I have 2 questions: How do I color in the states on my map and can I use one book for more then one state? I just finished a book based in New York but two major parts take place in Rhode Island and Massachusetts.
Wonder how I missed this one previously, so let me backdate it to the start of the year for ease of editing.Challenge : The States Challenge

Just to let people know, there is now also an open-ended version of this challenge for those of us who just can't find all the states in one year (myself included!). Feel free to carry on here with the one year limit or transfer your list. It's up to you :)

I -thought- I read a lot of books set in the US, but since starting it have realized I don't read so many or they seem to only be set in certain states.
I know. I got California at least a dozen times on my first attempt!
I have only 9 to go so I think I'm good.I believe only a part of the story has to be set in a state not necessarily the entire book.

I think how much of the book is set in the state for it to count is up to each player. I started the challenge in another group and the rule there was the majority of it had to be set in the state, so that's what I go by but I think in this group the rules are slightly more relaxed :)

Since it wasn't stated in the rules, my take is that if at least some of the story is in a state it counts. The majority of my books are solely set in a state or most of it is but for some there has been a scene or two from it.
I know I'll get Alaska and Hawaii fairly easily but a couple of the others I'll go searching for.

That's absolutely fine JoAnne. Like I said, it's up to the individual player how they count a book. :)
I think I had most trouble with Delaware on my first attempt. Not an easy state to get!

I have to find it and see if I can get another book set in Black Dog Bay by Beth Kendrick.

4 left and I'm doing a library search for my last 2 books - Arkansas and Michigan - don't like the book I have for MI and I thought I was looking for ALI already have the books in hand for HI and SD (this will be a reread)

I find I don't search for books for challenges until almost the end of the challenge and see how any books I'm reading fit the various categories as I go along.
I'm sort of the same, read whatever I fancy and slot it in where I can and then frantically search for books to fill the gaps as the deadline approaches!!
