I'm going to tackle the books and graphic novels that have been sitting on my nightstand bookcase (the bookcase next to my bed) the longest. Plus, I plan to read at least one book from every Booktopia author, which will end up being more than 12.

Can't wait to hear what you all plan!

message 2: by Amy (new)

Amy | 463 comments I am planning to tackle my 12 oldest TBR and my 12 oldest on my proverbial nightstand (there is very little overlap so this works well!). I will read 1 each month.

I am going to read (at least)12 new releases for 2012, shooting for one released in each month. I decided on this one because I realized I really did not read very many 2011 releases when I was trying to vote on the Goodreads poll for best books of 2011.

This isn't a "12" goal, but I managed to read every book (that I could find in print) by the 2011 retreat authors, and I intend to attempt the same for 2012 Booktopia.

I am not going to shoot for +12, because I have already read 12 past my 2011 +11 goal.

message 3: by Julie (new)

Julie M (woolyjooly) | 314 comments I am going to make a list and read at least 9 or 10 of the books that have long(est) been on my TBR list. Then I'll have "room" for another 2-3 books that I'm tempted or inspired to read. A fragile plan, maybe, for some impulsive reading delights that are sure to pop up. That's my challenge for 2012.

message 4: by Robin (new)

Robin Robertson (mcrobus) | 254 comments 12 titles on my be read list
12 books recommended by BOTNS
12 Classics

message 5: by Onaona (new)

Onaona (vaashti) | 17 comments My 2012 goal is to read 40 books (5 more than 2011). To this end, I am challenging myself to read 12 authors that I feel I should have already read (based purely on personal conviction). Authors include Jonathon Franzen, Salman Rushdie, Haruki Murakami, Don DeLillo, Tom Robbins...er...still working on the list. I am also challenging myself to travel the world via 12 books that provide a sense of place about a particular country. Between these two categories, I also hope to trim my backlog by 12. And thats my 2012 challenge.

Alondra Miller Plan: Read 12 titles that have been on my TBR the longest. No new books. my virtual TBR hit 300 today and i refuse to add anymore until i read 1/3 of what is on there now... so daunting of a task. :O

Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children 4 Stars! great read :D

Denise Little overlap here but I have already posted my 12+2 challenge in "Book Addicts". What I did not mention however, is my intent to read 125 books in 2012. My goal this year waas 100 but I made it to 124.

that is awesome denise. is it not amazing how you can set a reading goal and surpass it?? i joined GR in august and figured i could pump out about 5 or 6 books; and ended up reading 24 (4 for fun). I have never really thought about how much i read until i joined this site. It will be interesting in the coming year to find out how much i do read. my bookshelves are only telling part of the story...

12 Shakespeare Plays

message 10: by Vernell (last edited Jan 01, 2012 04:46PM) (new)

Vernell (vernellc) | 3 comments I hope to do the following:

12 from my TBR list on my e-reader
12 from my TBR list on my bookshelves
12 new releases

I will start with this and see what else I can fit in depending on how quickly I get through these.

message 11: by Jessica (new)

Jessica | 48 comments Guess I should've checked this first before posting on the old one. Anyway I plan on reading 12 books that I already own. As much as I love buying books my bank account hates it! Secondly I'd like to read 12 foreign authors. I choose a lot of American or British lit so I'd like to expand my horizons :)

message 12: by Normandy (new)

Normandy (bookwitch69) I have alot of books. I will set my goal at 12. I have made a list somewhere

message 13: by Mona (last edited Dec 27, 2011 07:17PM) (new)

Mona | 6 comments I think my goal will be to find 12 awesome books this year. I don't generally make myself finish anything I'm not really enjoying, but this year for no real reason I tried to. I ended up reading only 14 books (some rereads) and of the new books only enjoyed four. So I essentially sent myself back to high school English for 2011 (minus the week of mandatory standardized testing and five paragraph persuasive essays, fortunately).

So my plan is to embrace my complete lack of biblio-task commitment and search for 12 books that don't leave me sincerely wishing that I had spent my time watching The Price is Right instead. (I do realize that I probably miss out on loads of great books by abandoning them at around page 50, but on the plus side, I'm way better at the literary first lines game than I have any right to be.)

Cliff's notes version: My plan is to shamelessly read around until I find at least 12 neat books (any genre).

message 14: by Callie (new)

Callie (calliekl) | 646 comments I'll be doing the 12 oldest books on my TBR pile for sure. Beyond that I hope to tackle lots of Dickens, plus take a chunk out of my Presidential Biography challenge (read one book about each of the Presidents). I'd like to read more nonfiction in general. And, at least 1 book from each of the VT Retreat authors (although I did not manage to do that this year).

message 15: by melodie (new)

melodie b | 308 comments I plan to read at least all 12 book from every Booktopia author, which will end up being more than 12.

message 16: by Rita (new)

Rita | 147 comments 12 oldest books on my TBR list
12 classics
12 audio books

message 17: by Tasha (new)

Tasha 12 oldest books on my tbr
12 books on my real shelf

message 18: by Bobbi (new)

Bobbi | 153 comments Although I surpassed the goal I set for 2011, I don't necessarily
want to *add* 12 books for '12, so here's my plan for my 12 in '12:
12 books I already own (I TOLD you I liked that "reading from home" idea!)
12 books recommended by Ann and Michael
12 books by retreat authors
12 books from the ARCs I received at BEA
12 books I've always wanted to read

message 19: by Nancy (new)

Nancy Groves | 138 comments My general goal will be a total of 75 books, including print and audio and possibly a few on my Kindle (I've had a Kindle for nearly a year after winning it in a drawing but have never used it!). Within that total, I will challenge myself to read 12 books I already own. I have a habit of buying books on vacation, related to the location, and setting them aside once I get home and turn my attention to library books. I also want to reread some kids' or YA books that I bought when my son, now 21, was younger (Charlotte's Web, Winnie the Pooh, Phantom Tollbooth) or still have around from my own younger days. If I've held on to them for so long, they're worth another look.

message 20: by Valerie (last edited Dec 29, 2011 10:36AM) (new)

Valerie I'm going to read at least one book each from 12 catagories:

1. How things work - science, mechanics, biology, etc.
2. Biography
3. Philosophy or psychology
4. A subject I have never read a book about
5. A book that is about beauty (art, love, or any other thing that is beautiful and inspiring)
6. A novelist I've never read before
7. A book of poetry
8. A play
9. A book about someone that changed the world for the better.
10. History
11. A book of imagination (sci-fi or fantasy)
12. A book on some current event

That should keep me busy!

message 21: by Janny (last edited Dec 31, 2011 07:49AM) (new)

Janny (jannyan) Well, I'm in.
First of all I want to read 12 more books than in 2011.
And 12 of those books shall be thrillers.
And the 12 books on the list of my bookclub.
May be I'll think of another 12 in 12 .....

message 22: by Esther (new)

Esther (eshchory) My 12 in 2012 will be 12 paranormal books from my shelves with an emphasis on paranormal romance.
I seemed to have acquired quite a few books in this genre even though paranormal romance and I just can't seem to get on.
I hope to achieve two things - to read these books and free up shelf space for books I really want to keep and to discover if there is some paranormal romance out there that I do like.

message 23: by [deleted user] (last edited Dec 30, 2011 11:12AM) (new)

12 oldest on my TBR list
12 from my actual bookshelf
12 non-fiction

message 24: by Evelien (new)

Evelien (veelineen) | 1 comments My 12 would be 12 books from the BOTNS podcasts from 2011. That way I can also cross out 12 from my TBR list :)

Next to that, I also want to read all 12 from the boekgrrls.nl reading list for 2012.

message 25: by JoLene (new)

JoLene (trvl2mtns) 12 non fiction
12 historical fiction
12 mysteries
I would like to have these coming from my TBR pile, but I'm sure that I will succumb to the call of the bookstore at some point during the year :-D

message 26: by Rhonda (new)

Rhonda I'm going to read 12 books that I already own. I am working quite a bit more, so will keep my overall book goal at 38 (my accomplished goal for 2011)!

Good luck and Happy New Year everyone.

message 27: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer (jentwist) | 109 comments I'm going to commit to 12 books that I already own since I have a habit of buying my next book to read when I already have dozens on the shelf. Of course, that still leaves plenty of room for book buying! I could even think of it as stocking up for 2013...

Joanne-in-Canada (inkling_jo) | 255 comments Inspired by Simon of The Readers and Savidge Reads, I am going to read like it's the end of the world (you know, that Mayan calendar thing). This means I am going to read 12 books that I am really looking forward to, but am "saving" for some unexplainable reason!

The 12 will be drawn from this list, primarily authors I have never read or whose other book/s I loved, or a non-fiction book I have been putting off:

1. Searching for the Secret River by Kate Grenville
2. In the Land of Invented Languages: Esperanto Rock Stars, Klingon Poets, Loglan Lovers, and The Mad Dreamers Who Tried to Build A Perfect Language by Arika Okrent
3. Nikolski by Nicolas Dickner
4. something by Haruki Murakami, probably The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle
5. Super Sad True Love Story by Gary Shteyngart
6. The Corrections by Jonathan Franzen
7. Unbroken: A World War II Story of Survival, Resilience, and Redemption by Laura Hillenbrand
8. The Paris Wife by Paula McLain
9. The Blue Light Project by Timothy Taylor
10. Middlemarch by George Eliot
11. Emma by Jane Austen
12. What Now? by Ann Patchett
13. Blue Nights by Joan Didion
14. The Headmaster's Wager by Vincent Lam, due out in April.

message 30: by Paula (new)

Paula | 8 comments Happy New Year everyone!

My 12 in '12 reading plan goes something like this:

- 12 books already kicking around my house
- 12 audiobooks (finally starting listening in 2011, my commute is sooo much more enjoyable!)
- +12 books more than the # of books I read in 2011, which was 33 (my goal was 35 - oh so close)

Currently reading "Half Sick of Shadows" by Alan Bradley - great way to start off my 2012 reading.

message 31: by Sabrina (new)

Sabrina (sabrahb) My goal is 36 books. My 12 in '12 plan is to read:

12 - graphic novels (first time reading this genre)
12 - books that I already own (bound books/ebooks/audiobooks)
12 - misc

message 32: by Kate (new)

Kate | 270 comments Did not make my goal of +11 in 11, so I am sticking to a total of 60. 12 must be from books in my house and 12 more will be Ann and Michael recommendations ( of which there is considerable overlap) and I know I will read 17 for my 2 book groups. Another 12 will be Booktopia authors (going to Manchester, but will happily read others also). That leaves some room for "free books"!

message 33: by Justin (new)

Justin I just discovered this podcast in the last few months and this community in the last few weeks. I thought it would be appropriate to start speaking up with my reading plan for 2012.

I read 46 books in 2011 and don't think I'll be able to make it to 58 in 2012, though I'd like to try. A more realistic goal for myself is 52, as I've not read more than 48 since I started keeping track back in 2001.

I've decided my 12 in '12 Reading Challenge will be to read 12 books I missed in 2011. I typically like to read as many new releases as I can each year and tend to miss things I wanted to read from previous years. I didn't get around to Swamplandia! by Karen Russell or The Tragedy of Arthur by Arthur Phillips , for example, and I don't want to forget about them. So, 12 I missed in '11 in '12 it is.

message 34: by Ashley (last edited Jan 01, 2012 10:46AM) (new)

Ashley Hart | 7 comments In 2011 my reading goals were to read 55 books and to go through the alphabet with authors' last names. I managed to complete both, with the exception of a book by an author whose last name begins with X. I really like this idea for 2012, so I am going to do a few:

- 12 books I already have at home
- 12 non-fiction books
- 12 graphic novels
- 12 award winning books

There's a lot of overlap here, so I should be able to fit in some other books as well. I'm looking forward to all this reading in 2012!

message 35: by Tasha (last edited Jan 01, 2012 10:41AM) (new)

message 37: by Tammy AZ (new)

Tammy AZ (tammyaz) | 26 comments I have two 12 in 12 that I want to accomplish:

12 oldest books on my Goodreads TBR
12 "Big Books" - more than 500 pages - that I already own

I have a lot of big books at home that I need/want to read but have put them off in order to make a bigger dent in my TBR pile. This is the year I want to finally tackle some of those books.

message 38: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie (rudejasper) | 9 comments I thought about a lot of different permutations (12 books in each of 4 different genres, 12 books by never before read by me authors [Stephen King, Cormac McCarthy, Arthur Conan Doyle]) but decided I would muddle keeping track of that! So I'm going to keep it simple.

I do think I can read more than I did this year so I am going to do a +12 in 2012 which would make 73 books. My ultimate goal would be to get up to 100 or more books in a year.

I do think I will also try to make 12 of those books ones I have here at home - there are a lot of good ones waiting! And that's a really great idea people have had - Thanks!

And I do think I will try to sneak in some of those new (to me) authors.

message 39: by Deb (new)

Deb (legs32) | 5 comments I read 78 books in 2011 - 4 over my goal- so in 2012 my overall goal is 80 with 12 of them being the 12 books that have been on my too read list the longest

message 40: by Jen (new)

Tiffani (tiffanipassportbooks) | 17 comments There are currently 127 books on my TBR list. My goal is to get that list under 100, which means I have to both read at least 28 books from the current list but also read a book for any books that are added to the list in the coming year.

message 47: by Pam (new)

Pam Lauman | 99 comments My goal for 2011 was to read 84 books and I managed to read 103. I'm not sure I can read 12 more but I am planning to read 100. My other "12 in 12" goals are to read 12 books from my bookshelves, 12 ebooks I already own, and 12 audiobooks I already own. That would get 36 books off my TBR pile!

message 48: by Valerie (new)
