message 1806: by Keith (new)

Keith | 70 comments Finished listening to The China Pandemic. Excellent first installment to a post apocalyptic series.

My next listen is Followed by Frost, a fantasy novel that I think may have too much romance for my taste. Hope I'm wrong about that.

Currently reading Barracoon: The Story of the Last "Black Cargo" by Zora Neale Hurston. Sad story of theife of a man who was brought to America on the last slave ship.

Half way through. Though not remarkable, so far, the way the author uses daily events in her young daughter's life as a backdrop and to also highlight some concepts, is interesting.

message 1828: by Dick (new)

Dick Long | 6 comments I just finished reading Harold Robbins’s Heat of Passion for the third time. I highly recommend it. You can find it on EBay for next to nothing. I consider Robbins the father of modern Erotic Romances if not the Godfather. I try to write like him, but I fear I don’t quiet make it.

The long wait begins. :D

I'm still on book 3. Although I'd like to read it I don't want to have to wait too long for the next book once I'm all caught up.

Please let me know how you'd rate it as compared to the other books in the series, though.

message 1842: by Ramla Zareen (new)

Ramla Zareen Ahmad | 10 comments I recently read Sophie Kinsella's latest publication: I Owe You One I Owe You One by Sophie Kinsella and was pleasantly surprised.

I say this because I was a big fan of Sophie Kinsella at one time. The first five or six books of her Shopaholic series and her standalones:
—Twenties Girl
—The Undomestic Goddess
—Can You Keep a Secret?
. . . are among my favourite romantic comedies. (Saving I've Got Your Number for later to read as a special treat. My friend assures me it's as good as the books I mentioned above :-)

But then her writing just seemed to have lost its spark. The later books of her Shopaholic series didn't appeal much, and her standalone: Wedding Night actually felt like it was written by someone else! I simply stopped reading her books altogether.

I'm glad I picked up I Owe You One, though. It wasn't a five-star read, but I could see some of her original spark in the book. Looks like I'm going to get my favourite romcom author back after all :-)

message 1843: by Ann (new)

Ann Harleman (goodreadscomann_harleman) | 10 comments Why read fiction? Because one life is not enough. Elizabeth Gilbert’s new novel, CITY OF GIRLS, offers that wonderful amalgam of experiences and wisdom that we hope for. Set in New York City from 1940 to 2004, it takes us inside the world of the theater and the heart ❤️ of a sexy, questing woman. Brava! 🙌

A toast 🍷to Pamela Frankau (1908-1967) 🙌 British 🇬🇧 novelist attuned to the interior lives of women and the music 🎶 of good strong prose. A Wreath for the Enemy is my favorite—but don’t miss The Winged Horse and the autobiographical (and fascinating) Pen to Paper. A Wreath For the Enemy by Pamela Frankau
