Olivia "So many books--so little time."" | 50 comments I just started reading the thriller The Prey by Allison Brennan. So far I've been enjoying it--it's about a writer of mysteries who discovers that murders in her books are being recreated by a killer.

Sallee (terrysallee2attnet) Just finished American Food by Evan Jones, which I have been working on for awhile, History and Cookbook in one for the foodie genre. I'm not a gourmand but I did enjoy the history and quite a few of the recipes are for us normal people. Also reading The Quick by Lauren Owen which is Victorian and gothic suspense. Have read the first 50 some pages so the jury is still out.

message 804: by Bonnie (new)

Bonnie Just finished Forgiven (The Trouble Series #0.5) by Rachel Morgan . Now reading Cry in the Night (Rock Harbor Series #5) by Colleen Coble

On our flight home yesterday, I listened to most of Zeitoun. I figured I'd get my Z book title out of the way early this year :)

I was checking out another book from the library and this one was right next to it and I thought it looked interesting so I got it also. Glad I did, it was one of the best books I read last year!

Loved that one when I read it ages ago, Jennifer :)

I've just started listening to Sandstorm, which comes highly recommended by a GR friend, and I'm hoping to finish The Happiest Season tonight.

message 816: by Sallee (new)

Sallee (terrysallee2attnet) Just finished The Quick by Lauren Owen, a Victorian Gothic horror story about the undead. Slow starting, it improved as I got into it and had a very satisfying ending.

How'd you like it? It's been on my tbr for a while now. I kept telling myself I'd read it for a Z title, but never did get around to it :)

It was a good story, but I think the controversy that came up after the book started getting all kinds of attention colored my opinion of the book itself. It was hard for me to see the main character in the glowing terms the author wrote, rather than the character traits -- or alleged character traits? -- that came out after the fact.

I read the first in this series and didn't think it lived up to the hype. Let us know what you think.

I'm listening to First Family, which got skipped before, so this will finish off the series for me. This one also has some sound effects. They seem to fit in better and aren't as noticeable.

message 824: by Nancy (new)

Nancy (gr-nancy-a) | 34 comments Amber Rules by Melissa Curtis is making this reader chuckle & laugh out loud..so far it's a 5 star read. [Another author, Jennifer Crusie, comes to mind as I read this.]

message 825: by Karen (new)

Karen (xkamx) | 580 comments I know I should read other genres, but just haven't been picking up anything but cozies (and the odd children's books, thanks to the niece and nephew!). They're interesting, fast, and fun, for the most part. Plus you get a touch of romance, paranormal, and fantasy. Sometimes there's even history lessons.

The other stuff I pick up tend toward the hard-boiled detective novel.

Olivia "So many books--so little time."" | 50 comments I'm reading a thriller called Hunting Season by P.T. Deutermann. So far it has been superb. Unputdownable. I highly recommend it.

❂ Murder by Death (murderbydeath) I'm currently reading Love and Freindship: And Other Youthful Writings as well as Dawn of the Belle époque: The Paris of Monet, Zola, Bernhardt, Eiffel, Debussy, Clemenceau, and Their Friends.

Jane Austen's writing as a juvenile reads a LOT like a Monty Python skit, no kidding. Lots of snark too.

Dawn of the Belle Epoque is the history of Paris from 1870-1900, focusing on the writers and artists of the time, so Manet, Monet, Rodin, Hugo, Zola, Bernhardt, Degas, etc. etc. Very easy reading and incredibly interesting.

I used to go through phases. For a long time I not only read mysteries, but mysteries written by women with female sleuths :D That included a lot of cozies.

message 830: by Teresa (new)

Teresa Decided it was time to read A Game of Thrones (A Song of Ice and Fire, #1) by George R.R. Martin . I'm enjoying but missing my cozies.

message 831: by Sallee (new)

Sallee (terrysallee2attnet) Just finished reading Skeleton Take a Bow by Perry Leigh and A Midwinter's Tail by Sofie Kelly. Both great reads.

message 832: by Nancy (new)

Nancy (gr-nancy-a) | 34 comments Finished Tragic by Robert Tanenbaum. Fans of MacBeth need to read this one. A 3 star review for me. Love the Butch Karp / Marlene Ciampi series. Setting: NYC. Courtroom drama for sure.

message 833: by Sallee (new)

Sallee (terrysallee2attnet) I am reading the Ilse Witch, The Voyage of the Jerle Shannara, first in a trilogy by well known author, Terry Brooks. I have read the second and the third and now will finish with the first. I like to read a series in order but it not always possible. These books can stand on their own, however. If you like fantasy, these would be a great choice.

You can't go wrong with this series. It is one of the best mystery series around. I love Inspector Gamache!

Bridget's Quiet Corner (chaptersandscreens) I'm currently on two books right now. One on my kindle, the other is a regular book.

Melodie (melodieco) Reading The Martini Shot A Novella and Stories by George Pelecanos The Martini Shot: A Novella and Stories. Pelecanos is one of the best mystery writers doing it today! He's most definitely NOT a cozy writer, but if you like a good noir thriller type book, he can do little wrong in my book! His Hard Revolution by George Pelecanos Hard Revolution is still one of my very favorite books!

I'm listening to The Path Between the Seas: The Creation of the Panama Canal, 1870-1914, by David McCullough. He's one of my favorite non-fiction authors, probably because his books aren't dry and boring the way a lot of history books are. I've always been fascinated by the Panama Canal, so when I saw that McCullough had a book about it, I didn't hesitate to add it to my list, and I'm glad I did.

I have an ARC,too. Don't think the book is actually released until the end of this month. Pretty good, so far!
