I recently claimed my author page, rather than just being a general GoodReads punter and am still finding my way around the new layout of my page. It's a shame this isn't customisable, but I can understand why it's not. I do wonder though, if it's possible to reclaim my featured "favourites" shelf that has now vanished.

Unfortunately, not at the moment. When you claim an author profile, your published books sort of take the place of the favourites area. There are plans to add a featured shelf for authors, one that could feature books you have enjoyed or books that have influenced you (sort of like the "influences" section but more engaging and graphically appealing).
