What's the Name of That Book??? discussion

I love the movie Dragonfly starring Kevin Costner and I swear I read a book with a similar (if not identical) storyline/plot. However I cant recall what it was called or find it by googling etc. Anyone have any ideas?

The plot of the movie is below:
Dr. Joe Darrow's wife Emily has died in a bus accident in South America, and he's slowly learning how to cope with her death...until dead and dying patients start to speak to him in his wife's voice. With each new message he becomes more convinced she's trying to contact him, to tell him something important. He goes to where the accident was - and ultimately finds a tribe - where he discovered they found her and someone brought her unborn child to term and were raising it until he got there...so he was united with the child he didnt know about.

The part that is most familiar to a book storyline is the bus accident and him returning to the site...but I am stuck.

Except for the bit about the child, this sounds a lot like what happened to an anthropologist. I can't remember his name off hand and I can't access my texts, but he wrote about the grieving process used by the tribe and how it helped him cope with the death of his wife.
Not sure if that is at all helpful though.
