silvia | 282 comments Started reading it yeasterday. I forgot how hard Dickens's language is for me. I'm going to have to take it slowly.

message 6: by Meg (new)

Meg (mkop359) This will be my third attempt at getting through Tale of Two Cities. I'm determined to make it this time! But it is definitely slow going..

Yuliya (yuliyalovestoread) | 1685 comments Yes.... I'm not sure when I will push myself to start it... I like to see Charles Dickens plays on the stage... But reading really annoy me.

message 8: by Jessica (new)

Jessica | 190 comments Agree that the language makes reading this slow.

message 9: by silvia (new)

silvia | 282 comments Its getting a little easier for me, my brain started to adjust to Dickens's prose. Although I apreciate the ironic and sarcastic social remarks. It took me about 30% (Kindle is messing up my page acounting) of the reading to start to realise what the story is really about. It was starting to get on my nerves...

Ashley (amarie007) | 22 comments Read this book in high school English and loved it. It was interesting going back and re-reading now that I'm older, adds more depth to the story.

tiasreads How are you guys enjoying this one? I'm not sure whether to read it or not. I had a horrible experience with Dickens in 9th grade. The worst English teacher in history made us read Great Expectations and analyze it to death. Is this book worth the effort?

You know, as difficult as I've found this book to get into - I think it's worth a try. And this time around you won't be forced to analyze anything if you don't want to.

message 13: by Sue (new)

Sue "Tale of Two Cities" is one of my favorite books of all time. I did not ever have to read it in school. I first read it when I was a "young married"; no kids yet, plenty of time to read. I've "re-read" it by listening to an audio version at least twice since then.

Annamarie | 36 comments This was one of my favorite books when I was in school. I read it first on my own and then later as required reading. I read it again after I graduated but it has been many years since I read it so I look forward to reading it again.

message 15: by Heather L (new)

Heather L (wordtrix) Finished early this afternoon. I had troubole sleeping last night, so was up until almost 6am reading, got within about 20 pages of the end before sleeping until 11. Finished early this afternoon, and liked it.

David Santos (authordas) I have it for my Ipod Ibooks. if its anything like The Scarlett letter I'm doomed.

message 17: by Meg (new)

Meg (mkop359) I just finished this past weekend and loved the ending. I still struggled to continue forging ahead throughout the book - but in the end it was great.

Dani (The Pluviophile Writer) (pluviophilewriter) | 237 comments I want to like Dickens but I just can't. He could have been such an amazing writer if he wasn't paid per word. Oliver Twist has been the only novel of his that I have enjoyed. A Tale of Two Cities is one of his duller works I hate to say.

Sheila (marblepdck) | 17 comments "A Tale of Two Cities is one of his duller works I hate to say. "................

Dull?!?!?! Unrequited love, mistaken identity, body snatching, Madam Defarge knitting the names and descriptions of those to die, sacrificing your life for the one you love, imprisonment, amnesia all set against the background of one of the bloodiest revolutions in history?

This is one of my favorite novels of all time.

I guess I dislike him that much... I was forced to read some of his books at University and can't say I really enjoyed any of them unfortunately.

message 21: by Yuliya (new)

Yuliya (yuliyalovestoread) | 1685 comments Yep. Dickens is too much wordy for my test too.(he was paid by word - I can understand him in this case) And I was not really thrilled by his books except Oliver Twist (I read in childhood) also. But movie, that I just watched (the same title, 1980) is very close to book plot and just sharpening the story and taking out "dullness" of book that was caused by too much wording
I did not practice skipping to movies instead of reading book, but doing it only for writers whose style I can't take (Dickens and . Austen), but would like to know the story
I found a movie on you tube

message 22: by Scout (new)

Scout (goodreadscomscout) | 193 comments Two of the best quotes in literature come from this novel:

"It was the best of times, it was the worst of times . . ."

"'Tis a far, far better thing I do than I have ever done."

It's worth reading the novel just to understand these quotes in context.

Yuliya (yuliyalovestoread) | 1685 comments beatiful quotes, and I noticed they put them in the movie too
