Great picks, Angelica!

Now, I just have to decide which one to read. I'm torn between James' [book:Practice Makes Perfect|5082599] and Clare's Extreme Exposure. Also, The Bronze Horseman looks very good, and plenty of Lisa Kleypas books to choose from.

I'll let you know later what I have decided on.

Again, thanks!

message 376: by Kimberly (new)

Kimberly Cathy
Sorry for taking so long but here's your list!

Cupids rules! Romance abounds :)

Always and Forever: Recommend a book from a series or author that your pickee already loves.
I saw that you liked two of her other books so I recommend Annie's Song
Cupid Rules!: Recommend a romance!
I loved this sweet romance when I read it The Magic of You
Diamonds are a Girl's Best Friend: In honour of the leap year tradition where girls propose to guys choose a book with unconventional gender roles or characteristics for the lead characters (kick-ass girls and wimpy guys count!): To me Anita Blake is one kick ass vampire hunter so I recommend Guilty Pleasures

Screw Cupid! Who needs romance when you have books?
Single and Loving It!: Recommend a stand-alone novel.
I saw it on your TBR shelf and I think since this one is a cute read and a stand alone that it's perfect for this Mermaid: A Twist on the Classic Tale
Stupid Cupid - Stop Picking on Me: Recommend a book from a genre other than romance - horror, sci fi, fantasy, crime. Anything low (or non-existent) in terms of romance.
Saw this on your TBR list and it's a book I gave 5 stars to. Being a juvenile fiction book I think it's a great choice! The Lightning Thief

Valentine's Day Massacre: In honour of the 1929 Valentine's Day Massacre, choose a book that features gang/mob crime or murder or is set in Chicago.
I recommend The Godfather when I think mob I think of this book which is really good!

Other stuff happens in Febuary you know - buddy reads
Black History Month: Pick a book that is written by a black author, has a black main character or a black cover.
Naked is not on your tbr list but I've been told its a great book.
President's Day (and Lincoln's birthday): Recommend a book that is set in the US, features politics or was written by an American author.
Rainshadow Road is set in the U.S. :)

Maslenitsa (Russian spring festival): Recommend a book set in Russia, with a Russian character or written by a Russian author.
I see that you like historical romance and I've been meaning to this one read for years is The Bronze Horseman

Bonus Time!
My little sister is getting married on February 4th so here's a bonus category to pick for - select a book that is fourth in a series, has a younger sister character or features a wedding :)

This is both the 4th book in a series and features a wedding and looks like a good read The Accidental Wedding

message 396: by D.G. (last edited Jan 31, 2012 03:40PM) (new)

D.G. | 4477 comments Hi Brett!

I see from your profile that you like historical fiction...me too! That's why a lot of my suggestions leaned towards historical in one way or the other. I also ended up giving you some of the same suggestions I gave my other pickee...but mostly because they really fit the categories or were books I really enjoyed. Hope you find something below you like. :)

CUPID RULES! ROMANCE ABOUNDS
1. Always and Forever:

Where Dreams Begin by Lisa Kleypas: I see you've loved the contemporaries you read by Lisa Kleypas so I thought you should try one of my favorites of her historical romance. The tone is very different from her contemporaries (she almost seems like a different writer) but they are also very good in their own right.
Taken by Midnight by Lara Adrian: You seem to be enjoying this series...it's time to continue!

2. Cupid Rules (Romance):
Mr. Impossible by Loretta Chase: One of the most hysterical books I've read with a different setting (Egypt) and crazy, 'not very smart' hero.
Do Over by Mari Carr: Very romantic novella about a couple that it's re-discovering themselves after years of marriage.

3. Diamonds are a Girl's Best Friend (unconventional gender roles): Middlesex by Jeffrey Eugenides: Gender roles are unconventional with a capital U in this book (won't say more because I don't want to spoil it.)
The Battle Sylph by L.J. McDonald: In this book, the men are slave to the women (it's not as creepy as it sounds...you must read it to see what I mean.)

Where Dreams Begin by Lisa Kleypas Taken by Midnight (Midnight Breed, #8) by Lara Adrian Mr. Impossible (Carsington Brothers, #2) by Loretta Chase Do Over by Mari Carr Middlesex by Jeffrey Eugenides The Battle Sylph (Sylph, #1) by L.J. McDonald

SCREW CUPID! WHO NEEDS ROMANCE WHEN YOU HAVE BOOKS?
4. Single and Loving It! (Standalone):

Ready Player One by Ernest Cline: I see you don't read as much Sci-Fi but this is one of my favorite books from 2011!
Fallen from Grace by Laura Leone: Very romantic book with a tough theme.

5. Stupid Cupid - Stop Picking on Me! (genre other than romance):
Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury: One of my favorite classics, still very relevant today.
Hounded by Kevin Hearne: Really funny UF with funny hero and an amazing sidekick.

6. Valentine's Day Massacre (set in Chicago): It Had to Be You by Susan Elizabeth Phillips or Paradise by Judith McNaught: These are both old romances (written in the 90s) set in Chicago. They are both awesome though so you should give them a try.

Ready Player One by Ernest Cline Fallen from Grace by Laura Leone Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury Hounded (Iron Druid Chronicles, #1) by Kevin Hearne It Had to Be You (Chicago Stars, #1) by Susan Elizabeth Phillips Paradise (Second Opportunities, #1) by Judith McNaught

OTHER STUFF HAPPENS IN FEBRUARY (BUDDY READS):
I'm in a very funky mood so I'm not sure I'll be able to do any buddy read with you. Some books I read already (I just thought they were good fits for the categories) and others I might be able to read with you if I can get my head straight. Just let me know!

8. Black History Month :
Red Sky in Morning Patrick Culhane: This book is about African American sailors in the Navy during WWII. I really enjoyed it.
Daughter of Smoke and Bone by Laini Taylor: My first 5-star book of 2012! Totally recommend it.

9. President's Day :
Delirium by Lauren Oliver: Not sure if you like YA dystopias but this book made me cry buckets (which for me, means it's awesome.)
Extreme Exposure by Pamela Clare: One of the best romantic suspense series out there.

10. Maslenitsa (set in Russia):
Between Shades of Gray by Ruta Sepetys or The Bronze Horseman by Paullina Simons: I haven't read either of these but they come highly recommended.

BONUS TIME! A Murder Is Announced by Agatha Christie (this book can be read as a standalone)

Red Sky in Morning A Novel by Patrick Culhane Daughter of Smoke and Bone (Daughter of Smoke and Bone, #1) by Laini Taylor Delirium (Delirium, #1) by Lauren Oliver Extreme Exposure (I-Team, #1) by Pamela Clare Between Shades of Gray by Ruta Sepetys The Bronze Horseman (Tatiana and Alexander, #1) by Paullina Simons A Murder Is Announced (Miss Marple, #4) by Agatha Christie )

message 397: by Mandy (new)

Mandy (mandypants) Lady Allison St. Vincent,

Ok. I think my recs are all over the place. Let me know if I completely missed the mark and need to try again or if you want to read one of the buddy reads.

Always and Forever: River Marked- It's not Briggs' best work, but you have to read it.
Cupid Rules!: Your Scandalous Ways- I think you'll really like the witty banter in this one.
Diamonds are a Girl's Best Friend: The Iron Duke- Mina's pretty unconventional with her being a female detective in Victorian England.

Single and Loving It!: Agnes and the Hitman- You've read tons of Crusie. How have you missed this one? It's my favorite of hers.
Stupid Cupid - Stop Picking on Me: The Gargoyle- The beginning's pretty rough, but it gets so much better.
Valentine's Day Massacre: Don't Mess with Texas- The heroine is a murder suspect. Cute book. I might have a mug, key chain, and cap printed with the saying/title. That happens to a Texan once leaving Texas.

Black History Month: Lothaire- Black Cover
President's Day: The Peach Keeper: A Novel- Set in North Carolina
Maslenitsa: Scent of Darkness- Russian Character

Bonus: Ain't She Sweet- Has a wedding with an older bride than the usual romance novel.

River Marked (Mercy Thompson, #6) by Patricia Briggs Your Scandalous Ways (Fallen Women #1) by Loretta Chase The Iron Duke (Iron Seas, #1) by Meljean Brook Agnes and the Hitman by Jennifer Crusie The Gargoyle by Andrew Davidson Don't Mess with Texas (Hotter In Texas, #1) by Christie Craig Lothaire (Immortals After Dark, #12) by Kresley Cole The Peach Keeper A Novel by Sarah Addison Allen Scent of Darkness (Darkness Chosen, #1) by Christina Dodd Ain't She Sweet by Susan Elizabeth Phillips

All Through the Night: A Troubleshooter Christmas - this is like my favorite TS of all time...I love Jules and Robin
Rapture in Death - you like Nora and JD Robb, so how about the next in death book
or Fire (since you liked Graceling and the last book in the trilogy is due out this year) or The Fault in Our Stars (since you liked the other John Green that you read)

Cupid Rules!
sooo many choices...so here are a few:
Lothaire, Mine Till Midnight, Reckless or Lust

Diamonds are a Girl's Best Friend
Since i'm a woman in a male dominated job, I love this category, so here are two choices for you: No Mercy (She is a former army sniper) or Succubus Blues (sex demon)

Screw Cupid! Who needs romance when you have books?
Single and Loving It!
My One and Only or Untouched

Stupid Cupid - Stop Picking on Me
The Surgeon - the first in the Rizzoli and Isles series, or The Name of the Star (a YA Horror, Jack the Ripper kind of story)

Valentine's Day Massacre
Fool Moon - how about continuing on with the Dresden Files, or you could try Some Girls Bite (the first book in the Chicagoland Vampires series) or A Lot Like Love (I was also recommended this one this month, if you maybe want to do a buddy read)

Other stuff happens in Febuary you know - buddy reads
some of these I have already read, but they fit so perfectly that I had to recommend them. I put a star next to them (*) if I hadn't

Black History Month
Harvard's Education - since you like Brockmann's TS, this is the series that predated it and was one of the first serial romances to feature 2 AA people on the cover or for just dark covers, how about trying The Restorer*, The Night Circus* or The Tiger's Wife*

President's Day (and Lincoln's birthday)
You have a fairly diverse reading portfolio, so I decided to steer away from romances here, and go with some other stuff, so how about State of Rebellion* or The Great Divorce: a Nineteenth-Century Mother's Extraordinary Fight Against Her Husband, the Shakers, and Her Times*

Maslenitsa (Russian spring festival)
i've read both of these books, but really liked them - The Bronze Horseman - a historical fiction set during the Battle of Leningrad during WW2 or Between Shades of Gray - a YA about Stalin's annexation of the Baltic states during WW2.

Bonus
I cut my romance teeth on LaVyrle Spencer and can't believe you don't have any of her on your shelf, so how about The Endearment or for something about sisters, Between Sisters

Mandy (mandypants) Thanks for the picks, Dee! You haven't picked for me before, but you did a great job. There are SO many books to choose from. I know I'm going to read Lothaire and The Night Circus. Some of the others are going on my TBR.

Thanks again!

Lady Allison | 118 comments Thank you for the great recs, Mandy!!! I put the Loretta Chase historical on hold at my library - I'm a sucker for witty banter! I also put the audio version of Agnes & the Hitman on hold since I ADORE Jenny Cruise's books come to life on audio :) I see above that you'll be reading Lothaire too, I'd love to do a buddy read with you (& anyone else who happens to be reading it this month!) Let me know if that works for you & thanks again! :D
