I think many people, military personnel, police officers, etc. feel a sense of power when they are in uniform. A sense of importance that they may lack without it. It was his way of giving himself power, a boost of confidence maybe.
I agree that many "officials" do this for a sense of power, but in this case, I felt that he did it because in his country, in Iran, he was someone important. He had money and power, and he could give his children everything they needed. His wife was also proud of him and loved him more, and so I think he wanted to end his life with that sense of self, rather than the mess that his life became in the end.
Oh, I agree Amy! When I said power, I meant more in the way of how he felt rather than how he acted. (I think this isn't coming out of my head right either! lol) Move of a powerful feeling than a sense of power over someone like Lester had when he went to the house with his uniform on.
