Nick Farrow (veggievampire) Anyone else getting a kind of Discworld feel to it? I am still only 1/5 done with the book

John Wiswell | 86 comments Insofar as it is clearly leaning on other media for its world-building and that it's deliberately subverting those influences, sure. But otherwise, no. Pratchett and Grossman are very different prose stylists and narrative-constructionists. Colour of Magic is also actually funny - I smile and laugh at it - rather than the sort of malaise-soaked nodding Magicians is supposed to induce.

Ian Roberts | 143 comments I agree, I actually thought looking at some of the other threads that I saw a parallel - in that the Colour of Magic is essentially a satire on fantasy tropes played for laughs, whereas the Magicians is a satire played for derision/ridicule with no real humour whatsoever. So the difference between laughing with the genre vs laughing AT the genre.

I'm definitely in the camp of preferring the discworld version of satire.....
