What's the Name of That Book??? discussion

The book was by a Brit author, set in England.

England had been repeatedly bombed by both European countries and the U.S, it was never explained why. Due to this the infrastructure had broken down and people were forced to live a more simple life, gangs were rife in London, where the main characters wife/girlfriend ran off too, he followed her only to realise he was better off at home.
