If you're a writer based outside of the US, 30% of your US income is withheld when you receive payments.

It's been difficult to recover this withheld tax but a recent blog post suggests a simple method:

Just to add that I've heard from a number of sources that if tax is withheld in the US (at 30%), it should be possible to set this against UK tax.

If so, that would make it less necessary to go through the exemption route, especially if you are a higher rate tax payer in the UK.

Does anyone have any experience of this?

Further to the last message, you would be likely to pay the difference as UK tax (i.e. 40% - 30% = 10 %)
