Amanda (tnbooklover) Have you considered doing any kind of group listens or audio of the month discussion type threads?

message 3: by ☻Nikki☻ (new)

☻Nikki☻ (nikkic1998) | 480 comments Yes, I started an Audiobook Nomination thread where we can nominate books to read as a group. Hadn't had a whole lot of response yet. I'd love to do a group read though. Even if we only get a few people involved I think it would be fun.

I like that idea. If there are others interested let it be known.

Sally (salgalruns) Do you want to start a new thread for August (or Aug/Sept) suggestions? I'm new to this group, so wasn't quite sure how long the books stay "current" for discussion.

message 6: by ☻Nikki☻ (new)

☻Nikki☻ (nikkic1998) | 480 comments The way I had it set up was for everyone to nominate books. I would add these books to our bookshelf. Then every month I would use a random number generator ( http://www.random.org ) to choose 3 books. I would then take those 3 books & make a poll for us to vote for the book we wish to listen to for the month. The books that didn't win will go back on our bookshelf for next time. I hope this makes sense. Here is the link to our book nomination thread: http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/8...

If you would like to see the books on our bookshelf you can click on bookshelf on the menu on the top right of this page or here is the link to it: http://www.goodreads.com/group/booksh...

Abby (queenmabigail) | 2 comments 1. More genres in the recs section. What about high fantasy, or even just general fantasy, instead of just PNR and urban?

2. A help/tips section. For example, I just downloaded a 28-book pack only to find the narrators sound like robots and half of the chapters have no name or number. It would be nice to have somewhere to ask whether anyone has found these books in a better format, how to know if you're downloading a robotic book meant for blind people, etc. (And tips in general - best sites, etc)

message 8: by ☻Nikki☻ (new)

☻Nikki☻ (nikkic1998) | 480 comments I'll add those right away Abby.

message 9: by Ions (new)

Ions | 5 comments For the group listens what if we do it by genre. I love the idea me listening along fellows, but I many of the books suggested aren't really my style. Maybe if it were divided up by genre there would be more willing to participate.

message 10: by ☻Nikki☻ (new)

☻Nikki☻ (nikkic1998) | 480 comments I wouldn't mind that, but I have trouble getting recommendations for reads of any genre. I know this month's read-a-long wasn't really my style either. If people would be interested I would be willing to try it.

Jennifer C Hi Everyone, I was just looking and we have so many members in this group but we are a little quiet.

Are there topics you guys would like to chat about? Are there games/challenges we can enjoy together?

What makes a group good for you? For me, its the interaction with people and getting to meet new people and make new friends.

Pat (crabpatty) | 35 comments Hello All,
I wanted to pass on an interesting YouTube video. How Johanna Parker, who is the voice of Sookie Stackhouse does the recordings. It is titled "Inside the Studio".
We all listen and love the inflections and voices, but there is much more that goes into our listening pleasure than we know. It is over 8 minutes long but it is a good 8+ minutes. I appreciate the readers abilities more. Check it out!

Linda Boyd (boydlinda95gmailcom) | 108 comments Pat, do you have the link to this? It sounds like an interesting article. I can't imagine what is involved in settting one of these up.

message 15: by Pat (new)

Pat (crabpatty) | 35 comments Hi Linda, Sorry, I am not the best when it comes to the links and not savvy, but I happened upon this by Google, then YouTube-ing . Then I went to Johanna Parker and found the presentation. It is just titled "Inside the Studio.
But here goes, I hope it works...
www.youtube.com/watch?v=Okr7s-uMYju
Hopefully you will get the right one.Let me know, okay?

message 16: by Jennifer C (new)

Jennifer C That was really awesome to watch Pat. Its amazing how much work goes into just one line. She has a beautiful voice. I will have to look up what else she has narrated besides the Sookie books.

message 17: by Pat (new)

Pat (crabpatty) | 35 comments I was so pleased to have that link work! I am listening to another narrated by Johanna Parker, it is a cute story so far- The title- "The Penny Pinchers Club" by Sarah Strohmeyer.

But I really have enjoyed her voice. I listened to all of the Sookie Stackhouse books. I think part of the draw of a book, is the person that the author chooses to have the book read by.

By the way this is a really great chance to share books that I have enjoyed via AudioBooks! Such a great idea I wonder who came up with the idea in the first place? Anyone know this answer?

If you go to Simon & Schuster's site, you will see that she has 6 more books that she has narrated. 2 Jennifer Weiner, 2 Fern Michaels and 2 others....

Linda Boyd (boydlinda95gmailcom) | 108 comments Bummer! I got that the video is no longer available. I will search for it later.

message 19: by Pat (last edited Feb 27, 2013 08:43PM) (new)

Pat (crabpatty) | 35 comments I got it from the Library. Have you tried there? Our Library allows us to reserve up to 50 at a time. It is great until you get 10 holds all at once!

message 20: by Jennifer C (new)

Jennifer C I will have to look for her other books and I do have the Penny Pinchers Club on my TBR pile. It looks like I may have to choose to read that one via audio. :)

Thanks Pat. :D

I looked to be sure I had not given the wrong info- you are right, and it is not there anymore. Sorry. But I did find it by going to Google, and entering Johanna Parker Narrator.

message 22: by Jennifer C (new)

Jennifer C I found it by going to you-tube and typing her name in. :)

message 23: by Linda (new)

Linda Boyd (boydlinda95gmailcom) | 108 comments I will check it out when I get home from work tonight - thanks!

message 24: by Jennifer C (new)

Jennifer C After watching that video, Pat, I had a different listening exprience as I listened to my current audiobook. I pictured the narrator sitting in a booth and wondering how many times it took him to get his intonation correct and so on. It was a good thing. I think it gave me a better appreciation of the story teller.

message 25: by Pat (last edited Mar 01, 2013 06:35AM) (new)

Pat (crabpatty) | 35 comments I did too! I also find that I spend time thinking of all the things I touch and see during the day and wonder who made them, and how much work went into their efforts. I think when we do that, or perhaps I do, that we have a better appreciation for all the things around us.

I both love and hate when a book is so touching that I am crying or laughing. I do prefer to laugh, and Fanny Flagg can do that....or absolutely sob, One Thousand White Women..The Shoemakers' Wife, Adriana Trigiani's newest. Some of the books just touch my heart!

I have actually had to put it to the side for a few days. I do tend to get wrapped up in the stories! Does anyone else get this effect from their reading via AudioBooks? I find myself pondering a situation, and thinking, now what would I do if that were me?

I am so very glad my friend introduced me to the great big world of Audio-Bibliophiles! I really would be missing a great opportunity to enjoy so many great books!

message 26: by Gaele (new)

Gaele | 5 comments there are several 'less than honest' sites listed in the 'where to find'. While I understand that many were put in place before the 'rule of no pirate sites' - those links should be (imho) removed. There are tons of free and legal ways to get books - not the least of which is to review for authors who are releasing them.

Gina's (ginasgoodreads) | 3 comments How about...

games to play like Audio Sprinting: You set the time to read starting on any minute your clock has and in the end you post how many chapters you could listen to in that time, this helps you with making time to listen to books and get on schedule with reading. It's fun and you can also comment on the book that you are listening to.

Greetings.

message 28: by Cheryl (new)

Cheryl (cherylllr) Gaele, I agree. I'm not sure the mods know which sites are unethical - maybe sending one of them a PM would be helpful?

My suggestion is, that whoever nominated the winner of the book-of-the-month discussion should be encouraged to lead the discussion.

Thanks Cheryl and everyone for your input. I like your idea Cheryl about the winning book for the group read having its nominator/s being encouraged to lead the discussion is worthwhile.
