I really enjoyed it. I could never have done what she did. I think I would have given up after day one. I read they are going to make it into a movie.

Jennifer (jhaltenburger) | 648 comments No cozies at the moment. More hard-core stuff-- The Concrete Blonde The Concrete Blonde (Harry Bosch, #3) by Michael Connelly , One Shot One Shot (Jack Reacher, #9) by Lee Child , and 11/22/63 11/22/63 by Stephen King . I guess this last isn't really a mystery but it feels like one where I'm at in the book because he's trying to change a history that is of course very familiar to me into something unknown.

message 111: by LynnB (new)

LynnB Currently I'm reading Atonement by Ian McEwan and The Happiness Project by Gretchen Rubin . Both are for book groups.

Sounds intriguing! And after seeing that Aaronovitch wrote several episodes of Doctor Who, I've put the first one, Midnight Riot (Peter Grant, #1) by Ben Aaronovitch on my tbr.

message 117: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer (jhaltenburger) | 648 comments I'm about 2/3 through The Concrete Blonde and am thoroughly enjoying it although in its own way it's a time-travel exercise, because there have been so many Bosch's since.... I'm really liking 11/22/63 too, although I got yanked out of the story abruptly today by two anachronisms in the space of about 25 pages! Stevie, boy, where was your editor!?

I thought it was a really great book. And I stopped reading Stephen King years ago. Going back in time to change history is a concept that's been done before, but King does an excellent job, creating suspense and making us aware of all the details involved in such a plan.

Karen (xkamx) | 580 comments Lately I've been downloading freebies for the Nook and Kindle apps. I have to admit there are a lot of freebie romances, but I have gotten a cozies, too. They've been filling my non-cozy time.

I have to agree. I swore off Stephen King after Cell by Stephen King which I didn't like at all, but decided to try 11/22/63 by Stephen King and found that he's back on form. Very cleverly done and thoroughly enjoyable

Denise (drbetteridge) It's slow going, but I'm nearly finished with The Monk by Matthew Gregory Lewis . It is good, but I had to take a break with Agatha Raisin just to survive.

Karen (xkamx) | 580 comments I've been downloading freebies for the Nook and Kindle (PC apps) and have been wasting valuable cozy reading some of those offerings.

The good thing is that they've offered some freebie cozies along with the ton of romance, erotica, thriller, fantasy/sci-fi, etc. The bad thing... Not all the cozies offered are firsts in a series and I like reading series from books one. I'm trying to get over that with the freebies because, well, they're free and because I don't want to invest in new-to-me series and wind up not liking them. If I can't find previous stories free (library, freebie, etc.), I will read what I have. It's not like I haven't read out of order before; it's just not my preference.

Denise (drbetteridge) It took me about four hours to read Fahrenheit 451 Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury yesterday. It's not usually my type of book, but a description of it got the best of my curiosity. It was a really good story!

It is one of the best examples of good scifi. You should check out the movie - really good too!

Karen Lowe I'm just about to start Shadow Of The Serpent - it's Victorian Edinburgh, with a touch of Sherlock Holmes and the first in the series. I'm determined to finish all the books I downloaded last year, only about ten more to go, but I have been distracted a bit and read a few of this year's downloads too. Will have to add Fahrenheit 451to my list though, as I've been meaning to read it for ages.

You are not alone. What is it about that character that is so appealing? Not just him, but everyone around him, Watson, Lastrade, Mrs. Hudson, etc.

I'm listening to an entertaining mystery, The Sherlockian by Graham Moore . Harold White, a new member of The Baker Street Irregulars, is searching for a missing diary of Arthur Conan Doyle. Alternating chapters tell the events of Conan Doyle's life during the diary's time frame. An intriguing book, with two separate mysteries.
