Hello,

In this topic I will be looking for group discussion leaders for upcoming books. I will list the books that need leaders as well as some suggested resources for the novice group leaders.

Have suggested resources that I should list here? Post them below. I'll give you credit!

When a book is posted it will be first come, first serve. Afterward I will delete the posts that relate to it to keep this thread clean. Same with the resource suggestions.

Brad and Zen, consider yourself discussion leaders!

message 3: by Robin (last edited Jan 02, 2009 04:57AM) (new)

Robin (robinsullivan) | 346 comments I've never been a "discussion" leader - but can read the information and feel comfortable starting things off.

let me know if you need me

message 4: by Brad (new)

Brad (judekyle) | 1607 comments I can lead the discussion for the Road if you don't mind having the same person do two in a row, Nick.

OK Brad, I'll put you on for The Road. Robin, when we select a theme book it is your book to lead if you wish.

I just started reading "Fire Upon the Deep" and the discussion. You are doing a great job, Brad. And, it will be great to have you leading the discussion of "The Road." Thanks for putting in the time and effort.

Anything is fine by me just let me know what and when. I've already read the Road so that was an easy one to volunteer for.

message 8: by Brad (new)

Brad (judekyle) | 1607 comments I don't want to steal The Road on you, Robin, if you want to do it. Sorry. I just thought your "let me know if you need me" was kind of a "I'll do it if no one else will." I don't want to step on any toes.

message 9: by Michael (last edited Feb 25, 2009 03:35AM) (new)

Michael (bigorangemichael) | 187 comments I'm leading the discussion for Watchmen in my local book group in February. So, if you need me, I can pull double duty...:)

message 10: by Grimnian (new)

Grimnian | 1 comments I'm very new here, so, not sure I'm much help..

message 11: by bsc (new)

bsc (bsc0) | 250 comments Having nominated Watchmen, I will volunteer for it. However, I've never read it before and I won't be starting it until next week so I would gladly relinquish my duty to someone else. Michael, or anyone else, let me know.

message 12: by Michael (new)

Michael (bigorangemichael) | 187 comments I've lead discussion here before, so I don't mind sharing if someone else wants to do it.

message 13: by Nick, Founder (In Absentia) (new)

Nick (nickqueen) | 303 comments Mod
Well, Michael I usually go first come first serve so you get it!

message 14: by Robin (new)

Robin (robinsullivan) | 346 comments I remain flexible - just let me know what if any you want me to lead.

message 15: by Roger (new)

Roger Cottrell (rogercottrell) | 7 comments I'm a masive fan of Watchmen and, indeed, of most of John Moore's canon (such as V For Vendetta) which locates a more mature version of the superhero genre in a dystopian future that owes much to Orwell. Having re-written 1984 as a noir thriller myself (LAST MAN OUT OF EUROPE) this kind of writing really interests me. I'm also trying to launch a magazine for dark science fiction (dystopias, cyberpunk with a socio-political edge) and was hoping for some feedback from the group. Fans of John Moore but also KC Kornbleuth, William Gibson, Philip K. Dick, George Orwell, Pat Cadigan, Bruce Sterling, Robert Sheckley, etc., should particularly apply.

Yeah, I've been patchy here lately on things. I'm in my final semester of college and busy!

message 17: by Robin (new)

Robin (robinsullivan) | 346 comments Nick, How do I get the various folders setup for the discussion?

Roger Cottrell (rogercottrell) | 7 comments I've just started reading THE ROAD having previously read NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN. It's the well worn story of a journey across post apocayltic America (although it could be anywhere) although the idea of a guy and his son with a cart, rather than a car, adds an interesting spin on the "road movie" scenario. The prose and flashback references are brilliant, particularly the idea of rainfall playing musc and the chilling images of grey ash everywhere. It's partly in the tradition of John Wyndham's DAY OF THE TRIFFIDS together with Terry Nation;s SURVIVORS (both UK), MAD MAX (with important qualification) EARTH ABIDES and so on. I've been working for a while on a novella in which post apocalyptic survivors fo in search of some SANCTUARY COMMUNITY only to find it infested with Christian Fundamentalist crazies and survivalists who think they are the only true inheritors of God's Kingdom and resolved to wipe out all who have "the mark ofg Cain upon them."
ROGER

message 20: by Roger (new)

Roger Cottrell (rogercottrell) | 7 comments In order to shamelessly promote my own science fiction novel, THE LUNDQUIST CHRONICLES (together with LAST MAN OUT OF EUROPE) I'd like to lead discussions on George Orwell's 1984 and the canon of Nigel Kneale - particularly the Quatermass series.
ROGER

Robin (robinsullivan) | 346 comments Nick could you please make a folder for "The Road" and I'll post some discussions....Thanks

You should be all set now Robin.

message 24: by Brad (new)

Brad (judekyle) | 1607 comments I'll take Suicide Collectors, Nick.

Nick (nickqueen) | 303 comments Mod
All yours.

message 26: by Robin (new)

Robin (robinsullivan) | 346 comments Michael is more than willing to lead the disussion for "The Crown Conspiracy" unless you would like someone "more distant" from the work.

message 27: by Nick, Founder (In Absentia) (new)

Nick (nickqueen) | 303 comments Mod
I would prefer someone else to lead but Michael to be available to answer questions.

message 28: by Robin (new)

Robin (robinsullivan) | 346 comments No problem - as I said - whatever part you want - is great by us - We're just tickled pink to be selected.

message 29: by Michael (new)

Michael (michaeljsullivan) | 110 comments I think it would be better if someone else lead TCC discussion as well. Robin and I know the series. We know the answers, so questions and topics would not be as authentic and we might inadvertently lead readers to conclusions they might not otherwise consider. Besides, I would prefer to hear what all of you have to say, what questions you come up with, and what your opinions are.

message 30: by Brooke (new)

Brooke | 0 comments I'll take The Crown Conspiracy - my order on Amazon is pending new shipments, but surely it will arrive in time before April.

message 31: by [deleted user] (new)

Well, I guess I'll do the Alphabet. That should be within my abilities.

message 32: by Nick, Founder (In Absentia) (new)

Nick (nickqueen) | 303 comments Mod
OK Thomas and Brooke! Thanks!

message 33: by [deleted user] (new)

I would be available to lead a discussion of my book, "Space Maruaders - The Obliteration of Zalamonton". Just let me know! Thanks!

message 34: by Brad (new)

Brad (judekyle) | 1607 comments We need a discussion leader for next month's Sci-Fi Parody/Spoof theme winner: To Say Nothing of the Dog by Connie Willis.

Who's up for it?

message 35: by Brad (new)

Brad (judekyle) | 1607 comments How about you, Jon? I know you've already read it. C'mon...you'd be great!

message 36: by Jon (new)

Jon (jonmoss) | 889 comments Brad wrote: "How about you, Jon? I know you've already read it. C'mon...you'd be great!"

I would volunteer but my daughter is wrapping up her final semester of college before moving on to the next level in another state. I have too many commitments. :(

message 37: by Brad (new)

Brad (judekyle) | 1607 comments THAT is a good reason. You are off the hook. Go Jon's daughter!

message 38: by Shannon (new)

Shannon (shannoncb) We also need a discussion leader for Tigana.
Volunteers?

message 39: by Brad (new)

Brad (judekyle) | 1607 comments I'll trade you, Shannon or Brooke. I'll do Tigana if one of you does To Say Nothing of the Dog.

message 40: by Shannon (new)

Shannon (shannoncb) All right, you're on. I'll do To Say Nothing of the Dog. I've already read Tigana and probably wouldn't have time to re-read it to refresh my memory. I'll update the book info with this if you like :)

message 41: by Brad (new)

Brad (judekyle) | 1607 comments Sounds good, Shannon. Let's do it.

message 42: by Shannon (new)

Shannon (shannoncb) :D

message 43: by Shannon (new)

Shannon (shannoncb) Is anyone interested in being the discussion leader for July's Fantasy pick, Good Omens by Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman?

message 44: by Robin (new)

Robin (robinsullivan) | 346 comments Oh - I LOVE This book - I'd love to ;-)

message 45: by Shannon (new)

Shannon (shannoncb) Thanks Robin!

message 46: by Shannon (new)

Shannon (shannoncb) We need a discussion leader for The Left Hand of Darkness - volunteers please?

message 47: by Brad (new)

Brad (judekyle) | 1607 comments It's looking good for The Left Hand of Darkness, Shannon, but we've got one more round of voting starting at midnight. The top four vote getters will face off, so things could still change.

message 48: by Shannon (new)

Shannon (shannoncb) Sorry, I thought it said voting finished today - jumping the gun! I like getting a chance to vote again :)

message 49: by Brad (new)

Brad (judekyle) | 1607 comments The winner is indeed The Left Hand of Darkness, so we need a volunteer to lead us. Any takers?

message 50: by Brad (new)

Brad (judekyle) | 1607 comments C'mon fellow members. Are there no takers for leading the Left Hand of Darkness Discussion? There must be someone out there willing to step up.
