You can sort your shelves by number of ratings -- at the bottom of your "my books" page there is a drop down box for "sort". Choose "number of ratings" and then click the radio button for "desc."
At the top of most pages, click the down arrow button to the right of "explore" and choose "popular" which shows the most popular books by year published. To the left of that page is a link for "most read". On the most read page, at the top, you can choose " this week/this month/this year" and "my country/the world".
I think there used to be a "Most read Books" of all time somewhere, but I can't find it.

I've tried the "popular" most read page for the week / month, but it seems to be for books that are recently published and "in" at the moment. Some of those only have a few thousand ratings all up. There isn't much representation in the 1001 category. However, the list of books you listed out are great Liz, thanks.
Thanks for the listopia link Elizabeth, that's exactly what I was after!
Haha, that's so true Katie :))

Scroll down, on the right hand side it says "Genres". Click "Fiction"
Scroll down, on the left it will say, "Popular Fiction Books"- click that.
It will take you to the listing of the most popular books shelved "Fiction". So, the amount of people who have added and rated it are not in order. It's listed by the amount of times it's been tagged as fiction.
You can do this from the "Genres" link for any GR shelf.
I'm currently reading the classic 1984 and noticed that it has over 555,446 ratings!! Wow that's a lot of people.
So I was just wondering what other books out there are so popular. I know the Kite Runner had around the 544,000 mark.
Has anyone read a book lately that had so many ratings? Is there a way to find this out on Goodreads that I'm not aware of? I would like to know which books are the most read and rated out there...
