message 1903: by Linda (new)

Linda (lindalappin) | 4 comments I am reading French Exit -- ironic take on a very dysfunctional family you wouldn't want to know in real life but who are indeed entertaining.

message 1904: by R. (new)

R. Vazquez (rgarciavazquez) | 16 comments Currently reading The Nix by Nathan Hill. Pretty hefty tome (752 pages), but it's easy and quite entertaining reading. Part love story, part writer odyssey, part modern U.S. history (shifts among 60's, 80's and post-9/11 periods). Funny, lots of interesting detail, and skillful writing.

message 1905: by Justin (new)

Justin (justinbienvenue) | 792 comments Currently reading The Doctor and the Kid(Weird West Tales #2) by Mike Resnick

message 1906: by Russell (new)

message 1907: by Marc (new)

Marc Todd | 9 comments I've been reading The Coast-to-Coast Murders for almost three weeks now. I can usually get through a book in two weeks (not a bad book, but something about it is holding back my interest - although it could be because I've been super busy). My next read will be All Quiet on the Western Front (someone loaned it to me). But then, after that, I'm gonna read plenty of books from authors in this group. Looking forward to reading and supporting the independent self-published.

message 1908: by Shanna (new)

Published by DAW Books, Inc. - New York, New York - 2011.

message 1910: by Steven (new)

Steven Jr. (stevenhildrethjr) | 6 comments Task Force Desperate by Peter Nealen
Current read. Been slowly re-reading action thrillers I've enjoyed in the past. Might finally give Don Winslow a try next since I'm getting another hankering to try my hand at finally penning the elusive crime thriller

message 1911: by J. (new)

J. Rubino (jrubino) Currently reading "The Leavenworth Case," a classic locked room mystery by Anna Katherine Green. Originally published in 1878, is was Green's first novel, and a classic of detective fiction. Had read her book "That Affair Next Door" some time ago, and liked it a lot - well written, well plotted, and the detective, Green's spinsterly sleuth Miss Amelia Butterworth, is considered one of the precursors of Christie's Miss Marple.

message 1915: by Jeff (new)

Jeff I'm reading Serpentine (Alex Delaware, #36) by Jonathan Kellerman by Jonathan Kellerman

message 1916: by J. (last edited Jan 13, 2022 11:48AM) (new)

J. Rubino (jrubino) Read a quartet of novellas by Cornell Woolrich good setups, some good plot twists, but they tend to fall apart at the end.
Also read Charlotte Armstrong's psychological suspense novel "Mischief" which was made into the film "Don't Bother to Knock". I think it would have been tighter without all of the internal monologues, but overall pretty tense and suspenseful.

message 1917: by V (new)

V C Ackerman | 1 comments I'm reading The Secret History by Donna Tartt. Admittedly I first heard about it after seeing it everywhere on Dark Academia aesthetic boards, so I wanted to know what the hype was all about. It's very good!

thewildreaderwithacat | 4 comments It Ends With Us by Colleen Hoover

message 1919: by J. (new)

J. Rubino (jrubino) I've been reading a lot of Victorian era/Golden Age mysteries. I really enjoyed "The Twickenham Peerage" by Richard Marsh.
Just finished "The Return of the Pharaoh" by Nicholas Meyer. Meyer wrote the Sherlock Holmes/Sigmund Freud pastiche "The Seven Percent Solution"; this one is an adventure set in 1911 Egypt. I posted a review.

message 1920: by wormy ♡ (new)

wormy ♡ (wormyworm) The Book of Cold Cases

im less than halfway into it and color me unimpressed. i loved Sundown Motel so much. i just gotta keep pushing through, i adore Simones writing

message 1921: by J. (new)

J. Rubino (jrubino) I'm halfway through Anthony Oliver's "The Pew Group" the first of his four-novel, English countryside mysteries featuring the retiring Detective Webber and the somewhat eccentric widow Mrs. Thomas. I read the other three, but couldn't get my hands on the first, since the books are long out of print and the existing copies were quite expensive. Finally got the first.
Really superior writing, crafting of the plot and characterization - unfortunately Oliver (who was also an authority on rare pottery, wrote a couple books on the subject) passed away after the publication of the 4th book.

message 1922: by Reed (new)

Reed (reedster6) | 5 comments I’m reading 13 Reasons Why by Jay Asher

message 1923: by J. (new)

J. Rubino (jrubino) Reading Dorothy Cameron Disney's "Death in the Back Seat," which was written in the mid 30s. Very good so far.
Not to be confused with another very good suspense writer, Doris Miles Disney, nor with any other Disney.

message 1924: by J. (new)

J. Rubino (jrubino) I've been reading a lot of Richard Marsh. Marsh wrote in the latter 1890s into the early 20th century. Most of his books mix mystery with supernatural or seeming-supernatural elements. His 1897 novel, The Beetle was published in the same year as Dracula and outsold Stoker's work.
Marsh can be hit or miss, sometimes he over-writes, but his book The Twickenham Peerage, written in 1902, was one of my favorite reads of '22, the other being novel written in the 1980s, Anthony Oliver's "The Pew Group."
