César Lasso (cesarlasso) | 15 comments I got librarian status one day ago so I'm still inexperienced as such.

I've just combined editions but I'm not very convinced with the result:

http://www.goodreads.com/work/edition...

What I saw is a group of five editions under the title "Oeuvres poétiques" (four were French and one, German), an Arabic title meaning "The poetic works" and another Arabic title with exactly the same meaning but showing in transliterated Latin-script.

I believe the combine is correct, but why is it showing now under the German title? I believe it should show in French, since it is the original language and it lists more editions.

Hope you don't mind my asking questions till I get a bit more experienced and can solve all that by myself :)

Most ratings should properly be "most shelvings". The Arabic edition has been shelved by three users; the French by 2.

César Lasso (cesarlasso) | 15 comments Thanks. So I guess it's showing the German title first because it's got the most shelvings?

How can I check the shelvings of a particular edition?

Correct. That's how most popular or default edition is determined.

Go to the edition's book/show page. See the "rating details" just to the right of the average review? Click on it, and you'll see stats for the work overall and for the specific edition. "Added by x people" on the bottom line is the number of times the specific edition has been shelved.

César Lasso (cesarlasso) | 15 comments Great. I followed your indications and learnt how to see number of shelvings.

The Arabic has the most shelvings but it would be more shocking to see a European work in Arabic by default. At least, there are more Arabs familiar with Latin-script than Westerners able to read Arabic.

So that default system tends to make sense, only that the result this time was a bit unusual: the German edition was showing behind a French title but after the new combine, it ended up giving title to the new set.

The original work is French, there are more French readers (2 for one edition and another 1 for another) against 2 German shelvings...

Anyway, I am beginning to get the hang of it so I can call it a day :)
