RandomAnthony | 14536 comments Hey, assuming you don't have to work (and if you do...um....have fun?), have a great Thanksgiving weekend, everyone. Are you doing what you want to do? Why do people do things on holidays they don't want to do, anyway?

Today is our Thanksgiving. Allow me to explain. My wife is working today so I'm home with the kids. We'll do the Thanksgiving dinner thing and watch a movie (Fred Claus, probably) tonight. We got a sweet deal on a local indoor waterpark/hotel tomorrow, and we're hoping that everyone else will be eating Thanksgiving dinner with relatives they don't like while we have the waterpark to ourselves. We'll be back home Friday afternoon/night. The rest of the weekend is wide open, although I might go into work Sunday morning to prepare for the busy last week of classes. We'll see. I'm exhausted today, so I guess it depends on how much rest I get on Saturday.

I also might go shopping, but not Friday morning. From what I can see online with the ads, there's no good reason to brave the crowds.

And....you?

Saturday is our local main street's Christmas tree lighting. There is a stage with carolers and then Santa comes down Main Street on a firetruck and lights the tree and hands out candy canes. Every year my friends and their kids come to my house afterwards for cake and cocoa.

This evening was brought to you by the letter c.

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments Sarah: This evening was brought to you by the letter c.
Hee!

My mom's coming down from Seattle (actually Redmond) tomorrow morning (which means I need to do some cleaning tonight! Yikes!), and in the afternoon we're all going over to Chris' parents' house for the turkey dinner.

His sisters and their kids will be there, too, so I'll get to watch my nieces and nephew dance around and eat all the olives (when they aren't putting them on their fingers).

Friday, mom and I are going to shop in Olympia, there's a shoe store downtown mom really likes. And then we'll probably have lattes, and then walk around Capital Lake because I like to walk after all the feasting.

On Saturday, I'm going up to Redmond to shop with mom and my best friend up there. And maybe catch a movie. And walk around Green Lake if I can persuade everyone to go into the big city.

There is no lake at Camp Green Lake.

I know! Just desert and yellow spotted lizards which are extremely poisonous. I guess I'd better walk very quickly, then, so the lizards don't get me.

Sploosh, anyone?

RA, You are going to an indoor waterpark/hotel for Thanksgiving day? AWESOME! I loooooooooove water parks, and remember once upon a time in Denver there was a Celebrity Fun Center with a few indoor slides (as well as mini golf and bowling) but this is a whole park of slides??? Kick-ass!

I'm bittersweet about Thanksgiving being tomorrow. This means I have to have these papers complete (which they mostly are) by tonight. Then I'll make some cranberry sauce over at my mom's house. She is making a birthday dinner for Sweeter, so I imagine there will be lasagna and cake or something.
Tomorrow we will probably head down to Centennial rather early, and get our festive on. Matt's mom makes a very Kentuckian thanksgiving, which bears little or no resemblance to the Thanksgiving of my youth. Thus it helps that my sister is coming, she brings pumpkin pie and I bring cranberry. Our friends are coming too and bringing a squash dish. We five are truly the indians coming to enlighten the white people on the bounty of nature. Although I'm excited to eat a giant bird, with cornbread "dressing" and fluffy potatoes with gravy.

Anyway, we'll probably eat/drink for a few hours, then watch some family-fun cinema. Friday we will get up and head home and spend the rest of the weekend in a prone position, periodically napping.

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments What's this "make cranberry sauce" thing? I like the kind that pops out still in the shape of the can:)

Yes! The boys are old enough to run around on their own so going to the waterpark no matter means staying within three feet of them every second. So waterparks are much more fun than they used to be.:)

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments The waterpark sounds great, RA. It's so funny that you are going in November - I always think of waterparks as being a place to go in the heat of summer.
It must be all indoors, I'm hoping?

Last year my sister made the cranberry sauce by sliding the goo out onto a plate, still in the shape of the can. It did not amuse our mother at all.

I'm just going to cook a couple of bags of cranberries with an orange and some sugar. Its easy, fresher, and tangier than the can kind can be. :)

message 10: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (songgirl7) Cranberry-pear chutney
1 cup toasted, chopped walnuts
1 bag cranberries
2 lb. pears, peeled, quartered, cored, and diced
2 cups sugar
1 cup cider vinegar (I use 1/2 a cup with 1/2 a cup of water)
One 2-inch piece fresh ginger, peeled and grated
One cinnamon stick
1 clove
1/4 cup golden raisins

In a 4-quart saucepan, combine the cranberries, pears, sugar, vinegar, and ginger. Tie the cinnamon stick and clove together in a piece of cheesecloth and add to saucepan. Bring to a simmer over medium heat, then adjust the heat to maintain a simmer. Cook uncovered until the cranberries have collapsed and the pears are almost tender, 15 to 20 minutes.
Stir the raisings into the chutney and cook for 5 minutes. Remove from heat and stir in walnuts. When cool, remove cheesecloth bag. Refrigerate in a covered container.

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments Yes, all indoors, Jackie! Wisconsin in known for indoor waterparks. We take them for granted. But I've had other people from different parts of the country wonder if we're swimming outside in November, too:)

The kids are hyped. We have an "aquarium suite" with bunkbeds for the boys. But they're afraid they're going to fall off the bunkbeds so I'll probably sleep in one.

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments Has anyone ever made that Special Cranberry Relish recipe that Susan Stamberg gives out every year on NPR?
I swear, I've heard her talk about it at least a dozen times, and never even considered making it. Horseradish?!?

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments Oh, and have fun with your mom, Jacks...are you getting Chris a Spanish/English dictionary for Christmas?:)

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments The "Aquarium Suite" sounds cool, RA. But I thought boys loved bunkbeds!

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments are you getting Chris a Spanish/English dictionary for Christmas?:)

Yes! It's a holiday tradition. Chris insists we get him another dictionary EVERY YEAR! ;)

message 16: by Sally, la reina (new)

Sally (mrsnolte) | 17373 comments Mod
oh, word. Aquarium suite would hype me too! I imagine fish and sea urchins living in the tubes constructing the bunk beds.

Are all four of you in a room with two bunk beds? hee.

message 17: by RandomAnthony (new)

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments No, it's interesting, because there's five of us (two adults, three kids) we usually get a suite. Some hotels won't even let us get a normal room. The suite is a little more (two queen beds, two bunk beds) but it's worth it. And it's closer to the waterpark, so you don't freeze your ass off in the hallway:)

These trips are way easier and more fun now that the kids are a little older. The two oldest can sort of go on their own, really, and as long as the youngest is within eyesight, he's ok.

Here's the youngest (Nathaniel) at the same waterpark a couple years back, in case you've never seen an indoor waterpark. I was filming...if you turn up the volume you can hear my wife laughing at what happens in the first five seconds...

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments Hee! Was that you that he ran into, RA?

message 19: by RandomAnthony (new)

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments No! I was filming. I'm insulted!:)

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments Oops! Hey, I was only asking. I thought your wife was filming it, RA.

message 21: by RandomAnthony (new)

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments No...if my memory serves me well she was standing next to me, talking with my sister...

that dude weighs, like, 300 pounds!

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments Really?! Wow. He didn't look that big to me in the video...
I just thought he looked tall enough to be you. Yeah, that's it...

message 23: by RandomAnthony (new)

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments Keep tap dancin', librarian:)

message 24: by [deleted user] (new)

He didn't look that big to me, either. And we know how svelte and hard-bodied you are now, RA.

message 25: by Meen (new)

Meen (meendee) | 1733 comments I remember that video! Hilarious!

message 26: by RandomAnthony (new)

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments Oh, I posted that one here already? Shit. My bad.

message 27: by Meen (new)

Meen (meendee) | 1733 comments No, I think it was in MiniAm.

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments That sounds wonderful, Donald! Are you going to be looking for any particular books, or just browsing, in those bookstores?

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments That sounds ambitious, Donald. I hope you find something fascinating and readable!

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments That sounds good, too. I keep meaning to read Blankets by Craig Thompson, but never doing anything about it to make it happen.

Meen (meendee) | 1733 comments I loved used bookstores so much it makes me feel all warm inside just thinking about being in one.

A) RA, that video made me laugh out loud. I love how your son bounced off that guy (you) and he (you) barely moved an inch. oh, I'm sorry, I know it wasn't (is) you,but this is making me laugh to type.

B) Blankets is such a wonderful story. I read that last year around this time and just could not stop reading. I just found out from my friend that when we lived in Portland she was dating Craig Thompson. He had just published Goodbye Chunky Rice and was in the process of finishing Blankets. I wish I had known! I remember we played Scrabble one night, and he was really tall. That's it.

Sarah (songgirl7) Donald, please don't ever call it "Frisco" again.

message 34: by Meen (new)

Meen (meendee) | 1733 comments Wait, I thought there was a "Frisco" in CA. Oh no, that's "Fresno." Nevermind.

message 35: by Sally, la reina (new)

Sally (mrsnolte) | 17373 comments Mod
I was imagining "Frisco" Colorado, the little town between Copper and Breck where people have cabins and go to Safeway for groceries. Just at first, then I read the other 89% of the message.

message 36: by Meen (new)

Meen (meendee) | 1733 comments Sally, I'm wondering if you actually counted up the number of words you read and calculated what percentage of the whole post they were. ('Cause that's totally something I would do.)

message 37: by [deleted user] (new)

Frisco, CO. We come out there in the summer every year to a Condo That a lady rents to us dirt cheap because my wife helped her get a stain out of a piece of clothing at the laundry mat one time. I love Frisco, and would move there if it wasn't so blasted expensive.

I'm considering looking for teaching positions in mountain towns like Frisco, Steamboat or even Aspen. I hear that the schools are eager for teachers and offer all sorts of incentives and packages to get them to move there. I'd totally live in Frisco. I know after a while I might get bored and want a city, but for now it sounds nice.

No, Mindy, I didn't calculate the numbers. I'm pretty good at random guesses, however.

Sarah (songgirl7) Oh, well, Frisco, CO is different.

I hate when people call San Francisco "Frisco" though.

message 41: by Meen (new)

Meen (meendee) | 1733 comments Sally, I would think they have to offer lots of incentives. Isn't cost of living outrageous... especially in towns like Aspen?

message 42: by [deleted user] (new)

Well Sally if you get a job in Frisco let me know and I will buy you a drink next summer.

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments Wait...I watched the news this morning, and I haven't seen any film yet of people beating the shit out of each other in Black Friday lines. I thought that was an American tradition:)

Matt | 819 comments I saw a clip of two guys wrestling for a box on CBS, but it was not clear if it was from this year or if it was stock footage. Didn't get to stick around for the whole story...

Someone died at Wal-Mart from being trampled. This is disgusting. I don't understand! I can't get into the mindframe of someone who would be rushing Wal-Mart in a crowd of hundreds for bargains. I don't get it.

Dan Schwent (akagunslinger) About a thousand years ago while I was working security at K-Mart during my second college stint, I was unfortunate enough to have to work 5am to noon on Thanksgiving and the day after. Not fun. They ran out of the $40 dvd players that were the big deal that year in about thirty minutes. Plus I had to chase down a guy that tried to wheel a cart full of merch right out the front door.

message 48: by Matt (new)

Matt | 819 comments What the hell is wrong with people!?! I would rather pay a higher price for something than to have to deal with that mess.

I'll bet they had Black Friday sales in the waning days of Rome when there were no gladiator events or orgies scheduled.

Sorry, that was my inner grouchy old guy talking...
