Nat (alme) | 2 comments Hey all,
I'm not sure if this is the right place to be posting this, but I am looking for a book recomendation. For a school project, I need a book that is heavy in symbolism and themese. Any ideas?
Thanks

Yulia | 1646 comments I don't care for it myself, but you could do Toni Morrison's Beloved. That's as symbol-heavy as they get.

El I agree with Yulia's recommendation. Otherwise just about anything by Margaret Atwood, specifically Surfacing or Cat's Eye.

Whitaker (lechatquilit) Two I did way back when I was studying are chock-a-block full of themes and symbols - likely why they got put on the syllabus: Sons and Lovers by DH Lawrence, which also has the virtue of being an interesting read; and Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man by James Joyce, which has the virtue of being short. Something that is short and interesting and jam-packed with themes and symbols is Hemingway's The Old Man and the Sea.

Mary Crabtree (boonebridgebookscom) | 8 comments Good choice Whitaker - I vote for "The Old Man and the Sea"

Leslie (lesld) Song of Solomon, by Toni Morrison, has a great deal of symbolism as well.

Pamela | 127 comments I'd also suggest The Scarlet Letter, and maybe some of Hawthorne's short stories --"Rappacini's Daughter," or "The Birthmark."

Sherry | 8261 comments I was going to suggest Hawthorne, too, although in my age, TSL was over-taught. I just read it again a couple years ago, within the context of a course, and it was enlightening.

Nat (alme) | 2 comments Thank you all so much! I didn't expect so many awesome replies. I've chosen The Old Man and the Sea(and almost finished it... it's supposed to be read over the next month or so), but have definietly added to me TBR list. Again, thank you!
