It was about a girl that was adopted off the streets by a detective and she grows up to be a detective, too. The main thing I remember is that she loved old dime store westerns about some hero along the lines of "_____ the kid". I think she was also rich.

There is a series about a woman named Kate Martinelli. She was adopted off the streets by a detective, and yes, she is also a detective. She has a hard edge to her, and is willing to cross the line.

There is also Mallory's Oracle where the heroine has the same thing happen.

Oh, yes! That was the series I was actually thinking of! A Grave Talent is not as hard-edged. I really think it's the Mallory series!

I'm sure it is-she used to 'borrow' the books from a secondhand store, and get the local prostitutes to read them to her.
