Jensownzoo | 200 comments Okay, I wasn't all that impressed by The Anubis Gates, but I realize that personal taste can come into play with this book. So, my question to those who have read and enjoyed more of Powers' work--which one did you enjoy best? And why? I am willing to give him another shot, but I'll need your help picking the next selection.

Sandi (sandikal) I read "Declare" recently and it was much, much better. However, it is very detailed and very dense. It takes a lot of mental concentration to read it. I think it's a wonderful book, practically flawless. However, I could not finish it the first time I tried to read it because of how dense it was.

"The Anubis Gates" is the second and only other Tim Powers book I have read.

Brad (judekyle) | 1607 comments I may give Declare a shot myself. Thanks for the tip, Sandi.

Brooke | 0 comments I haven't read any by him, but despite its flaws, I was intrigued enough by The Anubis Gates to give him another shot. I'm especially interested to see how his later ones have improved, since Anubis Gates is from pretty early on in his career.

Cairnraiser | 53 comments Unfortunately I've been unable to get Anubis Gates in order to participate in this discussion.

I've read Declare and Three Days to Never and I'd recommend both, though as Sandi mentioned they are both pretty dense.
However I like his version of "Urban Fantasy", placing the fantastic in the world as we recognize it today, without turning it into something flashy with vampires/werewolves.

H. R. (ndoerrabbott) | 55 comments I have read Three Days to Never: A Novel as well, enjoyed it, but assumed Powers was a 'one theme wonder', and that other novels by him would be variants on his metaphysical world view. Regardless, am open to hearing about any Powers book that is quite exceptional.

Jensownzoo | 200 comments Looks like I have a couple more to try. Thanks everyone!

Hotspur (hotspurot) | 28 comments The Drawing of the Dark, an early work, is lovely Arthurian fantasy, of sorts.

Keith I like "On Stranger Tides." It's got pirates, a ghost ship, and the Fountain of Youth. Actually this sounds like this story could start where the third "Pirates of the Carribean" movie ended. Except the main pirate is Blackbeard. It is a entertaining book.

That sounds awesome.

Sarah | 243 comments The Anubis Gates was my favorite, but The Stress of Her Regard is also excellent. It involves Lord Byron, the Shelleys, and all sorts of creatures from European mythology.

I also enjoyed On Stranger Tides and the Drawing of the Dark. And I loved Last Call, which involves poker and mythology, though I have to say I hated both books that followed it.

I've got Three Days to Never on my shelf but haven't read it yet, and I couldn't get into Declare or his collection of shorter fiction.

Richard (mrredwood) | 165 comments I finished Last Call last night, and can definitely recommend it. I think it was a much stronger and more intriguing story than Anubis Gates. It has its flaws -- but I can't recall reading a book that I thought was perfect, though. If you'd like to discuss it, here is my review.
