Lauren Smith The epic challenge is for 500+ page tomes - the epic novels we sometimes shy away from especially when trying to complete other reading challenges. You only need to read one 500+ page book in the 3-month period to complete the challenge, but you can read as many as you want and list them here, with the number of pages you've read.

Happy reading!

1Q84, #2, 501p (and then number 3, also a tome of epic proportions). Plus it counts as a trilogy for the DRC.

Same here. These days my reading list is dictated almost entirely by review copies, and I think I've only got one or two that are 500+ pages.

Chrizette | 906 comments Babara and Lauren - you should come and join the JUST FOR FUN challenge where you are challenged to read 1 book a month just for fun. No review requests, just a book for yourself :)

message 7: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Smith Lol, before I can get to the 'Just for Fun' books, I have to get through the 'Just for Reading Challenges' books.

I actually started reading it on 29 Dec BUT I am only on page 24, so I still have more than 500 to go. So hope it is still fine to join the challenge!

message 12: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Smith Yeah, that's cool, as long as you finish the book within the challenge period :) Otherwise you can start whenever you want.

Welcome to the epic challenge!

Katherine (kathldk) | 141 comments Woohoo! Just finished 1Q84, #2, 501 pages. :D It was AMAZING! Didn't feel like a tome at all. Unfortunately the third book is just under 500 pages so I can't make it a double win. :P

A friend once told me that I would enjoy Ken Follet, but with Wilbur Smith and Stephen King turning out all these Tomes, when will I ever get time for him?

If you were at less than 10% at the start of January I'd say it still counts.

I think we'll be kind and allow you that one. I have sympathy with you since The Algebraist isn't an easy read.

message 44: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Smith My rule is that it matters when you finish the book, not when you started, and since I sort of run this challenge, I say you can use it Mohammed.

message 45: by [deleted user] (new)

Aye, Aye, Cap'n. Thanks.

Crusader wrote: "... I have sympathy with you since The Algebraist isn't an easy read."

The book would have been good if it were 300 pages shorter and had some algebra in it.

message 46: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Smith You want it to have algebra?

message 47: by [deleted user] (new)

Just some real mention of it. Or at least an algebraist.

A villain which actually doesn't disappear mid-book would also have worked. I think it's the worst Banks book I've read. At the very least it's the one I disliked the most.

message 49: by [deleted user] (new)

It was my first of his so not a great introduction. I know both you and Lauren like his books though, so give me a recommendation.

message 50: by Lauren (last edited Mar 23, 2012 07:08AM) (new)

Lauren Smith The Player of Games, which is a good intro to the Culture. Also, Use of Weapons, which is particularly good the second time around.

The Wasp Factory was brilliant, although not sf.
