Into the Wild
question
Forgiveness

Did any one find it really sad that Chris didn't leave a "good-bye" to his parents? I think that struck me as much as his untimely death...that part of his desire to be on this adventure was his horror at finding his parents' dark secrets. It must have been hard to reconcile, but as a parent, that he did not leave a final note of forgiveness, of love...in addition to his death as a very young man, that would have haunted me all my days.

I agree. Chris wanted to transcend everything, but he held onto his disappointment in his parents. True transcendence includes taking other people's feelings into account, no matter how you feel about them.
His diary does show he was considering going back into civilization though, so perhaps he had forgiven his parents in the end.
From the articles I've read since reading Into the Wild, the relationship with his parents was far more unhealthy than it appears in this book. I understood him much better and judged him much less harshly with more information. His sister has a book which apparently tells more of the whole story. I believe it was she who asked Krakauer to be sparing as to the depths of the family dysfunction.
