What We're Watching

I just started with Amazon Prime so don't know my way around it much yet. :-)

I'm finally starting to watch Breaking Bad (Netflix). What's funny is that Albuquerque is my home town; I live here, but I never watched it. In part because we never (this is true) subscribed to cable! And in part I because I had the impression it was very (David) Lynchian, and I really have to be in a mood for DL. But it kept coming up — my daughters have been watching it, and a visiting dance instructor used it for a cute promo (Breaking Bad Tango Habits!), and then some of you are watching it... so I "broke down." I think living here does make it funnier, in a twisted sort of way of course...

Really?! I thought it was tremendous. I loved it.

I've been watching Midsomer Murders, catching up on a few seasons. Wow! Some of those are really almost grotesquely violent, given the genre.
But somehow they're still relaxing. :-D

Wow. I had exactly the opposite reaction. Was it predictable? Yes, but sometimes predictable is a very satisfying thing.
But this is a classic example of why every story is not for every reader/viewer.

*deskplant* I meant the "current one". I'm so out of touch with the rest of the world at times...

:-D :-D Hey, I do understand. I hated the second movie and had to be dragged to the third. Which is perhaps one reason why I was so pleasantly surprised.

If riding the stereotypes is what it takes to bring 500 000 people to see a movie against homophobia in countries still deeply homophobic, then so be it!

What is the deal with Grimm?
I mean, it's almost really entertaining, but they just seem slightly...off.
Or am I being too critical again?

It does not seem to have caught it's stride yet this season

@Grimm the whole memory thing, I'm not feeling it. I almost started to like it, until then. Oh well, back to reading, while they watch. {grin}
I'm on the Left coast so Baseball is in my near future. LOTS of reading. 8)

There will be a Christmas special, I'm sure

Yes, the next Doctor Who Episode is the Christmas Special.

((Do you notice I don't feel that much like working? ;-))

Having said that, it is quite different, since Elementary doesn't take any of the Sherlock Holmes's cases and applied it to modern setting. Instead it felt like another eccentric crime procedural series (ala The Mentalist or Perception). Not sure if this going to be awesome, but I will probably watch the next few episodes.
Is there anyone else watching "Elementary"?

Speaking of which, I'm especially interested in the portrayal of the gay characters on the show Scandal. The president's chief of staff is an openly gay man with a partner. The partner keeps bugging him to adopt a baby. And on the last episode they were actually shown in bed together, deciding to "fool around" (their words). I don't remember anything like that being shown on network TV in a drama before.

I saw the original British version on Logo a few years back and never thought the American would be as good ... but it's better.

I enjoyed the first episode despite my resistance to yet ANOTHER Holmesian spinoff.
What night is it on? We haven't found it since the premier.

I don't think I ever saw more than an episode or two of the British version. I thought both were well done, but not enough murder and mystery for me. ;-)

I don't know its scheduled times, but CBS is providing it free on streaming video if you want to watch it at your leisure.

Jeez. I'm such a throwback. I continually forget that these options are now available!

Warning, though -- some sites only provide one or two weeks' worth of episodes -- so if you want to watch online, it pays to keep up with em!

I tried the first episode after you mentioned it here. Could watch about 10 minutes. All was well as long as Joan walked the street, but the minute she met Holmes I had to stop and skip and skip again and shortly after that decided that it just wasn't for me. Not my kind of Holmes. :(

Thursday, CBS, 10pm. But this week it is not on because of Vice-Presidential Debate.

I don't really think of it as Holmes. In fact, the Holmes shtick is one of the weakest elements, IMO.

After I saw the second episode, I decided that the only similarity it has with Holmes was the name. Other than that, I am not thinking of it as Holmes too when I watch it.

My feeling is, let's wait and see. In edisode 2 the violin was introduced. :)

It didn't fit with any expactations I might have had (there were little), so you're probably right not calling it Holmes.

So this is a bit random, but one of the proffered clips when I checked out the YouTube link for Mad's Gay Straight Guys led me to a series of clips from a French police academy TV series called "Les Bleus" which I think started in 2006, but I'd never heard of it before now. Two of the characters are a very hot on-off again couple. I've watched a bit of it and I keep getting totally distracted. Some of the fans subtitled the clips (dealing with the Kevin-Yann storyline) in English. I'm going to look for the complete series when I have more time to be distracted...

I bought the first season for a very reasonable price and found it oddly charming, although unsure of what it wants to be — a little bit Harry Potter referenced, and a lot confined by traditional TV episode conventions with everything spelled out and some cringe-worthy dialogue. It seems to have been pitched to pre-teens/young teens. BUT, a quite charming young cast, and (to my mind), a rather obvious Merlin-Arthur slash subtext. Fanfic may exist; actually, no may about it.

We have a SOA thread if you want to chat! :) I just caught up on all the seasons and now I'm HOOKED!
