Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) New topic because the old one was starting to bog down.

What are you reading now? What have you just finished reading? Tell us about it!

Marcella (marcella6) | 886 comments I just finished reading Unlawful Contact (I-Team, #3) by Pamela Clare , which was so good. The first one was a rough start but the last two were really good.

Now I am reading Naked Edge (I-Team, #4) by Pamela Clare . I haven't gotten that deep into yet to make a judgement call.

So far I am pleasantly surprised with this series.

message 3: by D.G. (last edited Mar 19, 2012 04:38AM) (new)

D.G. Unlawful Contact was my favorite of that series.

I've been looking for an audiobook to start for the Bingo Shelf (magic) and I don't know what to start! I tried Finnikin of the Rock but didn't care for the narrator so I'm switching to ebook.

Then I tried White Cat and I really didn't care for this narrator either. His voice is sort of whiny but neither of my libraries have it in ebook! (What an outrage, LOL!) I think I'll have to stick to audio to this one.

message 4: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) Great idea, I have been wanting to suggest starting a new one for awhile. :) Was the old one archived?

So I am listening to Paradise Valley (Virgin River, #7) by Robyn Carr Kitty and the Midnight Hour (Kitty Norville, #1) by Carrie Vaughn and reading Born to Darkness by Suzanne Brockmann

#1 was just okay for me in the I-Team series. #2 was better. I have never gone on from there.

Yeah that narrator is not good.

Did you see my list in the discussion thread of my choices? I had quite a few I narrowed it down to. Maybe there is something there for you.

message 6: by D.G. (new)

D.G. I'll go and take a look. :)

message 7: by D.G. (new)

D.G. Oh man! You have Chalion in that list - sigh...I love that narration. The other day I finished a really bad book just because he was the narrator...worse, I had to listen to every word (it wasn't a long book though.)

I'm supposed to do a buddy read of The Thief with somebody but we haven't agreed on when to start. So I may pick that one if I cannot find anything in audio.

message 8: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) i started reading Out Of Her League and Mind Fuck last night - both are for 2 pick it for me challenges. In the car I am listening to Sizzle and Burn (there is some seriously cheesy dialogue in there) and at work i'm listening to There's a (Slight) Chance I Might Be Going to Hell: A Novel of Sewer Pipes, Pageant Queens, and Big Trouble

message 9: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) Leea, you put up an update on the other currently reading thread -- and I think the thread is deleted? -- anyway, I didn't read it - can you update again? :)

I am surprised that I am enjoying Kitty and the Midnight Hour (Kitty Norville, #1) by Carrie Vaughn I am only in the beginning, but so far it is decent. The narration is good too.

message 10: by D.G. (new)

D.G. I started listening to a gazillion fantasy/pnr/uf books which were in the magic shelf and at the end settled on Sabriel (Abhorsen, #1) by Garth Nix . Is it me, or does she look like a guy?

message 11: by Kay (new)

Kay (calikay) | 1216 comments Happy Monday, everyone! Well, over the weekend I finished Wicked Intentions (Maiden Lane, #1) by Elizabeth Hoyt which was just okay for me but very, very sensual. I also finished Damaged Goods by Lauren Gallagher which I loved! Thanks, Stacia for recommending it. And last night I finished Spell Bound (Hex Hall, #3) by Rachel Hawkins which was good. I wish I read all 3 books back to back b/c I forgot a lot from the previous books and I couldn't find the wiki page for it =(

Searching for my next read now and I don't like it when I don't know what I'm in the mood for.

message 12: by Stacia (the 2010 club) (last edited Mar 19, 2012 01:34PM) (new)

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) Glad you liked Damaged Goods. :) That one's going to be a re-read for sure at some point.

I was the same way with Hex Hall. I got stuck at the 25% mark, having the same issue with not really remembering what was going on. I ended up putting it down so I could finish the other books I'm on first, then I'll go back to it.

D.G. I thought it was a guy too and I've looked at that cover many times.

It's too bad you didn't like the audio for White Cat. I haven't listened to it but I'd heard it was a good audio. Guess not every narrator works for everyone. I like the book though but I read it in print.

message 13: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) Yup, looks like a dude!

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) Haha @ a dude.

Marc Hunter was super hot. He can take me hostage any day.

message 16: by Ottilie (new)

Ottilie (ottilie_weber) | 438 comments Hoping to start reading Catching Fire (The Hunger Games, #2) by Suzanne Collins Amazon just needs to deliver it!!

message 17: by Leea (new)

Leea Okay, I didn't see this new thread... We did have over 10,000 posts in the other one. haha!

I finished Cry Wolf (Alpha & Omega, #1) by Patricia Briggs earlier and I loved it! It's funny because this is the same world as Mercy but this series is just different. Bran and Leah, those two are a strange combination. I do plan on reading the next one but i've read so man UF and I don't want to get burnt out.

I'm going to read One Reckless Summer (Destiny, #1) by Toni Blake . I need light and some sex... just being honest. lol!

message 18: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) Oh didn't Kay love that series?

Glad you liked Cry Wolf.

message 19: by Leea (new)

Leea I was just wondering where I got the recommendation for that book. I seem to like the same contmps that Kay does:)

message 20: by Kay (new)

Kay (calikay) | 1216 comments Oh yes, the Destiny series is one of my fave contemporaries. I hope you like it, Leea.

Ursula, Demon from the Dark is my fave IAD book. I hope you enjoy Malkom & Carrow. The little girl in that one is cute too.

message 21: by Leea (new)

Leea One Reckless Summer is HOT!! If anyone has the fantasy of doing it (bow chika bowow!) with a stranger/someone you hardly know in the woods. This would be your book. lol!

Kay, are each book in the Destiny series about a new couple or the same one? I never read the synopsis for the next book in case there are spoilers.

message 22: by Kay (new)

Kay (calikay) | 1216 comments Each couple is different & you meet some of them in the first book. I loved how the sex happened right away in One Reckless Summer!! And you're right, it is effen hot!!

message 23: by D.G. (new)

D.G. One Reckless Summer sounds like my kind of book. I need to get my hands on a copy.

message 24: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) IIRC Toni Blake also writes erotic romance as Lacey Alexander

message 25: by D.G. (new)

D.G. I'm back reading Pandemonium (Delirium, #2) by Lauren Oliver . I think I started it at the wrong time because I'm really enjoying now.

message 26: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) That is good you are liking it now.

I just started Look Into My Eyes (Ruby Redfort, #1) by Lauren Child

I am listening to Paradise Valley (Virgin River, #7) by Robyn Carr Kitty and the Midnight Hour (Kitty Norville, #1) by Carrie Vaughn

and I just finished Born to Darkness (Fighting Destiny, #1) by Suzanne Brockmann The book is huge -- 510 pages. Big for this genre. I loved this first 270 pages or so, but it really dragged after that. I am mixed as to how I will rate it, I think the world she set up is amazing though. The characaters and the ultimate struggle fell flat though.

message 27: by D.G. (new)

D.G. The premise for the Brockmann book looks really interesting...although could she have found a better moniker than 'greater than'?

message 28: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) It makes sense in the world -- greater than and fractions. The names/labels refer to mathmatical numbers. The world is good, the vision is interesting and it is informed by Brockmann's politics and fears for the future. I am hoping that the next book is able to carry the momentum through the entire book. But honestly, I lose steam in many romance based books. I haven't before in Brockmann's troubleshooter series. Anyway, I will be reading the next one.

message 29: by Gwennie (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) I'm starting Troubleshooters after I finish Clash of Kings! I'm excited.

message 30: by Kay (new)

Kay (calikay) | 1216 comments Dee wrote: "IIRC Toni Blake also writes erotic romance as Lacey Alexander"

I didn't know that! Thanks! I will look for some of her erotica books soon.

message 31: by Kay (new)

Kay (calikay) | 1216 comments I am reading Broken by Megan Hart and I'm about halfway through. The situation in the book is not a happy one. I really don't know how the author will end the story. I hope to finish this book tonight.

Regina (reginar) Wendy F wrote: "I'm starting Troubleshooters after I finish Clash of Kings! I'm excited."

Cool! Remember 1 and 2 are just okay at best -- Kay can attest to that. :D And LOL -- after you finish Clash of Kings -- only a 1,000 pages or so.

message 33: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) Kay wrote: "I am reading Broken by Megan Hart and I'm about halfway through. The situation in the book is not a happy one. I really don't know how the author will end the story. I hope to finish this book..."

I have quite a few of her books on my kindle, but never have read them. Not happy doesn't sound like fun erotica!

message 34: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) I finished Kitty and the Midnight Hour (Kitty Norville, #1) by Carrie Vaughn , it was just okay. I now know I can't just read PNR and UF wholesale, it needs to be unique for me to get into it - -particularly if it involves werewolves and vamps. After reading so many good series about those supes and then not so good books about those supes - -the topic is no longer my go-to at all. Kind of sad. :(

message 35: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) This made me think of you Wendy -- the author of the Gone series is going to be at a local book store to me to promote his new series. :)

message 36: by Gwennie (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) Haha, 969 pages if you don't count the breakdown of the houses. I'm on page 601, so not too far.

I hated the first book. It was a DNF for me. I picked up #3 later and really enjoyed it. I need pick this series back up eventually.

message 38: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) Kay -- were you able to figure out what was going on by starting #3? Because Alyssa and Sam meet in #2 ......

I bought #1 in audio and tried to do a re-read and DNFed it -- what I could tolerate in 2003 was very different than what I like now. Brockmann was my first non-literary fiction read, so it was an entire new world. Do you think Wendy and Leea should start at 2 or 3? I think I recommended to you to start at 3 ....

message 39: by Kay (new)

Kay (calikay) | 1216 comments Regina, it really isn't a fun book. I don't know how to feel about it right now. I think I just need to finish it and find out the outcome of the characters before I can fully give my opinion. My GR friends' ratings are all over the place. Some rated it very high and others were low.

I also totally feel you about PNRs & UFs. It seems like after you read really good ones, other books don't even compare.

message 40: by Kay (new)

Kay (calikay) | 1216 comments when I picked up #3, I wasn't lost at all. The author did a good job with that.

message 41: by Gwennie (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) I'm waaaay too anal to start on 2 or 3. I only gave Wrath's book 3 stars, but kept reading those. How about this, I promise to read at least the first 3 books before I make a decision on the series?

message 42: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) Thanks Kay - -that is what many members in the Romantic Suspense group recommend - -start with 3.

Out of Control (Troubleshooters, #4) by Suzanne Brockmann is really really good. That is number 4. 3 and 4 are some of my favorites in her series (which has 16 books and several novellas!)

Honestly, I don't want to read sad erotica.

message 43: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) Okay, sounds good. I also give you permission to skim 1 and 2. Although, #2 still has a special place in my heart -- I just loved the set up of the romance.

Wrath's book is hotter - -and more modern though. 1 feels dated. Brockmann even said in her recent interview that she hit her stride with 3 and right before 3 was where she was able to get on to base and do research. Anyway -- enough, I am obsessing! LOL.

message 44: by D.G. (new)

D.G. From what I heard, Megan Hart writes erotic books that are sort of like contemporary fiction with tough themes and not always a HEA. So there's an erotic component to the stories but there's always a heavy emotional part that is not necessarily happy.

So if you expect it to be an erotic romance, it may not be.

(This is my impression from what friends have told me...never read one of her books but I'm planning to.)

message 45: by Kay (new)

Kay (calikay) | 1216 comments Thanks, DG. That is what I heard too. I decided to give this book a chance and also read outside what I'm normally use to. I just hope my heart won't be so broken when I'm done.

message 46: by Gwennie (new)

I remember you saying that before, that she hadn't been on base and done reasearch in the beginning. I'm sure it'll be decent at least, I hope.

message 47: by D.G. (new)

D.G. I'm starting to get what you mean about PNR, Regina. When I saw the list of the last 8 PNR series I started, there's not ONE that I can definitely say I'm excited to continue. There are a few where I may continue and some that I know I won't.

Maybe
A Hunger Like No Other (IAD)
Kiss of Midnight (Midnight Breed)
Eternal Rider (Lords of Deliverance)
If Angels Burn (Darkyns)

Definitely Won't Continue
Haunting Beauty
Firelight
Dark Prince
How to Flirt with a Naked Werewolf

I'm joining Wendy and starting Troubleshooter next... If anyone else wants to read with us - kind of an impromptu buddy read, we'd love it!

message 50: by D.G. (new)

D.G. I'm still in the waiting list for Troubleshooter #1 at the library...
