The daughter of Holocaust survivors, Pearl Goodman grew up in Toronto in the 1960s. In this exceptionally original memoir, written with wry humor and a sharp satirical eye, she juxtaposes popular culture with the jarring transitions and contradictions in her and her parents' lives. Striving to make sense of her emerging identity, she invokes TV shows, ads, movies, and distinctive details of the material and ideological landscape, while interweaving them with her parents’ harrowing wartime experiences of concentration and refugee camps, and the drama and uncertainty of their postwar emigration first to Israel, and then to Canada.
Reviews have been very impressive with one saying "a powerfully moving book that deals with the lingering intergenerational effects of the horrific history of the holocaust.."
Another one said "culturally informative and emotionally moving story". "Far More Than 'Coming of Age': Holocaust and Love" Peril: From Jackboots To Jack Benny

The book was fun, a lot of humor and colourful characters and funny scenes, not to mention plenty of action, things blowing up and creative, "out of the box" thinking. ... You know...Fun...enjoyable, and entertaining... that kind of fun.
I had a few minor things I thought could have been different but... did I mention it was a "Fun" read?
Fun means something to me.

I've just startedNerveI was wondering if anyone else has heard of it or read it yet. So far it seems good but I'm only 8 pages in so far.

Christoph Fischer's review Nov 30, 12
Read from November 29 to 30, 2012
“Jackie Blue” is a private investigator in LA who has just landed her first case. During the investigation regarding jewellery and insurance fraud she stumbles across the first of several dead bodies, leading to a much more complex set up than she has bargained for.
Her character is instantly likeable and interesting and the plot of her investigation moves swiftly along while Jackie has all hands full with her own busy social life. There is her hunky ex-boyfriend, a new potential love interest, her landlady (my favourite) and a colourful family to make this a rich and quirky novel.
The story is well plotted and entertaining, the life-like dialogue is well placed and technically it would be hard to fault the book for its many achievements. I felt however that the book was written for an audience other than myself, who has a (probably morbid) preference for heavy and serious fiction, and I would have liked the investigator Jackie to be a little bit more feminist and independent from the gun handling men in her surroundings.
This is the first in a planned series of Jackie Blue novels and I hope to see her come into her own in future instalments.
4 out of 5

Keep trying to finish it, but I'm too busying writing and marketing, lol! So much for my fun reading lately.

I also squeezed in a short but very funny parady by Vera Nazarian Vampires are from Venus, Werewolves are from Mars. It might not be for everybody, but I had fun reading it.

The story takes a twist when a Federal Judge by the name of Fawcett gets murdered along with his young secretary 5 years into Bannisters sentence. The guy can't keep his pants on but that doesn't come as much of a shock from a government official does it? Bannister uses the information he has to try to work his way out of prison and step into a new identity. Will it work? Bannister will come to learn that not everything is as simple as it seems.
I was happy with the ending....I was hoping it ended the way it did, but judging by a few of his past stories, I knew that he tends to end things however he pleases rather than how it "should" end...so I was pretty happy with the ending and felt it matched the rest of the book just fine.
Its more of a "puzzle" book, not too intense just a lot of figuring stuff out. And that's fun for me

I hadn't heard of this book. Sounds like a good read! I used to read Grisham quite a bit until I found out all his books are ghostwritten by a gal in my town (he's only written one full book himself)...but maybe will check him (err...her) out again. :)
My 2 faves of his are The Testament and The Last Juror - great character based books which is why I think they are my faves.
Thanks for the info on this book!

Donna, he's hit or miss. It just proves how hard it is to crank out greatness as often as he writes. He puts out a new book it seems every 9 months which is amazing

what do you make of it so far?
