Nik's List by K.C. Steward

Nik is a freshman and track star with her own “to-do” list. Nik adjusts her list when she sees Todd the first day at her new school. Kissing him is first on her list. But Nik faces two problems: Todd’s scheming girlfriend, and the fact that Nik has never kissed a boy. How do you fix a problem like that? Easily. Nik befriends Rusty to use for practice. Nothing could go wrong, right?

Brian Foster (bwfoster78) | 191 comments As someone who plans to self publish, I think I've got a handle on line editing and writing. What I need is someone who is qualified to tell me: is it good enough to publish or am I delusional?

What will this type of manuscript review cost?

I'm not going to be finished until late April at the earliest, but I want to get some budget numbers.

Thanks.

Brian

That's a loaded question, Brian. A lover of romance might read a mystery and say it isn't publishable and vice versa. Some of it comes down to taste.

Are you talking about the nuts and bolts? Is your plot working, does the prose flow, is the dialog believable? I can tell you if those work.

Do you know your genre? Do you know your audience? I read a story the writer said was Young Adult but the protagonist was pushing 30. That's not going to work.

A story has many components. Are you worried about your storytelling skills (which can be learned)? Or whether your story is interesting?

My business is brand new, so I am open to negotiating a fee. My link is at message 63.

Best of luck and keep writing!

Justin Wilkerson | 25 comments I know most indie authors say this, but I don't have the money to pay for any sort of professional editor. However, I do want some extra eyes to look over my 2nd book before I publish it.

I've proofread it twice myself, but I learned from my 1st book how many things I miss, even after reading it roughly 6 times.

What I would like is 2-3 people willing to just highlight and mark-up a pdf of my 2nd book and send it back to me. Anyone willing to do this for me would have my thanks. You could even just do part of the book if you want. Anything anyone would be willing to go over would be appreciated.

What editing am I looking for? Grammar, punctuation, general proofreading. Making sure I have the right words. Anyone who wants to comment on the flow and continuity on the story as well is more than welcome.

If someone does edit the whole thing and would like to, I'd be willing to add their names as editor when I publish to Amazon and B&N.

I hope this request isn't seen as a scoff on the professionals in this thread, I simply have no money to spare. I'm dealing with moving in January and starting Graduate school.

Anyways, thanks in advance to anyone willing to spend their freetime reading/editing my work. If you're interested in doing me this favor go ahead and shoot me a message.

Alice Sabo (alice_sabo) Justin, what is your genre? Can you give me a 2 sentence blurb? If it's in my range I might consider a barter.

message 62: by Justin (new)

Justin Wilkerson | 25 comments lol, sorry, guess I should have given some actual information about the book. Its science fiction/fantasy.

"Fury" book 2 of The Ghost Wars Saga:

With the aid of the Great Dragon, Destor Rudir has returned to seek vengeance on his brother, Cuzak. King Cuzak, ruler of the Kingdom of Specter on Earth, must once again fight for the survival of his people against his corrupt and traitorous brother.

Hope that helps, its my first attempt at a blurb for this book.

message 63: by Alice (new)

Alice Sabo (alice_sabo) Sorry, not my forte. Are you a member of the group Indie Books? I think I remember a thread for beta readers. And I know there are some people over there that would love this type of book.

Aria Grace (ariagrace) | 5 comments I'd like to recommend my editor, Kris Kendall, from Final-edits.com. She has been great at finding inconsistencies with my characters and timelines as well as having an eagle eye for missing words and typos. Her rates are quite low compared to other companies I've talked to and I've been really happy with her work.

Marius Hancu | 8 comments I am a published literary novelist and a professional editor.

First things first. My reference grammars are Quirk et al, A Comprehensive Grammar of the English Language, and George Curme's.

You may want to have a look at my novels:
Our Lives as Kites
and
Simon and Hiroko
(use the "Look Inside" feature)

From a Big-6 editor (London based), on "Our Lives as Kites," one of my literary novels:
—-
The writing is assured & distinctive, and you clearly know your protagonist inside out.
...
A stylistic point: your sentences are very elegantly crafted for the most part
...
I think this is a well-written, very intelligent novel which really evokes the world of ballet in a very powerful way.
—-

With solid English grammar and style skills, and as a result of understanding writing from inside out, I became a top critic at the critiquecircle.com creative writing site, with:
336 critiques
1844 forum messages
(see Gleng, that's me)

message 75: by Max (new)

Max (maxipoo1024) I've been a freelance editor for several of the Big Six, but recently I started my own an editing company focusing on indie authors. Just like many authors have become frustrated with the politics within the publishing industry, many editors feel the same way. Gone are the days of Maxwell Perkins. Publishers no longer assign an editor to a book who will work closely with an author to refine and revise their work. If a writer needs a little direction and some help to make an okay story into a great novel, they won’t get it unless they work with a smaller independent publisher that has an editorial staff or hire their own editor. I thrive on the hands on interaction with my authors and that's one of the reasons why I wanted to branch out on my own.

I've worked with several indie authors that have made it to Amazon's Top 100 List as well as The New York Times Best Seller List.

I have a keen eye for detail and I pretty much live, breath, and dream grammar. A pathetic existence, I know.

I have a BFA in Creative Writing from Yale University and a MA in Writing and Publishing from Emerson College.

If you're interested, please visit my website. www.polished-pen.com
I come with over eight years of experience and offer reasonable prices.

Timothy (timothyniedermann) | 36 comments I am a freelance writer and editor with over 25 years of experience, including stints teaching writing at Yale and McGill universities. What I prefer to do is guide an author through all stages of developing their book. This is structural editing primarily. I also prefer to work on a project basis; it's cheaper for the client. Copyediting and proofreading are part of the package (though a final review by a professional proofreader is always a good idea). As an editor and writer, I have dealt with most genres, from biography to romance to thrillers to paranormal fiction, even cookbooks. Please feel free to contact me through Goodreads.

Christine Rice (christine_rice) | 32 comments I provide an editing/proofreading service for novels and nonfiction books. I edit everything except erotica. I do very detailed and thorough editing, and proofreading is included in my editing service.

When I edit and proofread, I improve grammar and sentence structure; I fix spelling mistakes and other typos; and I check for clarity, conciseness, and strength of the writing and story. When I am done editing and proofreading a book, it is polished and strong.

I strive to maintain the author's voice, and I only make corrections that are necessary for correctness in the English language and for book writing, because each author has a unique style that should be preserved. And I do more than make corrections: I post comments on the manuscript and provide feedback to the author.

The cost of my combined editing and proofreading service is $1.00 per 250 words. You may find out more about my credentials and my experience here: www.christinericepublishingservices.com.

Heather has the training, skill, patience, and commitment to go beyond the call of duty when it comes to getting a manuscript to shine to its best luster, improving the author's voice as well as the mechanics, structure, and character development.
Heather proved absolutely invaluable when it came to editing My Two Flags, guiding me through the emotional maelstroms that affected my objectivity. I'm a much better writer thanks to her critiques, her encouragement, her attention to detail, and her involvement in making a good script a memorable one.
Heather is the real deal. She's worth her fees in every way.
