I see several people are going to try House of Leaves. I also know that a lot of you read ebooks. For House of Leaves however I recommend you try to get a hardcopy. Part of the reason I nominated the book and the fun of reading this book is the way it is printed. I don't know if an ebook version will do it justice. I don't say it won't but I have my doubts that it will.

message 10: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Smith I'll go so far as to say that an ebook won't do it justice - House of Leaves should ONLY be read in hardcopy. The way the text is printed is part of the story/experience and an eBook just won't cut it.

Barbara | 4434 comments Mod
That is what I thought but I don't have much experience with ebooks and didn't want to put it that harshly. Thanks for backing me up. I don't want to force people to read a certain format but with this book hardcopy will enhance your reading experience.

message 12: by Lauren (last edited Apr 20, 2012 06:45AM) (new)

Lauren Smith No problem :) Reading that is a unique experience and I wouldn't want anyone to ruin it for themselves. I think that maybe - just maybe - you could use an eReader if there were bigger ones on the market to match the page size of House of Leaves. None of the screens I've seen are big enough to handle some of the layouts. You can't read it on a computer, because certain parts of the book require you to turn it on its side or upside down. You could read on a large laptop, but that'd be dreadfully awkward.

Also, I think the feel of paper book is important.

Claudia (claudiavstoomanybooks) | 1779 comments I have an ebook version of House of Leaves and I've tried to read it on a laptop a while back, but it wasn't a such great idea. There are some things that just don't work on a screen. I'll have to get my book budget in order before getting a physical copy though. :)

message 14: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Smith Yeah, it is a rather pricey one.

It is worth it though. It is a unique reading experience, I never found another book that is similar to this book.

Claudia (claudiavstoomanybooks) | 1779 comments Emma, I don't think we're allowed picking the alternatives if we haven't read all 5 of the main list books. Just check again with Barbara to make sure.

Thanks Claudia, I was a bit unsure about the rules to be honest. I can always change the post later. Maybe others will be joining the challenge and will have to update anyway. :-) Maybe on the main thread someone can just update the rules so we all know what we are doing. I hate scrolling down and having to figure out what the rules are. Im sure Barbara will let me know what we can do.

Hey Emma, the rules are mentioned in message 1 of the nominations thread. The two reserve bboks are indeed only for people who have read the 5 principal books and don't want to reread a book. They can then choose one of the reserve books. If they have read those too then alas they have to reread a book.

It is Henri's choice to nominate book 3 maybe book 1 and 2 are crap in his opinion. I don't know. Maybe it is a series of stand alone books. Again I don't know. I am sure he has his reasons for nominating book 3 in a series. If you want to read that book only book three will count towards this challenge. I don't know the series and maybe Henri can shed some light on his choice.

Thanks Barbara. There are a few books that I have read, but I can work around it. Will update before the Challenge starts. Thanks for clarifying for me. :-)

I don't mind.

We can change book untill 1 May. That is the day the challenge starts and we start reading the books. After that ddate it won't be fair for the readers and might create confusion if we would change books. So everybody make sure you have nominated the right books because no changing after 1 May!!!!

message 24: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Smith I read Uglies, one of Henri's choices.
