The Replacement by Brenna Yovanoff.

This one is a book club read for school. My friend Tristan already read it and said it was "odd", but wouldn't tell me anything else, hahah. We'll see. (:

And on the other hand, I'm also starting POE!
Complete Tales & Poems by Edgar Allan Poe

message 103: by Dalynn (new)

Dalynn (dalynnrmc) Okay I think I might try and finish The School of the Seers A Practical Guide on How to See in the Unseen Realm by Jonathan Welton The School of the Seers: A Practical Guide on How to See in the Unseen Realm this weekend. THen I can start The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes Monday and probably finish easily before next weekend, and then I can start King Arthur and His Knights of the Round Table.

Sound like a plan? Maybe!

message 104: by Denise (new)

Denise (dulcinea3) | 307 comments I finished my Arthurian reads - read The Once and Future King, and threw in The Book of Merlyn as a bonus, as well as watching the movie musical Camelot and listening to the CD of Myths and Legends of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table (that title is a mouthful!) by Rick Wakeman.

So now I am on to reading some Dashiell Hammett for the B&N Mystery forum (we're discussing American classic mystery writers the last week of each month, and Hammett is up for March). I think I've had the ones I'm going to read at least a year or maybe two, so they are going to be added to my Dusty Book challenge as I start them. First up - The Continental Op, a volume of short stories featuring one of Hammett's regular sleuths, a private detective. I'm one story in, and enjoying it!

message 105: by Denise (new)

Denise (dulcinea3) | 307 comments I'm not done with The Continental Op yet, but I need an easy read for tomorrow when I have to take my mother to the hospital for an operation, so I am adding another dusty book - The Wit and Wisdom of Jane Austen. I've had this one about six years, and came across it the other day when adding books to my Goodreads shelves. Since I just read 101 Things You Didn't Know About Jane Austen last month (before the Austen theme month was suggested), and have already decided to read Minor Works next month, I figured I might as well read an Austen book a month for these few months! I normally don't read more than one book at a time, but I figure this won't take my mind off the Hammett too much.

message 107: by Alicia (new)

Alicia (soitgoes815) I'm having trouble deciding what I want to read next, maybe you guys can help me decide. The three options I'm considering are 'Invisible Man' by Ralph Ellison, 'Gravity's Rainbow' by Thomas Pynchon, or 'If on A Winter's Night a Traveler' by Italo Calvino. Which one should I go with and why?

Dalynn (dalynnrmc) I am SO BEHIND on my reading! I'm not getting a chance to sit and read, and when I do get the chance I'm too tired or there is housework to do, etc.

So what do I do? Borrow more books at the library, of course!

Mercy by Jodi Picoult (Been wanting to try this author for a good while now - how does she compare to Nora Roberts? I like Nora's style but it's too pagan for me, with too much steam and romance.)

and The Book Thief by Markus Zusak erm... thanks, GoodReads. ;)

I think all junior classes read the same thing, right? I mean, as long as it's the Honors American Literature class. (: But I'm hoping to do another novel this year! Poems and short stories are nice, but I want something to really devour!

Jessica, SO right! The movie was great! I went to the midnight showing. (: The only thing I disliked was the really quick/chopped up ending. They left a lot out that was in the book at the very end, which I didn't enjoy quite as much!

So, I'm going to start the Preface to Paradise Lost by C.S. Lewis soon! Maybe even tomorrow. And then I'm going to read Paradise Lost! Both are dusty books and I'm so glad that April has gotten me to read them. Without my commitment to her I would probably just procrastinate reading them some more :) I might even break my rule of only reading one book at a time since it's epic poetry and I have a feeling it's going to make me sleepy....

Excited for you Jessica! Paradise Lost has been on my TBR list since college. I haven't gotten around to tackling it yet. I am not much for poetry so that may have something to do with it. Look forward to see how you feel about it.

I've no idea i'm afraid Nicole (not even sure if we get oprah here). What I can tell you though is it's very very good. It's tough going as very intense sense of foreboding. I've found it quite upsetting but fantastic.

I'm currently reading The German Bride,by Joanna Hershon. The German Bride A Novel by Joanna Hershon

So far,I'm excited by this book!
(I gave up on another that was plodding and difficult to read because there was very little punctuation. I got bored.)
The story takes place in 1868. So far,I like the young woman who is telling the story. She and her sister have been having their portraits painted by a mysterious painter. One year later, other developments have taken place.
I like that this is humorous, romantic and a bit suspenseful. I would recommend this book to all. The German Bride A Novel by Joanna Hershon
