She may not be a role model for all, but she was for me :) I thoroughly enjoyed her as a character; from her curiosity, to dealing with depression and eating disorders. She isn't the healthiest character for teens to model after, but she's a realistic and relatable one to many who do also suffer.
Plus, I think she's pretty mature in every situation, except maybe when she was like "lol bye dad I'm 18 I'm gonna go to Italy for a sec brb"
I find many reasons for hate to Bella is more against generic teens, in fiction and in real life. Which is a whole other subject– which I won't delve into.
People talk about Twilight only caring about romance (and a superficial one at that), but they don't consider the context. It's a romance novel. The focus is going to be romance. Is this then a suggestion that all romance plots are vapid? Are all romance characters symbolic of negative choices and impacts in life?
But she doesn't "drop everything for her man". She has other passions; i.e. books, friendship (Alice and Jacob), her parents, FAMILY (The Cullens AND her own child), the list could go on. Sure, she doesn't want to find a cure for cancer or anything like that– but how many deeply inspired characters will you find in novels? The only ones I come across in YA are the atypical dystopian/fantasy female, rising against her corrupt government. And guess what? It gets boring. Are we like this in real life? Maybe the rest of you guys are, but I'm certainly not. I'm far more into the "generic" things such as books, family and friends.
The whole reason she was depressed in New Moon wasn't simply because her boyfriend was gone. She no longer had access to this super- natural world that she only just discovered. She no longer wanted a mundane and simple life.
Bella was brave and innovative. She constantly sacrificed herself for those she loved, even when they didn't like her back (see Rosalie).
People hate because they want to hate. But maybe they should look into other female protags, not just Bella. Because it seems these negative attributes are amongst many budding-women, in fiction and in life.

Bella was no one to look up to or aspire to be, imo. When one of my nieces wrote her own story about a girl who learned she was a shape shifter, she asked me to read it. The poor character was modeled too closely after Bella--she spent most of her time with tears oozing out of her eyes waiting for her boyfriend to fly in her window and hold her and comfort her. I explained to her that in our family of strong women, we don't need men to save us--and neither should the characters we create for our stories. Thankfully, both girls outgrew their interest in that series. Not a moment too soon!

lol preach

I agree, but she was only likable when Edward was gone and she was able to think for herself and not think only for what would please Edward. I guess that does beg the question, was Jacob the better match for her and her depression was simply the result of a horrible breakup, or was she really meant to be with Edward and she was literally unable to function without him? The latter sounds extremely unhealthy and obsessive to me but who knows?

I wonder if your question depends on the world Meyer created—if vampires and werewolves exist, then Bella was probably fated to be with Edward. At times it seems like Meyer wants vampires to be like they traditionally are in literature: alluring and intoxicating and manipulative. We tend to give agency to Bella, saying she is the one obsessed with Edward. I think this is because at other times, Meyer makes it seem like Bella is a real-world high school teenager, unswayed by the magic that comes with vampires. What if Bella isn't obsessed, but bewitched or entranced?
I really don't like her.She is kind of predictable and according to me she was too quick on falling head over heels for Edward.Sometimes she is very firm but not heroic obviously.

That is a very interesting way of looking at it. It COULD be that most of the critics, and even those who like the series, are looking at it as though Edward is more human than he truly is in that reality. The only thing is though, that Meyers never mentioned that vampires had the ability to manipulate peoples emotions in that way, but there are hidden meanings and facts in every book.

Pathokinesis is Jasper Hale's ability to sense and change the emotions of the those around him.

But I am not ashamed to say that I really love Twilight and Bella. This story is just so close to my heart. And I m not going to marry if they don't play A Thousand Years song from Twilight movie at wedding. LOL

I agree with Caron! Bella's an introvert, but the force is strong with her, or is it her Chi? Either way, she rocks.
Bella is emotionally strong and follows wherever her heart leads to. She never regrets and is brave enough to negotiate with Edward. I like her in some way. K. Stewart totally blows up the character.

Hahahaha I love making fun of some of my favorite books. It's just better than swooning over them. Lol

Genuinely hated her character. I have been saying to my friends for years that it is my biggest pet peeve in supernatural shows or books when they pick a boring (always brunette) girl who has absolutely no personality of her own and then sandwich her between two supernatural creatures as if picking one of them is gonna give her a personality. I wish Bella's character development had been something that was actually given some thought because she had so much potential to be great. I can appreciate that she is young and stupid or whatever but like do i desperately wish she had told both Edward and Jake to go kick rocks at some point? yes! She was also kind of manipulative (scene at end of new moon where she forces everyone to vote). She was constantly allowing everyone else to do her dirty work without any thought as to how she can help (in any meaningful way).
I am kind of upset that I do feel this way about Bella only because this was the first YA series I had ever read. It wasn't until I started reading the Cruel Prince series that I realized that the MC could actually be strong and have a personality.
