Hello jaxnsmom. I'll post something here when I finish the book. I'm about a quarter into it. So far I like it. It's somewhat spiritual, thought provoking. My husband read it and thought it was very good.

Paige (purplepaigeverizonnet) I am reading The Winter People- it is good and a bit Steven Kingish

message 762: by Kathy (new)

Kathy (kathy_lee) | 30 comments Parnassus On Wheels by Christopher Morley. Free on iBooks. This book is followed by The Haunted Bookshop which I also plan to read. It is really a very enjoyable old book and much better than some of the freebies that are newly written. How refreshing to read a well-written book that has a good plot and is thought provoking.

I'm posting from my iPhone app. Please excuse the lack of link for the books.

message 764: by Beth (new)

Beth | 206 comments Three non-mysteries I recently finished are:

The Almond Tree by Michelle Cohen Corasanti- 3 stars
This book has been getting a lot of hype, but I felt it wasn't particularly well-written and the characters were thinly drawn. Also, it's a very one-sided view of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, being pro-Palestinian, even though it's written by a Jewish-American.

The Lost Continent: Travels in Small Town America by Bill Bryson - 5 stars
This book of curmudgeon Bill's travels all around the US is a laugh-a-minute. Very enjoyable.

The Elegance of the Hedgehog by Muriel Barbery - 2 stars
I really don't understand what all the hype was about this book. I found it to be wordy and pretentious. It's obvious the author had an ax to grind about rich people who live in Paris. I probably wouldn't have finished it if I wasn't so curious why it was getting rave reviews and sales.

I listened to the latest Jesse Stone book, Robert B. Parker's Blind Spot. I like picturing Tom Selleck as Jesse as I read this series. To me he fits better than the actual character :)

I have that on my mp3 player. It'll be nice to catch up with the characters, like a comfy visit home.

message 791: by Jill (new)

Jill Tool I'm currently reading Blackberry Winter by Sarah Jio by Sarah Jio I have never read anything by this author and I'm pleasantly pleased with it. I've only got about 5 chapters left. The book moves along quickly. The story is about two woman, and every other chapter is about one of them. It's easy to keep track of what is going on in each of their lives. There is a little mystery to it as to what actually happened to Vera's son on that horrible that a snow storm hits Seattle on May 2, 1933. I would highly recommend this book.
