perm. I will be teaching English this semester. Coming home for late summer/early fall & then head back for another year of teaching. After that I will have to decide to stay or come back to finish one my degrees. I have a apartment there and in Thailand.

message 11: by Lori (new)

Lori Goldstein Well too bad we didn't "chat" sooner. Maybe next time we can get together for Starbucks or ???

Anyway, you adventure sounds rather interesting. Will you still be involved here while in China? Also where is Guilin in relation to Hong Kong? BTW, why an apartment there plus Thailand. You mentioned two degrees what subjects are they in.

Thanx for answering all my questions because I enjoy getting to know people who are as nice as you. Would you like to possibly become Facebook friends?

message 12: by Mad Scientist (last edited Dec 23, 2011 06:33PM) (new)

Mad Scientist (madscientist) | 1119 comments Coffee is always good!

Adventure is my middle name. Raised army/navy brat. Sitting still is not in my blood. I find something new to do all of the time. Make rockets, work for the smithsoian, drive cross country to Cali on a whim. I decided to go and packed up. Within hours I was driving.

I should be able to be on GR. I'm getting a secure VPN address for my iPhone. We will have to see if it works. Hong kong... 10 hour train ride north. I've lived in Thailand as well. I have a life lease on a place in my "hometown". Then of course my place in Guilin. I'll be there soon enough. It will be home for the next year an half to two year min. Best way to learn a language. Jump right in. Just another under my belt I guess.

Degree in Biological & physical sciences w High honors. Working in multiple others. History & religious studies among them.

Mad Scientist (madscientist) | 1119 comments Wow! That is a lot of listening!

message 16: by Lori (new)

Lori Goldstein Well I used to have at least a 30 minute commute to work and would just listen plus when running errands. Normally I didn't read more than one book at a time in the past but since discovering audio it's helped me do that and now with my KOBO I can read 3 at a time if I wanted to.

Happy Holidays.

Mad Scientist (madscientist) | 1119 comments Have you tried the Atlantis Rising audiobooks?? Same reader from Shipbreaker.

message 20: by Lori (new)

Lori Goldstein I usually get audiobooks from the library. What are this company you're referring to? Also, is Shipbreaker a book and by whom?

message 21: by Mad Scientist (new)

Mad Scientist (madscientist) | 1119 comments Ah, I just started getting them from audible.com ship breaker is a YA dystopian. I like the guys voice and I think he does a good job making it different for each character.

message 22: by Lori (new)

Lori Goldstein Thanx for the suggestion, but right now if I can get the book from my local library I prefer that method. Guess when you're over seas something like audible.com works better.

How's the weather in your neck of the woods? We'll be in the mid to moderate 70's through New Year's at least. Fall has returned to Southern CA, hooray!!!!

message 23: by Mad Scientist (new)

Mad Scientist (madscientist) | 1119 comments That is why I'm trying it out now. I wanted to check it out before hand. So far I'm liking it. Although the two credits a month will not be enough for me while over there. But two is better then none!

For being in Wisconsin... there is no snow which is very weird. Yesterday felt like spring. This global warming is just odd. and makes me sad :(

message 24: by Lori (new)

Lori Goldstein It definitely has been a wierd weather year in Southern CA as well. Our summer was one of the coolest on record.

Sorry you didn't have a white Christmas. Our evenings have been in the mid to low 40's which isn't fun for us.

Hope you get lucky at Bingo.

message 25: by Mad Scientist (new)

Mad Scientist (madscientist) | 1119 comments I really hope so too! I need some bucks to pay for my plane ticket. Yeah, I'm a bit behind. LOL!

message 26: by Melissa (new)

Melissa T (melissasmidnightmusings) Lori, did Betty White read the version of her book you listened to?

message 27: by Lori (new)

Lori Goldstein I listened to "You Ask Me: And of Course You Won't - Betty White and it was read by her. This made the listening fun because I felt as if she was talking to me.

Have her latest "Betty & Friends: My Life at the Zoo" from the library. Most likely will start after Jan. 1 so can be included with the 12 x 12 for 2012 challenge.

Will be starting an audio about Walt Disney that's only 2 discs long. And curious how much of his life, etc. they can discuss in such a short amount of recording. Will let you know.

Awesome I'm glad it was her reading and not someone else, it would have taken away from the joy of the book, I think.

Mad Scientist (madscientist) | 1119 comments I think Neil Gaiman reads some of his books as well. It's fun to see how the author brings the characters out how they wrote them w emotion in their voice.
