On the Southern Literary Trail discussion

Where our story begins...Daniel H. Holmes founded his first store in New Orleans in 1849. Ignatius is waiting for his mother Irene in front of this Canal Street location at the beginning of the novel. This photograph shows the department store decorated for Mardi Gras in 1906. The building now houses the Chateau Bourbon Hotel.

My first "real" job was selling shoes at the D.H. Holmes in Gretna after school my senior year in high school. It was a great store!
