Should I finish the book?

My fiance & I are both huge fans of the AMC series The Walking Dead. He recently read The Walking Dead: Compendium One for an English lit class focused on the horror genre, and recommended it to me.

I began reading, but stopped right at the end of Chapter Two, where they find the prison, because this is right where the end of season two of the show leaves off.

While I certainly found the book entertaining enough, I didn't enjoy it nearly as much as I do the show (graphic novels just aren't my usual m.o.).

I am concerned that reading the rest of the book is going to give away major plot points of future seasons, and make the show less enjoyable, but my fiance argues that the first two seasons are different enough from the first two chapters, that overall it wont have that much of an impact on my enjoyment of future seasons.

However, since we both started reading the book after we began watching the show, I thought I'd look for input from people who read the book first. Did it spoil the show? Sap the drama out of otherwise shocking scenes?

yes you should read the rest of the book. i've read all the available chapters and am a avid fan of both the graphic novels and the show. Even though i have read it, the show still is new and suprising to me. The show writers do a wonderful job of staying true to the books and yet coming up with new suprises. I'm a big fan of the FOX show Fringe and have a Fringe double universe take on the Walking Dead show and books. The books are one universe and the show is an alternate universe, but both have amazingly awesome stories. back to your question, although it might give away major plot points or characters, the writers on the show still make it interesting and somehow new to those who think they whats coming.

The prison arc is excellent and introduces new memorable characters. If you're worried about getting spoiled then you shouldn't read chapter two since you enjoyed the tv show more. If you don't read it you won't have anything to worry about. If you do you may have months of restless nights worrying about spoilers.

Reading the rest will certainly give away major plot points especially those concerning the iconic character introduced in the prison arc. This character has been casted for season 3, in the compendium he first appears in chapter 5. So aside from the differences there might be plenty of material that doesn't make it to the show. Compendium one ends with the conclusion of the prison storyline.

I read the compendium between seasons 1 and 2 when I decided that I needed more zombies in my life. I enjoyed season 2 just as much as the first regardless of spoilers, but I'm the kind of person who likes to read the book before watching the movie. The second portion of season 2 has been my favorite so far. The differences between the comic and show definitely helped keep things interesting.

The prison arc is probably one of the most exciting parts in the series. The book is extremely engrossing and takes a completely new twist which saps you in. Even though you will know whats gonna happen on the show it will still make reading this a complete joy. Reading the novel will reveal the major plot lines and new characters for sure but story is worth it.
Also I think the show does not follow the graphic novel to the T so i am sure you will still find a lot of novelty on it.
Happy reading.
Cheers!!!

I'd say read the rest. The show doesn't follow the comics dead on and they already admitted they wont be adding all the characters to the show. But still it's up to you. I'd read them just so you can meet everyone and understand the main story behind the show. Take care!

Yes, this series rocks. I am hoping Season 3 does the prison storyline correctly.

READ ON! The graphic novels don't exactly go hand in hand with the series, so there will still be tons of surprises either way! Once you get sucked into the books you will LOVE the series that much more (and it's kinda fun knowing more than everybody else does)

Also you should read The 2 newest novels Walking Dead: Rise of the Governor & Walking Dead: The Road To Woodbury (in that order). They coincide with the graphic novels but will not spoil anything because they are sort of "prequels" to them.

Also you will learn where the governor came from and what made him the way he "is".

Hope you're enjoying! :)

The show will not be following the book; the same characters do not die in the book that die on the show. The show also added characters. Def read the books / graphic novels. I anxiously wait for the new graphic novels as they come out.

Agreed. The books are shockingly better than the show, and will not detract from your television experience in any way if they're read before the show progresses. In fact, I read both compendiums between the midseason finale and the midseason premiere of Season Three, and still cannot wait to see what happens in the show. The two storylines are different enough that not all that much will be given away.

Hi there, I hope someone can answer my question if it hasn't been answered already (sorry for not reading the long comments all the way through) how many pages do the graphic novels have on average/I am an avid reader.. How long do you estimate it would take me to read these novels.. Also I have been looking these novels up so I can check them out at the library.. Hopefully someone knows.. Is there a difference between the comics and the books? I've been seeing both online

Have to say that books are always better than the show/movie. The book covers the story in much broader detail and the artwork alone is high quality. If you get the chance, pick up the first addition of the Walking Dead Magazine that has just come out. It also discusses the pro and cons of reading the book/watching the show with the creators feedback.
