Shannon (sianin) | 453 comments The best that I read was Room by Emma Donoghue . I was scared to start it but really liked it. The next best were Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen , Cloud Atlas by David Mitchell ; Moloka'i by Alan Brennert and The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot . A very diverse group of books and I liked them for very different reasons. It appears that I was not taken with very many of the books that I read last year. Hope you had more excellent reads. (Of this list I only gave Room 5 stars - and it was the only one in the whole year!)

Janice (jamasc) | 59921 comments I would say that my favorite read for 2011 was Cathedral of the Sea.

message 3: by Kat (new)

Kat (katzombie) | 2478 comments I liked Room too.

My favourite was Swan Song, very closely followed by Rapture (there's also a giveaway for this one currently running on GR)

message 4: by Kate (new)

Kate Z (kgordon3) | 144 comments I'm still scared of Room but maybe I will try it n 2012. I have heard only good things.

My favorite read this year (the only one I gave 5 stars to) was Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close which was originally published in 2005.

Also loved Molokai, The Bells Let the Great World Spin and, recently, This Burns My Heart

Kimberly | 2033 comments I don't have One favourite... this is a tough one.

message 6: by Elizabeth (new)

Elizabeth I loved The Taker. I still think about it. I think my book club's going to read it in the next few months.

Janice (jamasc) | 59921 comments I was too lazy at lunch time to actually look at my 2011 list. In addition to Cathedral of the Sea, I had The Hunger Games Trilogy Boxset,
American Gods,
Anansi Boys,
The Pillars of the Earth,
The Last Days of Dogtown,
and A Prayer for Owen Meany.

Thanks Judy, sorry to hijack the group but am hoping to get a few ideas for this year's read from others' favourites.

message 9: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59921 comments I didn't see a hijack. Did anyone else?

Members are welcome to start new threads, encouraged in fact.

Robin (Saturndoo) (robinsaturndoo) This one is a toughie...I usually don't have favorites. It's sad that I can't pick a favorite but can most definitely tell you the ones I didn't like lol. I will have to think a little harder on this one.

I have heard about Room by Emma Donoghue but have not read it. Thanks for the reminder. I will have to add this one to my ever growing TBR list lol.

message 11: by Chrissie (new)

Chrissie My favorite book read this year was Portrait of a Turkish Family. My spoiler free GR review is here: http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/.... It explains how I felt when I read this book.

I own some of the Virgin River series. As anal as I am I won't read them until I get the first one and read them in order LOL

message 14: by Kimberly (new)

Kimberly | 2033 comments I agree with reading them from the beginning :)

Hey Robin the first 4 are on sale on Kindle right now as a bundle for 8.83 regular price is half that for one of the books in kindle format (not sure if you have those ones or are interested just a heads up).

Robin (Saturndoo) (robinsaturndoo) Thanks for the info!!! No, I don't have the first four, I have ones later in the series. I will check it out on amazon : ) Looks like I will be buying some more books lol.

Cheryl (cherylllr) I'd have to say that The Evolution of Bruno Littlemore was one of my very favorites last year.

message 20: by Tasha (new)

Tasha | 4 comments My best read this year was definitely The Hunger Games. It really got me back to reading, because it made me remember why this is such a worthwhile hobby.

message 21: by Shannon (new)

Shannon (sianin) | 453 comments Well, I guess I had better read The Hunger Games this year and I am very intrigued and so will add The Evolution of Bruno Littlemore (sounds like a potential book club book).

Dem, I haven't heard of any of those books. Will definitely look them up.

message 28: by Kimberly (new)

Kimberly | 2033 comments I was thinking about what other top books I read last year and I think Graceling (The Seven Kingdoms, #1) by Kristin Cashore was one of my favourites. I also loved all the Janet Evanovich and Robyn Carr books I read last year so their books are in my top books of last year too.

Susan (chlokara) Stefanie wrote: "A Fine balance by Mistry. It's my new all time favourite!"

I absolutely loved that book, but I read it a couple of years ago, so it doesn't count as my favorite 2011.

message 30: by Susan (new)

Susan (chlokara) My favorites of 2011 were: 11/22/63 by Stephen King; Replay by Ken Grimwood; Fault Lines by Nancy Huston; The Roots of Obama's Rage by Dinesh D'Souza; The Reluctant Fundamentalist by Hohsin Hamid; and Trespass by Rose Tremain.

Susan (chlokara) Thanks, Judy. I can also make a fool of myself on many different subjects. ;-)

message 34: by Sofia (last edited Jan 16, 2012 09:25AM) (new)

Sofia (sofiasmy) | 15 comments I have two favourite books from 2011. One would be The Book of Illusions by Paul Auster by Paul Auster and the other an epic fantasy: The Name of the Wind (The Kingkiller Chronicle, #1) by Patrick Rothfuss by Patrick Rothfuss. There were others, of course, but these two were those that I really enjoyed and I couldn't leave aside until I finished them :)
