Mary Vogel (nerdvogel) | 4 comments What is the funniest book you've ever read? Or what is a funny book you're looking forward to reading?

I am looking for a good book that is about something important, expresses the wide gamut of what it means to be a human, and most importantly will make me laugh. I have been wanting to read Ernest Hemingway (I've never read any of his stuff) and I want to laugh out loud. A setting in New York City or Paris would be ideal but please throw all suggestions at me!
Only thing: No British humor!! I think I just don't get it...

Have you read Confederacy of Dunces, noob?

message 4: by Suefly (new)

Suefly | 620 comments Squirrel Meets Chipmunk made me laugh put loud, but I have a quirky sense of humor. I think the bunnies are hilarious as well. Squirrel Seeks Chipmunk A Modest Bestiary by David Sedaris

David Sedaris makes me want to pluck my eyelashes out.

Maybe Tender Buttons?

The change the dirt, not to change dirt means that there is no beefsteak and not to have that is no obstruction, it is so easy to exchange meaning, it is so easy to see the difference. The difference is that a plain resource is not entangled with thickness and it does not mean that thickness shows such cutting, it does mean that a meadow is useful and a cow absurd.

I don't get that author.

message 11: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 13814 comments Yeah, Christopher Moore doesn't do it for me. But most good funny fiction that I can think of is British.
I'm not sure how Hemingway fits in with the funny.

I agree Charly....I chuckled out loud a few times.

I wonder if Mary thinks Hemmingway would be intersting to read and is just tossing his name into her query hoping that he might have something that pleases the funny bone?

I wonder if Steinbeck could do the trick? How about Mark Twain?

message 14: by Heidi (new)

Heidi (heidihooo) | 10825 comments Carl Hiassen, Elmore Leonard, Christopher Buckley... they're all hilarious.

I love David Sedaris, too... even if he does make Sally want to pluck her eyelashes out.

Confederacy of Dunces is one of my top three favorite books of all time.

The only authors that have honestly made me laugh out loud might be Augusten Burroughs and that guy who wrote Sex Lives of Cannibals. Oh and Sean Condon.

message 17: by ~Geektastic~ (new)

~Geektastic~ (atroskity) | 3205 comments Augusten Burroughs is great, but I generally laugh while cringing when reading him. All my other favorite funny books are British, though. So, not much help from me.

Phil | 11837 comments I laughed a little while reading Mary Roach's work.

Oh, I won the thread, bitches! Mary put Tender Buttons on her to-read list.

That's how it's done.

message 21: by Mary (new)

Mary Vogel (nerdvogel) | 4 comments Thanks so much everyone for your fabulous suggestions! I've added a few things on my to-read list and am looking forward to them! As far as Hemingway goes...I think A Moveable Feast will be delightfully entertaining and I think that is what I will read first once I'm done with my current book.
Keep the suggestions flowing as you feel compelled!
Satire might also be in order. I don't necessarily want to be laughing the whole way through, but to be struck by funny moments/characters.

Cheri | 795 comments The Lust Lizard of Melancholy Cove has everything and is my favorite. Fluke: Or, I Know Why the Winged Whale Sings is delightful.

Nothing funny about Steinbeck for me but I love Twain's satire, especially what was published after his death: Letters from the Earth: Uncensored Writings

C. J. Scurria (goodreadscomcj_scurria) There is Bill Cosby though I didn't read the books we had that he had done.

I have read an inspirational book by a songwriter/comedian called Out Of Control. It was by Mark Lowry.

Maybe The Day I Shot Cupid: Hello, My Name Is Jennifer Love Hewitt and I'm a Love-aholic would be LOLerific? It's where Jennifer Love Hewitt talks about the joys of vajazzling oneself.

That sounds more like a horror story than anything else

Avatar just means the picture you have associated with yourself.

I think Sally is calling me fat, is what is going on here.
