Silly question I'm sure but I would like some clarification and advice if you can offer some. I published on Amazon kindle earlier this year and received one of their automatic Asin numbers (B0075OZWSE) I would now like to publish with Smashwords as well but they are saying I need an isbn number that they can offer free ... Does one number conflict with the other? How does this work? I'm sure most indies will be on both Amazon and Smashwords no? Thanks in advance for any advice given.
I've used both the free one and my own from my block of ten. There's no difference. Use the free one, and then let them distribute it to all of the outlets they offer (opt out of Amazon). It still belongs totally to you, except you can't reuse that ISBN if you pull it off and place it yourself.
