"This review is from: The Green Book (Sunburst Book) (Paperback)
This book is about families leaving earth forever because earth is being destroyed. They can only bring a few things such as: one book, two personal items and so on.... Many people made a bad decision on what book to bring. Pattie, a girl on the ship, chose a blank paged book. Because nobody chose a fairy tale book, people forgot how they went,so people couldn't tell stories either. It took four years to get to the new planet,Shine. When they first got to Shine, there was a low amout of food. At the end of the book Pattie's book becomes use-ful. "

Please let us know when you know. Thanks, Tristam.
The book revolved around this group of poor colonists fleeing earth from a nuclear war or some other disaster. The rich people got to have top-of-the-line starcruisers and could take all their things to go to lavish planets, the poorer folks were put onto junker ships and sent to less than ideal conditions.
I remember scant details of children asking why they couldn't bring a projector onto the ship so they could look at slides of home, and something about one of the adults playing chess with the computer alot.
One of the points about the book that really stands out is that once they got to the planet and opened the ship, they saw a lake and lots of grass, and a bunch of children ran excitedly out barefoot. However, the grass was frozen, or something, so they ran back inside the ship because it had cut their feet.
I also seem to remember something about the lake being solid, and something with maize pancakes and lamp oil? It gets sketchy afterwards...
