Fantasy Aficionados discussion

Pick one of your favorite fantasy characters, urban or epic, any kind of fantasy. And tell me what distinguishes that character from others. It could be personality, appearance, favorite foods, manner of speech, etc.

For example: John Taylor of the Nightside books wears a white trenchcoat.

Harry Dresden of The Dresden Files carries a blasting rod.

Eugenie from the Dark Swam series loves Milky Way bars.




Mercy Thompson from the series by Patricia Briggs has pawprint tattoos on her belly and wears a sheep pendant as protection against vampires to represent her Christian faith.



Charles Cornick from Patricia Briggs' Alpha and Omega series has long hair he wears in a braid, has pierced ears with tiny gold hoops (although Anna, his wife bought him a pair of good hoops with amber chips in Hunting Ground). He also can manifest clothing after he shifts back from wolf form.

Felix Castor from the series by Mike Carey uses a whistle to exorcise ghosts.




Jane Yellowrock has long hair she wears in a braid. She rebuilt her own motorcycle, which she named. She has an animal spirit that shares her body that she calls Beast.

Both characters from two of my favorite books by Robin McKinley, The Blue Sword and Hero and the Crown are riders and I never picture them in my mind without the horses they ride. In Aerin's case, the retired white warhorse of her father's that she rehabilitates and in The Blue Sword, it is the big chestnut stallion Harry is given after she is kidnapped.

Most swords have names. Arithon's sword in the Wars of Light and Shadow is named 'Alithiel'. One could speculate that swords, being kind of the ultimate phallic symbol, are naturally named like most men name their Johnson's. Kate's is unusual in that it's a woman's sword.

Jon Snow from A Game of Thrones has a direwolf named Ghost for a companion.

From Wheel of Time Nynaeve constantly tugging on her braid.

Sand dan Glokta is severely crippled and lost half his teeth (where the teeth were removed above, they were left below, so that he can'teat solid foods). He uses his experiences to work as a torturer.

Elric has a demon-possessed sword named Stormbringer.

Harry has a talking Skull named Bob and a dog named Mouse.

Drizzt has two scimitar named Icingdeath and Twinkle, along with a huge black panther named Guenhwyvar.

Jon, when I read Magic Bites, it made me think of Stormbringer, since Kate's sword also has a lust for blood.

Locke Lamora from The Lies of Locke Lamora is known to be a terrible fighter.

D from Vampire Hunter D (one of those lovely dark fantasy/horror blends from Japan)has a cursed hand which talks to him and is quite a bit more outgoing than he is.

Fenuil, a dragon in Dragon Slippers, collects dogs and treats them like children.

Mat Cauthon, Wheel of Time, Just one of the funniest characters there is for me, and I love his habit of comparing people to one thing or the other. Of course there's the scar around his neck from surviving his hanging that he covers with a handkerchief.

Fiddler from the Malazan series carries around a fiddle.
(that sounds kind of ridiculous.)

Hobbits have hairy feet.

Kenders have topknots and many pouches

Nicci from Sword of Truth always wears black.

(So naturally when they made a show based on the series, they have her wearing red- go figure).

MacKayla Lane from the Fever series love the color pink. Faefever

Dragons of Autumn Twilight

Raistlin has golden hourshaped pupils.

Skeeve from Robert Lynn Asprin's "Myth" series has a baby pet dragon named Gleep.

So does Druss' double-headed ax, Snagga the Sender in the Drenai Saga.

Haplo, from Death's Gate Cycle, is covered in magical runic tattoos and has a shaggy black and white dog.

And Kvothe... well, he's Kvothe, you may have heard of him. I like Kvothe because he's got a balance of ridiculously dangerous stunts and failures. And he has a fae prince and a sword named Folly.
