Katie VanderPoel | 3 comments I could go on and on about how terrible of a character Bella is. First she is sniveling, Whiney helpless and is always the damsel in distress. Also going into a cationic state when your boyfriend leaves is not romantic, it is behaivor that should land a person in the psych ward. All in all she is a terrible role model for young girls as her character gives the message that your life is nothing if you don't have a man, which is an incredibly horrible message.

cali 𖡼.𖤣𖥧𖡼.𖤣𖥧 (calsreadingcorner) I loved Bella :) I thought she was relatable and selfless, and was very self-aware. I know she's melodramatic and doesn't always think of the consequences, but that fits my own personality type, so there's bound to be other teen girls who relate too!

She may not be a role model for all, but she was for me :) I thoroughly enjoyed her as a character; from her curiosity, to dealing with depression and eating disorders. She isn't the healthiest character for teens to model after, but she's a realistic and relatable one to many who do also suffer.

Plus, I think she's pretty mature in every situation, except maybe when she was like "lol bye dad I'm 18 I'm gonna go to Italy for a sec brb" (but that's justified in the realm of paranormal fantasy– there was a life or death situation occurring!).

I find many reasons for hate to Bella is more against generic teens, in fiction and in real life. Which is a whole other subject– which I won't delve into.

People talk about Twilight only caring about romance (and a superficial one at that), but they don't consider the context. It's a romance novel. The focus is going to be romance. Is this then a suggestion that all romance plots are vapid? Are all romance characters symbolic of negative choices and impacts in life?

But she doesn't "drop everything for her man". She has other passions; i.e. books, friendship (Alice and Jacob), her parents, FAMILY (The Cullens AND her own child), the list could go on. Sure, she doesn't want to find a cure for cancer or anything like that– but how many deeply inspired characters will you find in novels? The only ones I come across in YA are the atypical dystopian/fantasy female, rising against her corrupt government. And guess what? It gets boring. Are we like this in real life? Maybe the rest of you guys are, but I'm certainly not. I'm far more into the "generic" things such as books, family and friends.

The whole reason she was depressed in New Moon wasn't simply because her boyfriend was gone. She no longer had access to this super- natural world that she only just discovered. She no longer wanted a mundane and simple life.

Bella was brave and innovative. She constantly sacrificed herself for those she loved, even when they didn't like her back (see Rosalie).

People hate because they want to hate. But maybe they should look into other female protags, not just Bella. Because it seems these negative attributes are amongst many budding-women, in fiction and in life.

Tracy | 11 comments I never understood the hype over the Twilight series. I read the books to keep my then-tween daughter company, but I didn't care for Bella in any of the stories, and when, in I believe it was the second volume, the chapters were simply one word: the name of the month--I distinctly remember throwing the book in the air in disgust.

Bella was no one to look up to or aspire to be, imo. When one of my nieces wrote her own story about a girl who learned she was a shape shifter, she asked me to read it. The poor character was modeled too closely after Bella--she spent most of her time with tears oozing out of her eyes waiting for her boyfriend to fly in her window and hold her and comfort her. I explained to her that in our family of strong women, we don't need men to save us--and neither should the characters we create for our stories. Thankfully, both girls outgrew their interest in that series. Not a moment too soon!

message 56: by Suzi!!! (new)

Suzi!!! (suzievelyn) Bella's overdramatic, whiny, and makes bad decisions. In other words, she has the same flaws that basically every teenager has. I've only read the first book and am currently reading the second so my opinion might change, but Bella makes up for these flaws with some of her actions. I'm not saying she's the perfect character because she isn't, but I, in no way, hate her like many people do. She's a realistic portrayal of many 17/18 year old girls who makes several mistakes and who I fully believe will look back at herself with the passage of time one day and realize how bad some of her decisions were. I don't agree with some of what she thinks and honestly wish someone could point out to her what she can't, but I wouldn't call that hate. There's something about Bella that, whenever she makes a bad choice, makes me want to help her instead of, like I feel with some characters, just watching and rolling my eyes.

I agree, but she was only likable when Edward was gone and she was able to think for herself and not think only for what would please Edward. I guess that does beg the question, was Jacob the better match for her and her depression was simply the result of a horrible breakup, or was she really meant to be with Edward and she was literally unable to function without him? The latter sounds extremely unhealthy and obsessive to me but who knows?

I wonder if your question depends on the world Meyer created—if vampires and werewolves exist, then Bella was probably fated to be with Edward. At times it seems like Meyer wants vampires to be like they traditionally are in literature: alluring and intoxicating and manipulative. We tend to give agency to Bella, saying she is the one obsessed with Edward. I think this is because at other times, Meyer makes it seem like Bella is a real-world high school teenager, unswayed by the magic that comes with vampires. What if Bella isn't obsessed, but bewitched or entranced?

message 60: by [deleted user] (new)

I really don't like her.She is kind of predictable and according to me she was too quick on falling head over heels for Edward.Sometimes she is very firm but not heroic obviously.

That is a very interesting way of looking at it. It COULD be that most of the critics, and even those who like the series, are looking at it as though Edward is more human than he truly is in that reality. The only thing is though, that Meyers never mentioned that vampires had the ability to manipulate peoples emotions in that way, but there are hidden meanings and facts in every book.

message 65: by Katlyn (new)

Katlyn Bolingbroke (katlynbolingbroke) I think bella swan was a great character. I can relate to her being new in a town where everyone knows everyone and you yourself don't know what to think or do. She is also bookworm like myself. I can't wait till the fifth installment of the twilight books comes out next month to see how she is perceived from Edwards point of view.

message 66: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Alexander (lady__ren) Bella was annoying most of the series, but at the same time, I think she just annoyed me because of how human she truly was. I felt like she was a very realistic character in how she handled a lot of things. Also, something I liked about her too is that she didn't really change her morals, she stood her ground for the things she believed in even if they were stupid. She isn't very heroic, I agree with that, but not every character has to be a hero. This is a paranormal series, and it was really comforting to see Bella be so extremely human in a world full of unimaginable stuff. Her humanity was comforting, even if it was annoying too.

message 67: by carli :) (new)

carli :) (carlireadsss) | 14 comments Um, Bella Swan is a very bland character. I haven't read the books so I hope my opinion is still valid. But I feel like her character development from what I have seen is extremely boring and is all about her latching on to toxicity and becoming emotionally attached to someone who literally left her because she was human. She made a choice for herself and he denied her. Then she proceeded to lead another man on, allowing him to catch feelings for her and then tell him he isn't what she wants anymore and that her previous love interest is the love of her life (and then they get married at 18). The whole adaptation of Bella Swan and Edward Cullen is just 'blah' and the writing doesn't make it any better. However, on a side note, I still watch these movies because it gives me nostalgia and the love story (without looking at the PC ideas now burned into our brains) is wonderful and makes me blush and wish for something similar every time. I don't know, maybe I will have a different opinion after I read the books, even though I have no want to read them.

I agree with Caron! Bella's an introvert, but the force is strong with her, or is it her Chi? Either way, she rocks.

message 76: by [deleted user] (new)

Bella is emotionally strong and follows wherever her heart leads to. She never regrets and is brave enough to negotiate with Edward. I like her in some way. K. Stewart totally blows up the character.

message 77: by Janssen (last edited Feb 25, 2022 05:25AM) (new)

Janssen I think Bella is one of the most annoying characters in Twilight. She can't do anything for herself; she always needs Edward to come to her rescue whenever she's in a dangerous situation. I do really like to book though no thanks to Bella.

ripfranzkafka I enjoyed twilight but couldn't recall the protagonists name afterwards
I mean she's a luck girl

T ✩ Handmaiden Of Amidala (tarria) does she even count as a 'heroine'? Damsel in Distress is a better term for her tbh.

Lydia | 36 comments I just want to know one thing; Why do all these characters care so much and why are they all do emotional. For real, give me an insensitive jerk once in a while (Someone sarcastic, funny, practical rather than rushing in to save someone. Idk if this is directed at Bella, but it is at other MCs. Like... this may be an unpopular opinion, but give me someone I relate to, not a whiny, I-have-to-save-literally-everyone kind of person lol)

message 81: by Lydia (new)

Maya Freeman Erika wrote: "What did you think of Bella?"

Genuinely hated her character. I have been saying to my friends for years that it is my biggest pet peeve in supernatural shows or books when they pick a boring (always brunette) girl who has absolutely no personality of her own and then sandwich her between two supernatural creatures as if picking one of them is gonna give her a personality. I wish Bella's character development had been something that was actually given some thought because she had so much potential to be great. I can appreciate that she is young and stupid or whatever but like do i desperately wish she had told both Edward and Jake to go kick rocks at some point? yes! She was also kind of manipulative (scene at end of new moon where she forces everyone to vote). She was constantly allowing everyone else to do her dirty work without any thought as to how she can help (in any meaningful way).

I am kind of upset that I do feel this way about Bella only because this was the first YA series I had ever read. It wasn't until I started reading the Cruel Prince series that I realized that the MC could actually be strong and have a personality.

message 85: by Mariah (new)

Mariah | 68 comments I thought Bella was kind of annoying, she acts pretty ridiculous sometimes and she leads Jacob on (even if she doesn't mean to, she did). I hate the fact that turns into one of those girls that can't function without her boyfriend.

Ella✨(booktrovert) | 152 comments I'm currently reading Eclipse for the first time and I've got to say I kind of dislike Bella. She is a horrible role model. Honestly, I don't mind her as a person but she has no individuality, confidence, smarts, and she isn't great at realizing what is a healthy relationship and what isn't. Meyers could have done a lot better with her. I don't think it's all her fault though.
