Yes! Thank heavens for Netflix and Amazon Prime. Where you can catch up on the entire 2nd season of Downton Abbey in a matter of hours. :-D

Plainbrownwrapper | 201 comments Hell on Wheels just started its new season (on AMC). I've liked the lead actor since back when he was a young'un on an old lawyer show...and he grew up in Dickson, a little town just a bit west of here (in TN), so his southern accent is quite genuine (even though exaggerated on the show). I hate having to listen to fake southern accents on TV!

I just started with Amazon Prime so don't know my way around it much yet. :-)

I'm finally starting to watch Breaking Bad (Netflix). What's funny is that Albuquerque is my home town; I live here, but I never watched it. In part because we never (this is true) subscribed to cable! And in part I because I had the impression it was very (David) Lynchian, and I really have to be in a mood for DL. But it kept coming up — my daughters have been watching it, and a visiting dance instructor used it for a cute promo (Breaking Bad Tango Habits!), and then some of you are watching it... so I "broke down." I think living here does make it funnier, in a twisted sort of way of course...

K.Z. Snow (kzsnow) | 1606 comments Just watched the 2003 movie Identity . Wow! One of the best psychological thrillers I've ever seen, and has a great cast, too. Kept me guessing up until the very (and unexpected) end. A smart brain-teaser of a film.

I've been watching Midsomer Murders, catching up on a few seasons. Wow! Some of those are really almost grotesquely violent, given the genre.

But somehow they're still relaxing. :-D

message 412: by Aleksandr (new)

Aleksandr Voinov (vashtan) I had that response to the second one - Nolan lost me in the ship scene in the middle, and the dark combat scenes where I had no clue what was going on meant I was checking Twitter until I could escape the theatre. Not running out to watch the next one. I much prefer his other movies.

Wow. I had exactly the opposite reaction. Was it predictable? Yes, but sometimes predictable is a very satisfying thing.

But this is a classic example of why every story is not for every reader/viewer.

What is the deal with Grimm?

I mean, it's almost really entertaining, but they just seem slightly...off.

Or am I being too critical again?

Ami (amie_07) | 76 comments I finally gave in and watched "Elementary" pilot last night. I had been reluctant because I felt like I was cheating on BBC's Sherlock.

Having said that, it is quite different, since Elementary doesn't take any of the Sherlock Holmes's cases and applied it to modern setting. Instead it felt like another eccentric crime procedural series (ala The Mentalist or Perception). Not sure if this going to be awesome, but I will probably watch the next few episodes.

Is there anyone else watching "Elementary"?

message 427: by Susan (new)

Susan | 807 comments Hi Ami. Saw the first 2 episodes and enjoyed them both. Johnny Lee Miller is excellent in this new take on the Sherlock Holmes role. Hope this series can continue at the level it is now.

message 428: by Plainbrownwrapper (new)

Plainbrownwrapper | 201 comments I just now watched the elementary premiere online. I'm fond of Jonny Lee Miller from his previous series, so I was especially interested. It was okay, worth watching a few more episodes in any case.

Speaking of which, I'm especially interested in the portrayal of the gay characters on the show Scandal. The president's chief of staff is an openly gay man with a partner. The partner keeps bugging him to adopt a baby. And on the last episode they were actually shown in bed together, deciding to "fool around" (their words). I don't remember anything like that being shown on network TV in a drama before.

K.Z. Snow (kzsnow) | 1606 comments I know I'm waaaay behind the times on this, but, thanks to my new DVD player, I've become absolutely obsessed with the U.S. "Queer as Folk" series. I've watched the first and second seasons straight through, immediately ordered the third and fourth, and will soon be ordering the fifth. I swear I'll go through withdrawal when I'm finished. :(

I saw the original British version on Logo a few years back and never thought the American would be as good ... but it's better.

I don't think I ever saw more than an episode or two of the British version. I thought both were well done, but not enough murder and mystery for me. ;-)

I don't know its scheduled times, but CBS is providing it free on streaming video if you want to watch it at your leisure.

Aleksandr Voinov (vashtan) I've watched "Warrior" and "Salt" over the weekend, which were decent enough. Though when my dude said "I don't know, I never trust Liev Schreiber", he kinda gave the final twist away.

Warning, though -- some sites only provide one or two weeks' worth of episodes -- so if you want to watch online, it pays to keep up with em!

I tried the first episode after you mentioned it here. Could watch about 10 minutes. All was well as long as Joan walked the street, but the minute she met Holmes I had to stop and skip and skip again and shortly after that decided that it just wasn't for me. Not my kind of Holmes. :(

I don't really think of it as Holmes. In fact, the Holmes shtick is one of the weakest elements, IMO.

After I saw the second episode, I decided that the only similarity it has with Holmes was the name. Other than that, I am not thinking of it as Holmes too when I watch it.

It didn't fit with any expactations I might have had (there were little), so you're probably right not calling it Holmes.

So this is a bit random, but one of the proffered clips when I checked out the YouTube link for Mad's Gay Straight Guys led me to a series of clips from a French police academy TV series called "Les Bleus" which I think started in 2006, but I'd never heard of it before now. Two of the characters are a very hot on-off again couple. I've watched a bit of it and I keep getting totally distracted. Some of the fans subtitled the clips (dealing with the Kevin-Yann storyline) in English. I'm going to look for the complete series when I have more time to be distracted...

message 446: by Plainbrownwrapper (new)

Plainbrownwrapper | 201 comments Thanks for that link. The Kevin actor isn't my type, but the guy playing Yann is quite appealing!

I bought the first season for a very reasonable price and found it oddly charming, although unsure of what it wants to be — a little bit Harry Potter referenced, and a lot confined by traditional TV episode conventions with everything spelled out and some cringe-worthy dialogue. It seems to have been pitched to pre-teens/young teens. BUT, a quite charming young cast, and (to my mind), a rather obvious Merlin-Arthur slash subtext. Fanfic may exist; actually, no may about it.
