Mish | 3601 comments Are you always on the lookout for a good read but often unsure as to whether a book is worth while reading? Or perhaps caught up in the hype of the book, only to be let down when you’ve read it? Are you curious about an Author but unsure if his /her books are any good or which one to read first?

Put forward your book or question here and let a fellow members help you make that tough decision.

Mish, I have The Secret River down to read for one of my September books in the Aussie Author challenge, Sarah Thornhill is on my TBR list, and I haven't heard of Autumn Laing. I saw the movie of The Hanging Garden a long time ago, but haven't read the book.... SO I am no help to you whatsoever!!! Sorry!

I'm curious about Joy Dettman. She has a new book out, Wind In The Wires, which is receiving some hype, but I haven't read any of her books.

For those of you out there who have read Dettman books, what do you think?

Michael (knowledgelost) Awesome thread idea

That’s okay Brenda, I’ll wait to hear what you think of The Secret River as I’m not in any hurry to read it as yet. I’ve read 2 of her previous books and I haven’t been overly rapt in them so I removed the The Secret River off my TBR list. Now I not sure if I should’ve done that or not – It does sound good :) Thanks

You're welcome:)

Tango | 290 comments I enjoyed The Secret River a few years ago.

message 14: by Lesley (new)

Lesley | 328 comments I loved The Secret River. My sister and niece also loved it. We do love historical writing though. I haven't got to Sarah Thornhill yet. I have also read Lillian's Story and Joan Makes History and wasn't impressed by those. They are very different in writing style to The Secret River IMO. There was a reading of Sarah Thornhill on its GR page when the book was first released. It may be helpful, if it's still there.

Lesley | 328 comments I just checked for that reading but not there anymore.
I think The Hanging Garden was mentioned on 1st Tuesday Bookclub recently.

message 16: by Michael (new)

Michael (knowledgelost) The Hanging Garden was mentioned on First Tuesday Book Club, I just read it for book club and while I wouldn't recommend it, some people seemed to really enjoy it

message 17: by Mish (new)

Mish | 3601 comments Thank you all for the feedback on The Secret River. It seems like everyone really enjoyed the book so I’ve reinstated it on my TBR list.

@Lesley That's why I was debating whether to read another book of hers. I read The Lieutenant and The Idea of Perfection and I wasn't overly impressed with those either

message 18: by Mish (new)

Mish | 3601 comments Okay..Thanks guys Re Hanging Garden. I missed it on the telly so I’ll see if I can watch it online :)

Can we have some opinions from people who have read That Deadman Dance by Kim Scott please? I started it in June and couldn't get very far in...I'm wondering if it's worth continuing at a later date. I don't want to give up on it, as it's a classic.....

message 20: by Mish (new)

Mish | 3601 comments Brenda, the writing is very creative and poetic and I found it a struggle to fully understand it - are you having the same problem?!

If you are, it doesn't get any easier if you do decide to continue.

I finished and gave it four stars as I loved the poetic prose. However, I felt there was a lack of emotional impact and a lack of connection with the characters, which made it a little heavy going.

How long did it take you to read Nicki? Did you ever think of giving up on it?

I read it over three days and, no, didn't think about giving up. It takes something really bad to make me stop a book and not finish - I think I can count on one hand the number of times I've done that, it's that rare an occurence.
