Kevin Xu (kxu65) | 530 comments Same as always, just wondering what everyone is reading for this month. Just finished the four books in Book of the New Suns by Gene Wolfe. So I will try to pick out a book to read by Monday. Maybe I will try to read the sequel, The Book of the Long Sun, which I do have as I got all the Wolfe books from the library.

message 2: by Razmatus (new)

Razmatus | 208 comments Deadhouse Gates (Malazan Book of the Fallen, #2) by Steven Erikson Deadhouse gates, nearing the midst of it, so far it is awesome and even though Gardens of the Moon was really really good, this one is much better even now :)

message 3: by Matt (new)

Matt Deadhouse gates is awesome. One of my favorites, though the next two I think are the best in the series.

Reading the Crimson Guard, right now which I really like. That faction in the books has always been this mysterious force, that was considered very powerful. The one thing I like about Erikson is that all the characters, groups, ect, might seem super powerful, but they do have these major flaws that basically bring many of them down to the lower level.

message 4: by Mpauli (new)

Mpauli Reading The Eye of the World for the read in the series group.

Apart from that, I'm planing to alternate between Revelation Space, Acacia: The War with the Mein and The Hunger Games to see what the hype is all about.

message 5: by John (last edited Mar 31, 2012 10:51PM) (new)

John Currently reading:
Hyperion by Dan Simmons
The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas
The Explorer by W. Somerset Maugham

Planning on reading
The Well of Ascension (Mistborn, #2) by Brandon Sanderson
Return of the Crimson Guard (Malazan Empire, #2) by Ian C. Esslemont
Memnoch the Devil (The Vampire Chronicles, #5) by Anne Rice

when I am done with this saga I will read some other things, since it takes time for an order to arrive in here, and I definitely want to order the collection of novellas by Erikson and all books from this world that are out by Esslemont if possible :)

as for those flaws, well, many of them think themselves very powerful, but it is often circumstances that bring them down... like there is e.g. a powerful mage that could easily sweep down armies, but he cant use his warren cos there is another warren nearby that would kill him in an instant if he unleashed his :)

message 7: by Martha (new)

Martha (tilla) | 194 comments Re-readin The Spirit Lens and Soul Mirror by Carol Berg while I wait to get back to CA and pick up The Daemon Prism. Reading The Elenium which I borrowed from a friend at work

message 8: by Maggie (last edited Apr 01, 2012 09:47AM) (new)

Maggie K | 282 comments April's BotM picks caused me some concern, as like 9 of them were on my TBR and I own them so I am having a hard time narrowing it down!

So I finished Kitty and the Midnight Hour started up The Einstein Intersection the other day and last night worked Little, Big in with it...

Going to read also: The Well of AscensionEnder's Game and am hoping to get to Blackout, Frankenstein and Daggerspell

LOL, such a conundrum. I've slowed down this year, finally beginning to wonder if it's really a case of 'the one who dies with the most books wins'. I'm going to join in a read of Blackout. Other than that, I haven't decided. Am currently listening to The Terror. All I could find was an abridged version which is normally taboo with me, but after following the discussion in another book club, I decided it would be ok. Am enjoying it so far.

message 10: by Ena (new)

Ena (enantoiel) I'm planning to catch up with group reads as much as I can this month. Currently I'm on the last book of Riyria Chronicles ( Heir of Novron third book of omnibus version)
After that I'll finish Mort and hopefully start Mistborn: The Final Empire and maybe Gardens of the Moon but I'm in dire need of lighthearted, easy reading material, for these series are emotionally demanding reads.

message 11: by Elise (new)

Elise (ghostgurl) | 1028 comments I finished The Alloy of Law the other day. I would call it episodic. When's the next episode?

So now I'm currently reading Wastelands: Stories of the Apocalypse and of course Blackveil on my Kindle.

Helen | 3616 comments Mod
I'm starting a new book tonight but not sure if it will be the first Mistborn or Golden Fool.

message 13: by Sofie (new)

Sofie (duskbloom) Just finished Soulless and now I'm currently reading The War of the Worlds. Next week is a school holiday (Easter and all that) so there will be plenty of time for reading! I got Boneshaker, Clockwork Angel and I, Lucifer: Finally, the Other Side of the Story from the library last week, so I'll try to finish them off this month. (And I just realized - when I finish this list I will be done with my yearly challenge! Maybe it's time to raise that goal from 20 books to 40 or 50...)

Joseph | 1651 comments Kevin wrote: "Same as always, just wondering what everyone is reading for this month. Just finished the four books in Book of the New Suns by Gene Wolfe. So I will try to pick out a book to read by Monday. Maybe..."

The Urth of the New Sun is actually the direct sequel (Wolfe calls it a coda) to Book of the New Sun. Long Sun is a kind of prequel. Then there's a trilogy, Book of the Short Sun, that's a sequel to Long Sun but that also ties it more directly to New Sun.

Really need to revisit those -- they're right up at the top of my favorites list.

message 15: by Joseph (new)

Joseph | 1651 comments I finished An Ill Fate Marshalling and started Glen Cook's final Dread Empire book, A Path to Coldness of Heart.

message 16: by Nissa Tanura (new)

Nissa Tanura (nissatanura) I'm still on Alexandre Dumas - Count of Monte Cristo since January but haven't finish yet.

message 17: by Kate (new)

Kate | 42 comments I'm currently re-reading Hounded and then I'm finally going to start The Warded Man.

message 18: by Sadie (new)

Sadie I'm reading the Lies of Locke Lamora right now and hopefully I'll be able to finish the last of the Mistborn series, the Hero of Ages, sometime this month. Mistborn was excellent, the second book in the series (the Well of Ascension) was ok.... but I just can't seem to get into the last one... Hopefully this is the month!

message 19: by Pickle (new)

Pickle | 87 comments currently reading The Name of the Wind after reading the excellent The Lies of Locke Lamora but im not finding it as absorbing or interesting. 130 pages in and the story hasnt really kicked in, i really hope it improves.

after this i plan to read:

Martian Time-Slip
Who Goes There? Seven Tales of Science-Fiction
To Green Angel Tower

message 20: by D.G. (last edited Apr 02, 2012 04:11AM) (new)

D.G. Right now I'm reading romance, a thriller and the abridged version of On the Origin of Species, narrated by Richard Dawkins. I'm finding it really easy to follow and I'm not much of a science person (although I have basic knowledge about the theory of evolution.)

These are my next two reads:
The Thief (The Queen's Thief, #1) by Megan Whalen Turner (ebook)
Hammered (Iron Druid Chronicles, #3) by Kevin Hearne (audio)

message 21: by Lizzy (new)

Lizzy (kymethra) I'm reading Eye of the Labyrinth after having it on my shelf for ages (just finished the first in the trilogy). It's fairly standard political fantasy (rather than magic based), but I'm enjoying it. I'm going to pick up The Magicians when I've finished all three in the series. I've not decided beyond that yet.

Yeah, I know but I cannot find a copy right now.

Joseph | 1651 comments Kevin wrote: "Yeah, I know but I cannot find a copy right now."

That's too bad; here's hoping one turns up. I'll be interested to hear what you think of the Long Sun books when you get around to them; they're very different in tone from New Sun.

message 25: by [deleted user] (last edited Apr 02, 2012 03:23PM) (new)

Taking a break from the Malazan book, recently finished with House of Chains. I love the series, but have been wanting to read Sanderson's Mistborn books so I am reading them with the sister group. I am about through with Mistborn: The Final Empire and will proceed with The Well of Ascension and The Hero of Ages before returning to Malazan. So far I am enjoying Mistborn, very intriguing magic system and, compared to Erikson, easy to read and follow.

message 26: by Razmatus (new)

Razmatus | 208 comments I intend on reading the series in whole... I like my brains nice and crisply fried :D

Scott (Ozziespur) Finished Hounded & Hexed, now onto The lies of Locke Lamora. Enjoyed the Kevin Hearne books & have just started the highly rated Scott Lynch series.

message 28: by Eli (new)

Eli Adelholm (eliadelholm) | 46 comments I am still not quite finished with Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell but I'm getting closer. After that I am considering starting on The Name of the Wind.

message 29: by Jenny (new)

Jenny (jennyc89) I've joined in on the The Eye of the World series read. I'll also start listening to All Together Dead on audio today.

message 30: by Tara (new)

Tara (tarabookreads) I just finished The Hero of Ages, loved the Mistborn trilogy. Now I can't seem to decide what to read next.

message 31: by Tara (new)

Tara (tarabookreads) Yea that is on my to-read list for sure, I just wanted to read something in between first :)

message 32: by Helen, I·ᴍ ɪɴ ᴛʜᴇ ʟɪʙʀᴀʀʏ (new)

Helen | 3616 comments Mod
I had decided to read Golden Fool but left it downstairs when I went to bed so started Mistborn: The Final Empire, which I'm enjoying.
Shameless Hussy - I read the Thief a couple of months ago and loved it.

message 33: by Tweedledum (new)

Tweedledum | 6 comments Just finished The King's Bastard and it was amazing. Now I am reading Elegy Beach

message 34: by Kerry (last edited Apr 04, 2012 07:36AM) (new)

Kerry (bkmcavoy) Currently I am reading Farland's The Sum of All Men. Thoroughly enjoying the different use of magic. This apparently is an older series, called The Runelords, but I haven't come across it before.

message 35: by David (last edited Apr 04, 2012 02:44PM) (new)

David Berger (idavidberger) Right now, I'm reading a few books, but not sure one would be considering fantasy The Night Circus, more steampunk. I'm also finishing The Lost Hero and
Coven of Wolves.

When summer comes, I'll have more time to read (students will be gone). I'd love some new fantasy reads, so any suggestions would be awesome.

message 36: by Kevin (new)

Kevin Xu (kxu65) | 530 comments Finished up Oryx and Crake in one day, not the best read I have ever had, really wished it was a lot better than it actually was.

message 37: by Mimi (new)

Mimi (parrotheadwhovian) I have been working on Stephen King's Dark Tower series for a couple months now and I am finally on Book 7 which is the final book. It is such an excellent and unique fantasy/sci fi/horror quest and I'm. on pins and needles as I get closer to the end.

Love that series. King is coming out with a new book, a supplemental book about Roland and his early days, later this month.
The Wind Through the Keyhole.
Excited about this one.

message 39: by Nilah (new)

Nilah I thought I commented on this thread already but can't find my post. Too many message boards on Goodreads lol! Anyway I'm almost done with The Gamble of the Godless and really enjoying it a lot.

Kevin: I've been thinking of trying Oryx and Crake because I like The Handmaid's Tale so much. I've heard mixed things though (and not just from you!)

message 40: by Toby (new)

Toby Gradkowski Just finished The Dark Is Rising, which was so-so. Now reading Loki, and it's got me instantly hooked.

Nilah, I liked Oryx and Crake a lot more than Handmaid's Tale, so different srokes. I read them both a long time ago & never even finished. Handmaid. But The Gamble of the Godless was the best straight-up fantasy novel I read in a long time.

David, try [book:Tigana
, The Knife of Never Letting Go, Ender's Game. Those are some of my favorites I've read recently that I didn't see on your bookshelf.

message 42: by Yvonne (new)

Yvonne (yinari) I'm currently reading Ghosts of Ascalon and Midnight Tides

message 43: by Swiftsea (new)

Swiftsea Manga Love so Life etc.; and if actual books, The Valisar Trilogy by Fiona Mcintosh and the Necromancer Chronicles by Amanda Downum. I'm also planning to read Catching Fire (Hunger Games Trilogy) on the 16th when I head back to Melbourne.

message 44: by Victoria (new)

Victoria Limbert (vickylimbert) Tithe by Holly Black, I think its Ok at the moment but the reviews are very mixed and lean towards the negative, but then I have never really been one to solely follow reviews. I like to make my own mind up.

message 45: by Joseph (new)

Joseph | 1651 comments Finished A Path to Coldness of Heart (finally I know what happened to Bragi Ragnarson!) and started Sung in Blood, a standalone also by Glen Cook.

message 46: by Merve (new)

Merve (mervexyz) I'm currently reading Crime and Punishment and planning to read Smith of Wootton Major & Farmer Giles of Ham by Tolkien next.

message 47: by Tish (new)

Tish | 46 comments The Night Circus finally came in--I'd been on the waiting list at the library since Jan.2! Also this month, read Graceling and Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children and planning to read Everlost.

message 48: by Andrew (new)

Andrew Humphrey i am reading Deadhouse gates and a a feast for crows both are awsome right now

message 49: by Victoria (new)

Victoria Limbert (vickylimbert) Marilyn wrote: "I love all Holly Black's work but Tithe is probably my favorite. I hope you enjoy it :)"

I hope I do, scanning the reviews its a very mixed view. I am just over half way through and so far I am really enjoying it. I dont mind the swearing as its true to teen life. Besides once you have read Laurell.k.Hamilton's Anita Blake and Merry Gentry series, nothing can shock you. :)

message 50: by Razmatus (new)

Razmatus | 208 comments Andrew wrote: "i am reading Deadhouse gates and a a feast for crows both are awsome right now"

wow, my brain would blast from reading those two at the same time... given that AFFC is the hardest to digest from the whole saga so far and Deadhouse gates is emotionally tough to digest as well :)

but keeep going, Deadhouse gates totally got me and I am now reading Memories of Ice :)
