No James Patterson's series is more of a Women Detective series and I would put his books with Mystery and Crime. I have read the entire series and they are really well done.

I finally finished Cold Sassy Tree by Olive Ann Burns. I had a lot of issues with this book. It was just an ok read for me. It's described as a classic tale of small town life in the South and set in the early 1900s.

Reading this coincidentally while also reading The Warmth of Other Suns: The Epic Story of America's Great Migration, I moved back and forth between an idyllic coming of age story from the POV of a young white boy and a recounting of the terrors of life for 'colored people' during that same time period.

I don't often rate a book 1 star, but if it's that bad I will. And I usually attach a review as well to say why I rated it 1-star.

message 963: by Sallee (new)

Sallee (terrysallee2attnet) Just finished reading The Phantom of Fifth Avenue by Meryl Gordon which is about the mysterious life of Huguette Clark, who was one of America's wealthiest women and a parody of Downton Abbey by Gillian Fetlocks. One was fascinating, the other silly but amusing for DA fans.

message 964: by DKT (new)

DKT (dkt13) | 14 comments I read Huguette Clark's obit and remember noting somewhere I wanted to read more in-depth about her. The little bit I am familiar with seemed so sad, which I normally avoid sad like the plague, but felt kind of like as a sort of respect to her I should do it. Did you enjoy the book?

message 965: by Sallee (new)

Sallee (terrysallee2attnet) I did enjoy this book, This is the second one I've read about her and it was fascinating.

message 966: by Linda (new)

Linda Hurst (tbrpro2) I just finished Kill and Run by Lauren Carr. First in her new Thorny Rose series. It was fantastic i literally couldn't put it down. Finished it at 4 this morning. Good thing i am retired and can sleep in.

Sallee (terrysallee2attnet) Just finished The King's Curse by Philippa Gregory and if you like English history you will enjoy this one.

message 968: by Linda (new)

Linda Hurst (tbrpro2) Dipped into my Diana Palmer tbr pile and read a rerelease Miss Greenhorn which was as much fun I remembered and a new one Texas Born which was a classic Palmer and i loved it. Diana Palmer is my guilty pleasure and sometimes she just fits my reading need.

Beth | 206 comments I just finished reading Mary Coin, which my book club will discuss in October. Both NPR and the BBC chose it for a Best Book of 2013, and in its interwoven tale of three characters (one present-day) is a great introduction to the history of migrant laborers in California during the Depression.

I recently finished Furiously Happy A Funny Book About Horrible Things by Jenny Lawson which I loved. I also listened to A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms (The Tales of Dunk and Egg, #1-3) by George R.R. Martin - three novellas that take place about a century before A Game of Thrones. I'm currently reading A Guide to Being Born Stories by Ramona Ausubel , which has some very inventive stories.

Margaret's post form 11/24/15:

I've broken out my stash of Christmas books and have started with A Season of Miracles by Heather Graham. It never fails to put me in the Christmas spirit. Next up,I think, will be Mary Higgins Clark.

A Season of Miracles

Is it weird that I read these books over and over, year after year? My husband thinks so, but they make me so happy!

Margaret, I think if it makes you happy and gets you in the holiday spirit then your husband should be glad :) Isn't there some saying about a happy wife makes for a happy husband?

I'm listening to The Girl in the Spider's Web by David Lagercrantz The Girl in the Spider's Web, a continuation of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo trilogy. I'm enjoying it more now that Lisbeth Salander is more involved in the story. It felt like something was missing when she was on the periphery.

Mary (mw8019) | 273 comments I just started reading Concussion. It is about a doctor investigating concussions in football players. It is a movie coming out on Christmas Day staring Will Smith as the Doctor.

I was drawn to the book when I had my accident last month and suffered a brain bleed and broken hip when I fell. I saw Will Smith on the Ellen Show and became interested in the concussion discussion. I am now very interested in reading anything I can get my hands on about the head and brain.

Anyone have any recommendations on the subject?

Thanks,

Mary W

I don't normally read Nora Roberts, except for the In Death books she writes as J.D. Robb, but read these a few years ago. Really liked the first one and the last one was pretty good. Hated the 2nd one and the 3rd one was almost as bad!

Nancy West (nancygwest) | 8 comments I write humorous Aggie Mundeen Mysteries (SMART, BUT DEAD #3) but read lots more. Just read ALL THE LIGHT WE CANNOT SEE (excellent), THE NIGHTINGALE (superb), THE GIRL ON THE TRAIN (not so much), and am reading THE BOYS IN THE BOAT (fascinating.) But I always love a good mystery with humor and a touch of romance.
