April | 3 comments Hi! I was so excited to find this group. I am currently working on the 1001 books for adults. When I saw this group, my daughter and decided we could work this challenge together. Is the group still active with the monthly book club?

Hi April! I've just joined too. I'm so excited to work on this challenge (even though I'm a grown-up and I don't have any kids!) I don't know if the group is still active, but the two of us are here at least!

message 3: by southpaw285 (new)

southpaw285 Hi April and Briar Rose. I too would love to work on this list. I've been a member of this group for quite some time, but I never see it active.

I don't know what we can do. Maybe contact the moderator and ask if they will let someone else either moderate or co-moderate the group so that we can get it active again. Just a thought.

message 4: by April (new)

April | 3 comments Sounds good to me! Or, I guess we could decided among the three of three of us what we want to read? I guess it doesn't have to be formal. I don't know!

message 5: by Linda (new)

Linda (lindajane) | 70 comments Hi gang - I'm still here too. Working my way through the 8+ group at the moment and enjoying it immensely! My 10 year old is also keen on some of the books that I've found for him along the way.

Rowan of Rin by Emily Rodda has to be one of the best 8-10 yo books ever written. She is a truly remarkable author.

I don't have time to moderate, but would gladly join you in choosing a book each month to discuss. Perhaps even a picture book each month as well.

message 6: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie (ontariogal) | 7 comments I would join in if this went ahead too!

Briar Rose | 39 comments Mod
Cool! Well I'm glad that there are a few of us interested :)

We may as well start with preliminaries - anyone have a preference about which age group or decade of publication to start with? Linda, you said you're reading the 8+ group so what if we started there?

message 8: by Briar Rose (new)

Briar Rose | 39 comments Mod
I just wrote to the moderator Roland. I'll let you know how it goes - hopefully we can get this started!

message 9: by Beth (new)

Beth (eparks4232) | 1 comments Count me in too! My daughter is 4, so we will be particularly into the books for little ones. Meanwhile, I'm working my way through the adult lists (about 10% of my way into it...).

message 10: by Briar Rose (new)

Briar Rose | 39 comments Mod
Hi Beth, glad you could join us! I'm sure we could do a 3+ book each month as well, since they're so short & easy to read.

message 11: by Briar Rose (new)

Briar Rose | 39 comments Mod
Well ... easy to read for us grown-ups anyway!

message 12: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie (ontariogal) | 7 comments Beth, my daughter is 4 too! So we will be on the same page.

message 13: by Candy (new)

Candy Gourlay (candygourlay) Hey I'll be happy to join you guys if you get this going! I write for this age range and just love what's out there. But I'm based in the UK so I might be able to contribute some titles you won't have heard of.

I just heard back from Roland, and he's happy to make one of us moderator. Does anyone want the job? I'm willing to do it if no one else puts their hand up, but let me know if one of you would prefer to take the job!

message 15: by Briar Rose (new)

Briar Rose | 39 comments Mod
Well, looks like I'm the new moderator! I've sent out an email so we can vote for a May read. Please vote. It'll be great to get the monthly read going again.

You go Girl!

Awesome effort - & we'll try to make it easy for you.

message 17: by Linda (new)

Linda (lindajane) | 70 comments Oh yes, and in my spare moments I'll go back to adding books to the bookshelf. I'll see if I can export/import my own 1001 bookshelf (but that may be just wishful thinking ...)

Unless someone knows of a quick way of creating the list other than manually?

message 18: by Briar Rose (new)

Briar Rose | 39 comments Mod
Thanks Linda, that would be wonderful. I'm afraid I don't know any other way of putting books on the group shelf apart from one at a time.

message 19: by Garsy (new)

Garsy I'm still around! Had to take a brief break from my 1001 challenge due to family and work issues. BUT summer's here and hopefully I'll be reading a LOT more!

message 20: by Briar Rose (new)

Briar Rose | 39 comments Mod
Hi Garsy! It'll be great to hear your thoughts on the books as summer progresses :)

MK (wisny) Hello :)

I joined seeking people who know lots about kids chapter books, particularly from the early 70s or so.

There is this one book that I can only just sortof recall, but I remember that I loved it. The only thing I can remember is that the two main characters (who I think were a brother and a sister, but not sure about that) found, or maybe fell through a hidden entrance, to an underground forest world passageway. The entrance was at the base of a very large tree.

What I can remember vividly is the description of the roof of the tunnel they were walking through, once they entered this passageway. It described what looked like many intertwined branches overhead, which were the trees roots, and not branches at all.

Stuck with me forever, the way the book pointed out that root systems underground were as wide and many, as what you see aboveground in the branches.

I can't remember anything about what happened after they passed through this passageway, or what happened before ... but I would LOVE to find the book again, and re-read it. Find out why it's stuck in my mind for 4 decades or so :)

MK (wisny) Someone in another group knew the book, it had also been a childhood favorite of hers, one of a handful she'd kept these many decades :-).

The book - Magic in the Park, by Ruth Chew. Magic in the Park by Ruth Chew

She wrote many childhood books, the earliest ten or so of which I remember reading and loving :-). Link -http://www.ruthchew.com/about-the-books/

message 32: by Christine PNW (last edited Sep 11, 2015 11:57AM) (new)

Christine PNW (moonlight_reader) Good morning! I've just embarked on a project focused on classic children's literature. When I went looking for a group, this was the most relevant one I could fine, although I'm primarily focused on middle grade/YA literature that is more than 20 years old (think A Wrinkle in Time & The Railway Children), as opposed to picture books. I thought I'd join up and read along with some of your book selections where they fit in with books on my list.

Welcome to our group!

You can look at our bookshelf and see that we have books categorized by age level, so you might be particularly interested in the "ages_12_and_up" shelf.

Heather (ladymcheth) | 42 comments Hello! I discovered this group accidentally somehow but delighted I did. I've recently decided to dive into this list. I'm a Primary School Teacher in Australia but currently on leave recovering from CFS so it felt like the perfect time to read loads of kid lit in preparation to returning to work. Besides, I just love children's literature and am excited to find some new treasures.

Welcome Heather! We're having lots of fun making our way through the 1001, it's great being able to discuss them with others :)

Welcome to our group Karin, I am so happy that you have joined us. I look forward to discussing the books we read as a group with you.

message 40: by Isobel (new)

Isobel Atkins Hello,
I'm Isobel and this group brings back memories. I was a member of the group for the grownup version 1001 books to read before you die, then I had kids. Since then, sadly, many really good books just frustrate me because I don't have enough time to myself to appreciate them.

Luckily I adore kids books. Story time is the best time at our house (for me at least).

message 41: by Cataluna6 (new)

Cataluna6 | 128 comments Hi Isobel, welcome to the group :) story time really is the best time! I don't have kids so I'm lucky enough to have time to keep reading both the adult and the children's 1001 lists - at a snails pace mind you. Hope you'll join us for the monthly group reads.

I wish I didn't have so many things to read, I'm always envious of people reading the lists finishing 50+ each year!!

I'm just as bad sometimes, ( case in point this month), work has been ridiculous the last couple of weeks, I've had kinder visits this week so I've been concentrating on that.
