Tom A book I just read called Mr Penumbra's 24 Hour Bookstore by Robin Sloan. It is pretty much Ready Player One set in the world of books. Highly Recomended for RP1 fans. It's just a fun mystery and it's a lot of more exciting than it sounds - the cover and advertising don't really communicate how fun it is, it has a lot of offbeat computer based stuff. For example, the main character stumbles on one mystery by making a 3D model of his store for the website and realises that the points customers buy books from draw the face of the mysterious figure he is searching for.

Tom, thanks! It sounds awesome and I'm going to go purchase it now. Thanks again.

Smilla's Sister I'd also recommend the Russian books - the Play to Live series AlterWorld, Mahanenko's Survival Quest Survival Quest and the upcoming first book of Livadny's Phantom Server seriesEdge of Reality. Russian authors seem to be all the rage in this genre at the moment.

Those are new to me. I'll check 'em out. Thanks!

Smilla's Sister You're very welcome, David.

Tom how about this "Crunk Brothers" thing? (novel based on Mario)

message 157: by Adrian (new) - rated it 5 stars

Adrian was a fun book indeed, year 0

message 158: by Scott (new) - rated it 5 stars

Scott Herdliska Give A Wizard of Eathsea a try

message 159: by Scott (new) - rated it 5 stars

Scott Herdliska I also dug The Stars My Destination by Alfred Bester, but Snow Crash is the most accurate approximation. I really liked Ready Player One, but I think Snow Crash is a better book.

message 160: by Scott (new) - rated it 5 stars

Scott Herdliska Also, John Dies at the End

message 161: by Adrian (new) - rated it 5 stars

Adrian The Stars My Destination was ... one of best si fi ever.

But not similar as read player 1 :)

Will try the other 2, I saw the movie John dies @ the end was pleasantly suprised.

Raymond Lee Haven't finish the book yet but I loved it. Can't wait for, armada which is the second book, but nothing to do with ready player one on what I read so far, to come out. I recommend it.

Matthew Biggs The Play To Live series by D. Rus is pretty good. A series base on being trapped in an MMO. Of the highest quality? Nope. Incredibly addicting? I bought and read all four books in a four day period. I almost skipped work.

message 164: by Adrian (new) - rated it 5 stars

Adrian somebody already mention it ;)

guys armada (https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1...) was launched yesterday, got it on my kindle will start on it afetr I finish Flesh & Bone (not so bad this rot & Ruin series :) )

Brendon Just finished Armada and I really enjoyed it. It's getting an average of 3/5 stars on Amazon, and I'm guessing because the reviewers had too many expectations for it after the awesomeness of Ready Player One. I think it's unfair to really compare the points that Armada isn't like RPO and detract from its score from that standpoint, but that's just me. It's more Ernest Cline. He's fun!

message 166: by Amy (new) - rated it 5 stars

Amy Thanks, Brendon! Was curious as to how people are finding it. I'm gonna try and hold off until it goes down a bit in price on the Kindle but I'll definitely be reading it!

message 167: by Adrian (new) - rated it 5 stars

Adrian George RR Martin said he read an advance review copy of the new book from the “Ready Player One” author. “Armada” is yet another novel inspired by classic video games, and Martin says that fans of “The Last Starfighter” will find lots to enjoy in it. Still, Martin would like Cline to try something beyond the realm of videogames. “He’s a talented guy, and I am sure that anything he writes would be terrific.”

Jessica Gleason I'm reading Ready Player One now. Late, I know. But I recently read NPCs, and Off to be The Wizard, both great game books. I also read Critical Failures. They're all nerdy.

message 169: by David (new) - rated it 3 stars

David C. Cool. I'll investigate those 3!

message 170: by Magnus (new) - rated it 5 stars

Magnus Ender's game is a good movie heard it was a good book as well

Papaphilly Parzival wrote: "Ender's game is a good movie heard it was a good book as well"

Much better book than movie.

message 172: by Adrian (new) - rated it 5 stars

Adrian the movie is a lot less than the books

Taarshi The book is awesome if you like going on a philosophical journey and makes you question your existence as well as the difference from adult to child through the centuries, as the plot mainly centers around a boy of 6 up until he is 13 or so who has the brain capacity of great leaders. The book has been criticized A LOT so it's either you really like it or you out right hate it

message 174: by Andrew (new) - rated it 5 stars

Andrew Did you like Armada? I really wanted to like it, but so far I've been disappointed. It has elements of Ready Player One, but it just doesn't grip the same.

message 175: by Adrian (new) - rated it 5 stars

Adrian I didn't like Armada, of course wanted 2 and was excited but is like was written in a rush and for YA audience or less :(

message 176: by Joseph (new) - rated it 5 stars

Joseph Cognard I have found no books similar to ready player one

message 177: by Kay (new) - rated it 5 stars

Kay 'The Feedback Loop' series by Harmon Cooper is very entertaining.

message 178: by Adrian (new) - rated it 5 stars

Adrian 10x

will check it out ;)

But thanks! :)

message 181: by C.E. (new) - rated it 5 stars

C.E. Crowder "Press Start to Play", SF anthology by several authors, edited by Daniel H. Wilson, with introduction by Ernest Cline. Someone's probably mentioned it?

message 182: by Kris (last edited Apr 26, 2016 01:42PM) (new)

Kris Kettering Anyone in this thread care to comment on the Mortality Doctrine series by Dashner? Similar, in genre if not style? I'm thinking of doing a "If You Like ____, Then Try ____" display in the library where I work and was wanting to reference RPO. Thanks for your help and input, I haven't had a chance to read RPO or the Dashner series (yet).

message 183: by Becky (new) - rated it 5 stars

Becky Dream Park and its sequels ring a lot of the same bells for me. I also recommend Omnitopia: Dawn. It's about a game very similar to Oasis, but it's set in a world that's a lot less depressing.

message 184: by David (new) - rated it 5 stars

David RC Obviously this thread is a bit old now but I'd like to add the Magic 2.0 series. First book is called Off to be Wizard. I read it before Ready Player One and loved it. Its much more comedy than RPO but its a similar theme (the real world is not real, its a giant computer simulation that the main charater learns to control like a video game)

message 185: by Adrian (new) - rated it 5 stars

Adrian somebody already suggested :) but 10x!!

Shanna_redwind I recently read one called This is Not a Game.

It's not hugely similar, except that it explores how a game on the internet could affect events in the real world.

BarkingUpTrees.Com I finished reading this a couple of weeks ago and absolutely loved everything about it. It is now my favorite book of all time. Very interested to find out similar books. Liking a lot of the suggestions so far. Here is my Ready Player One book review

message 188: by Nick (new) - rated it 5 stars

Nick Armada was pretty good.... Also by Ernest Cline

The dagger of Death is a good short adventure!

Neal Stephenson Seveneves is good, it can get a bit long winded.

message 189: by Rita (new) - rated it 5 stars

Rita Costa (Lusitania Geek) Does anyone know any good free ebook (Kindle version) or gives out their free ebook in exchange an honest review similar to Ready Player One by Ernest Cline ?! Up to it :) Cheers Rita x

Papaphilly There is a group Apocalypse Whenever that has giveaways every month. The group is dystopia/ apocalyptic in nature and may not be perfect, but there is lots of ebooks.

Try reading VEG. It is a quick read. I read it in a day but got hooked after the fourth chapter. It's the only book I've read similar to VEG with games and adventure. It's free on Smashwords until after Christmas.

message 195: by Adrian (new) - rated it 5 stars

Adrian Thanks Jared, but all these books were mentioned in the thread :)

Mitchell Bushong I haven't read Awaken Online: Catharsis yet, it's on my list, but it takes place in a virtually immersive video game as well. I think it's worth looking into.

message 197: by Jacob (new) - rated it 5 stars

Jacob Paniagua I don't know if this has already been said but, Michael Grant's The Eye of Minds is really similar. Great book.

message 198: by Adrian (new) - rated it 5 stars

Adrian Hmm, not the first one from a series by James Dashner?

Mojoreb Don't knoW if it has been said but We Are Legion (We Are Bob) is a book like this. It has numerous sci fi references throughout the book. Although it is an audiobook, so I don't knoW if people Would like that.
